צ'או.... read more

This entry seemed to get missed out - so inserting it now. Today we had another long journey via Queenstown to Te Anau, deep in the Southern Fiordland. However, before setting off we climbed up the short walk to the Tasman glacier viewpoint. For our efforts we were rewarded with a far ranging view back up the glacier, and lots more floating icebergs. The journey down to Queenstown passed through very scenic hilly country, adorned with beautiful lupin displays again along the way. We finally arrived just outside QT and stopped at the Kewarau Bridge, home of the original bungee jump. Alan had declared his intention to try this while we’re here, so we went to watch the hapless participants perch on the bridge and pluck up courage to jump. The setting is beautiful - a ... read more

Te Anua what a place, marvelous, fantastic, the perfect base to explore either Milford or Doubtful Sound. Well that was what the brochure said!! But the brochure forgot to mention the chirpy, happy go lucky attitude of the lady owner of our campsite…. Total charisma bypass!! The best part of our stay besides leaving was getting overpaid by $10 for our full set of crockery she insisted on giving us when all we required were two cups : P During our stay here we were planning to explore both Milford and Doubtful Sound. From other peoples comments we knew that Milford was the more popular destination whereas Doubtful was billed as the locals favourite, less touristy with bigger more isolated scenery. So with this in mind our plan was to go on an organized tour of ... read more

November 26th - Day one of the KT was mostly uphill. We gained quite a bit of elevation for the distance, though I don't remember specifics. Even so, at the top we were only around 4000 feet above sea level. Most of the day we hiked through beech forest covered in ferns and wildflowers and crazy mosses and lichens. That landscape was beautiful. Toward the end, though, we came out of the trees and into a part that was covered in tussock grass. As we walked we started to feel something hitting our faces. I thought, “that can't be snow” and said as much to Masa, but it surely was. It snowed all that night and by the morning the area around the hut was a late spring wonderland... the closest to a white Thanksgiving I'd ... read more

sorry...I lied..no update that day.....my apologies. After the Routeburn track my achilles was aching quite a bit...(like, I couldnt walk to the bathroom type of aching). So I was stuck in a little town of 4500 people that was like a mix b/w Niagara on the Lake and Banff...pretty sweet...but a few too many lovebirds. I went to a bar the first night just to play some pool and ended up meeting a few actual Sheep farmers...probably the funniest guys that I have ever met...they also made many references to the sheep stereotypes on their own.....after they had about 20 drinks and I had one...it was tough to carry on a conversation with them, let alone a pool game, so I shut her down for the night. (p.s- they have some CRAZY pool rules here. A ... read more

When we got to New Zealand, we spent some time in Christchurch to gear up for our hike in the fjordlands, but mainly our first few days in NZ were spent getting to Te Anau - the place we were starting our hike. The track we planned to walk was the Kepler Track, a four day Great Walk through some of the extremely beautiful Fjordlands, a World Heritage Area (but then, aren't they all?) We laid down some cash in Christchurch for warmer gear, because as we quickly discovered New Zealand is not nearly as warm as we'd thought it might be. Even though it was allegedly late spring early summer, we were at 45 degrees latitude. It was cold. Our first two nights were spent in Christchurch at a really great Backpacker place called the ... read more

Keepler Track - Day One Today I started a three day walk in the South Island. The walk is called the Keepler Track and begins from a town called Te Anau. Each night you stay in large huts with other hikers. The journey, in short, was awesome....as you will see. My 3 day walk begin quite sedately this morning. Walking through the landscaped gardens around the edge of Lake Te Anau. Many other tourists giving me odd looks since I was carrying a back pack that was just a little OTT for a wander round some landscaped gardens. Ha! Anyhow, after about 45 minutes I had left the town well behind me and had arrived at the head of the lake, where you will find some huge "control" gates. It would be 3 days and ... read more

Wednesday 8th November Laura - Today we went for a tour around Milford Sound on the Fiord Lands, and also experienced all four seasons of weather! It was an early start as we had to make the 100Km drive from Te Anau to the sounds. The drive was very scenic, passing through wooded valleys and snow capped mountains. It was a grey and wet morning, but we weren't too bothered about this because apparently the fiords look spectacular even in the rain. As we drove up into the mountains it started to snow quite heavily. We were slightly concerned because we didn't want to get stuck in Milford Sound for the night. Also because we hadn't carried snow chains with us as advised in the tourist leaflet... Anyway, we passed through Homer Tunnel (a very creepy ... read more

Friday 25th August 2006 I left the excitement of Queenstown and headed south towards Milford Sounds. Unfortunately the road was closed due to an avalanche. So instead we headed straight for Te Anau. Te Anua is a tiny little place next to a huge lake and the starting point for many of the countries best multiday walks. I wasn't stopping to do the walks (didn't have the equipment), but the bonus about staying at Te Anau was that we stayed at a place where we all got our own rooms - so time to catch up some sleep. As I wasn't walking, there wasn't much else to do in Te Anua, I went to a bookshop. I bought Bill Bryson - A Short History of Nearly Everything (they now do the Special Illustrated Edition) which is ... read more
