It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas On The Ship . . .
Published: December 21st 2009Oceans and Seas » PacificA few weeks back, right around when American Thanksgiving passed and Christmas commercials started playing non-stop, Clair (my co-director) and I started talking about little things we could do to decorate our club for the holidays. We picked up a couple of small things like wrapping paper and bows in San Diego and we borrowed lots of craft supplies from the children’s playroom. Soon after that, we learned that the office was issuing a challenge to the camp programs on the different ships for the best holiday décor. And then we went nuts . . . The true challenge was to MAKE all of the decorations. No problem! We made paper chains, cut snowflakes and did cut-outs of every holiday shape we could think of: candy canes, santa, frosty, gingerbread man, bells, trees . . . ... read more
Greetings Friends! Heading into Nelson Lakes Nat Park for an 11 day backcountry hike in a bit so I won't be able to update y'all till after that. Stay tuned! WWG... read more
Greetings Friends! So you've all heard the hype about me flying to NZ and sitting next to the lead singer of the Wailers, Junior Marvin. Well, I rearranged my vaca plans so I could attend their concert in Auckland the Saturday after I arrived in Auckland. So after some sightseeing in the city and a trip out to Raglan we returned for the Wailers live at the Power Station! The Power Station is very similar to a certain choice club that is also a time of day (night) located at 9th and V St in Wasington DC. The Power Station, like the 9:30 Club has the stage at one end with a horseshoe shaped standing room and a second tiered level with a railing that wraps around the entire second floor, overlooking the stage and concert ... read more
Greetings Friends! Ok, back to NZ and off to Raglan we go. So with Julia as the designated driver and I, the navigator we hopped in Paul's car and headed down the road to one of the country's best known surf beaches. "Courdory sets" it has been described as. Once we got to the interstate our printed directions were a bit dodgy ... and we got lost. We pulled off at a place called the "Greenstone Store" where I went in to ask directions. The owner of the store greeted me and showed me a map of where I wanted to go as I wrote down directions. Then looking around the store I noticed an incredible amount of greenstone (jade) that they cut and polish right there from the locally gathered stones. The jewelry and artwork ... read more
As a follow-up to my last log entry.. On November 19, I performed a speech in Kingston about my Water Adventure to raise funds for a local charity called Able Sail Kingston (which provides sailing opportunities and instruction to disabled sailors). About 75 people attended and the event raised over $2000 which blew away our expectations! The event was called: "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Oceans: A 46,000 Kilometre Sailing Voyage Around the Planet" The 40-minute speech was recorded but the result was dark and audio lackluster, so I have re-recorded it in the Busco Gusto Studio and placed it online and you may watch it at your leisure. Check out my YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/buscogusto I hope you enjoy it! More videos will be going online over the coming weeks... real action flicks which will wet your ... read more

December 2, 2009 ABC Jeep Tours Wednesday morning at eight we stood outside the Beach Club and waited for our ride to the ABC Jeep Tours office in Oranjestad. As folks waited for their daily tour bus out front of the Surf a giant custom monster truck off road vehicle came to pick us up to get us to the start of our tour. We quickly notice there aren’t any Jeeps at ABC only Land Rovers. Two bench seats in the back sit four on a side facing each other. Twenty-two people were divided in to three groups for each of the Land Roves for our day tour of the island. We were assigned to ride with Curtis our tour leader. To our surprise he then asked a person from each of the other two vehicles ... read more
Sorry I haven't written my blog for ages, that'll be because there isn't really anything exciting to write about now that the travelling has stopped and the working has begun! I'm working full time at the Spa and it's a tough job, they keep making me do treatments I'm not really trained in and no matter what I do it never seems to be good enough for my boss but the money is good. Lisa, Laura and I are sharing a room in a house share in Glebe, we live above a pub which is ace. It's a 30 minute walk to central station so it's close enough to the city but quiet enough to be able to get some peace. We got a tiny table top christmas tree and advent calendars for christmas, but hearing ... read more
Greetings Friends! Before we head down the road to Raglan I wanted to wrap up my Auckland, Part I series. So after my mad-capped marathon through the musuem, we had just enough time before meeting Paul and Inga for dinner, to head over to the Sky Tower. The Sky Tower is a big tourist destination in downtown Auckland. It is the highest building in the country standing at 328 meters, thats nearly 1100 feet. It has casinos and restuarants in the first few floors, hotel rooms in the middle and a restaurant near the top and the opportunity to bungee jump from approximately 2/3 of the way up. Unfortunately we didn't have the time to do it, not to mention it is a "controlled" jump that is attached to a runner that drops you slower than ... read more
Aruba - Marriott Surf Club
Published: December 19th 2009Oceans and Seas » Caribbean » Gulf of VenezuelaAruba, Marriott Surf Club November 29, 2009 Karen and I were invited by Kim and Jim to share their timeshare in Aruba the week after Thanksgiving. This was the perfect way of escaping the beginning of winter in New England. We stayed at Marriott Surf Club on Palm Beach in the High Rise District of the island. The island of Aruba is justly known for its great weather, fine beaches, and exquisite restaurants. Aruba is an interesting place to visit, it’s a desert island the size of Nantucket. The weather was always great at 87 and breezy every day. This is supposed to be the rainy season and three times during the week it clouded up rained for 5 minutes and then dried up about 5 minutes later. The population of Aruba is about 100,000 people. ... read more
Greetings Friends! So about the spotty reports from NZed but posting the blog is a distant second to actual expereinces that I am having. But here is some more info for y'all out there in cyberspace. After getting my bearings at Pauls just outside Auckland Julia and I were ready to do some sightseeing. But first things first World Wide Gomes (WWG) needed a little bit off the top and sides. Yes, a good ol haircut, Kiwi style! We were very lucky to be able to borrow Paul's car, and since they drive on the OTHER side of the road and Julia was here 10 years ago for student teaching and driving then, she was the designated driver! So off we went. Driving just a couple of miles to a neighborhood shopping center ( think of ... read more
