The last big night with the remaining groovy grape crew, gutted to see them go. As I’d decided to stay in Sydney for who knows how long I was very excited about getting there and getting myself settled. Out of sheer luck my friend from home Laura arrived in Sydney a few days before me and without knowing it we booked into hostels straight across the road from each other, spooky!
Since Laura and her boyfriend Michael were planning on staying in Sydney for a few months we decided to try and find a flat together. Easier said than done though, so we were resigned to staying in hostels for at least a couple of weeks. We were staying in the notorious Kings Cross, a pretty shady area of Sydney but the one with most of the hostels, so once again I had lived up to my tradition of landing in a hostel right next to the red light district! It made for interesting viewing I can tell you, especially since the American navy ships had docked for a week - obviously thinking the sailors would live up to their reputations, all the brothels hung US flags outside to make them feel at home, very considerate!
The first week in Sydney just seemed to

An iconic view of my home for the next few months be taken up by saying goodbye to everyone I’d travelled with for the last wee while, which was fairly traumatic especially since I was the only one staying - it’s not much fun being left behind! The first to leave were Dicky, Dave and Will, and I had barely got over the hangover from their last night before it was time to do it all over again to say goodbye to Leanne. Brendan and Louise came out that night too and we found ourselves in the middle of Bastille Day celebrations, until then I had no idea there were so many French people in Sydney! I also met up with Micah for a night out, which ended up in a bit of palava as he got taken into hospital suffering from dehydration after being out in the desert all week - they just can't take the pace these Aussies!
I also managed a night out with Josie and Izzy, who I still hold fully responsible for giving me the idea of staying in Oz. I think they’re apologising to the nation in the near future. Ant was a true gentleman and came out with me because he wasn’t happy

With Emma and Leanne on ladies' night. About 10 mins after this pic was taken I was removed from the premises because people just can't take a joke in this country! about me wandering through Kings Cross on my own at night (nothing to do with him wanting a night on the tiles) and when he and Josie got together it was absolutely priceless, they were like two puppies running rings round each other. I have never laughed so much, it even outdid the classic “jazz hooks” routine from Fraser Island! I just had to upload a video I took from Ant and Emma's last night to show exactly what I mean (at the top left of blog), you can see why I get lots of laughs with Josie about!
So the first week was more or less spent in and out of pubs but this came to an abrupt end when I got myself booted out of what I was beginning to consider my local after being ever so slightly cheeky to the bar manager - kicked out of a pub in Kings Cross, outstanding! I did ask the huge Maori bouncer for a pic with him since I was pretty impressed that they thought I needed someone of his size to escort me from the premises but he was having none of it. Oh well.
It may

With Micah before it all went horribly wrong for him! surprise you to hear it but I didn’t spend all my time drinking and by the end of my second week Laura, Michael and I had found a flat in Bondi Junction to move into and I got myself a temp job as a Communications Officer with the tax office. Everything in our flat, well it’s more of a cottage really, promptly fell apart as soon as we moved in so we got to know our rather flamboyant Israeli landlord, Rafael, very well over the next week! A mate of Laura and Michael’s from East Kilbride, Salle (real name Alan), arrived shortly after and moved in with us as well, completing our Scottish household.
My job is amazingly dull but it’s only for a few weeks and at least it’s money coming in. And I’m kept amused each day with stories from Mishu about his best friend who is a spiritualist and can see angels on peoples’ shoulders - I think I almost have him convinced that I’ve recently begun to have psychic visions myself which he is very excited about!
So that’s about it from me for the time being, short and sweet. I’m not sure when

Me and Ant. I was laughing at the thought of him protecting me from the characters in Kings Cross - we'd have no chance against some of those stilleto boots! there will be another blog on the way as I have no idea when I’ll be doing anything other than working and sleeping but in the meantime there’s always Facebook to keep me going!
Congratulations to Bryan and Karin on the arrival of Emma - mum emailed me photos and she's just gorgeous, hope she likes the koala! Congratulations also to Anna and Jorge, I'm so happy for you both (and your mum Anna!) and hope everything goes well.
Happy Birthday to Jods, Anna and Nicola - I know you're all in August but you know how rubbish I am for remembering exactly when!!
And I know it’s a bit early but Happy Birthday Dad when it comes, love you lots and am very amused at how old you are getting, will start looking into those homes as soon as I get back to the UK! xx
