Wednesday 11/2/15 Dunedin to Timaru. Last morning coffee in a small NZ town, will miss them, this one was Palmerston and the cafe was the old railway station. Then some big boulders on the beach and a quite large detour to the elephant rocks. Last lunch in a small BZ town, Timaru for a wander and coffee and then headed for the B&B for our last night. It was a bit further out in the wilds than expected but a nice room and great views. Sadly, had to pack properly and then drove back into Timaru for some tea at Speights Ale House.... read more

Maori legend has it that the iconic rounded boulders found at Moeraki relate to the wreck of an canoe which foundered in a storm at Shag Point, the cargo of which (rounded food baskets and water gourds) was washed up on the shore. To a geologist the Moeraki Boulders are 'septarian' concretions; hard cemented material which forms within the sediment. These formed when cementing minerals (calcite or silica) dissolved in sea water crystallise around a nucleus of shell, bone or plant fragments. This takes place slowly over millions of years. If crystallisation of minerals is equal in all directions around the nucleus the concretions grows in a spherical shape. The cherts and flint nodules of the Chalk are formed in a similar way. When the sediments are eroded by the sea the boulders are exposed and ... read more

Moving further south to the coastal hamlet of Moeraki, made internationally famous in recent years following a visit by Rick Stein to a local fish restaurant called Fleurs' Place. The photo shows the place from the outside and belies the internal structure of massive wooden beams with dining in the rafters or downstairs in the bar area. Fish and seafood are supplied daily by the local fishermen and fruit and vegetables are sourced locally with nothing on the menu coming from more than 30 miles away, even the cheese. Our meal was truly magnificent and better value than we have had anywhere. I had 3 john dory fillets and Sue had sole fillets between which were sandwiched with gravadlax. Fleur was a wonderful host and even offered to run us back to our lodging but we ... read more

Day 3 - Wednesday 16th March We woke the morning in Lake Tekapo and jumped on the road straight away, not wanting to waste any time. We proceeded to head South West towards Twizel which took us past the very large and beautiful Lake Pukaki. We stopped for brekkie here where we noted it must be a regular camper stop, as the car park was full of Camper vans. Brekkie was surprisingly yummy. When then proceeded south to Omarama and turned back towards the east coast towards Oamaru that took us past several other lakes, all the lakes beginning with Lake Tekapo form a series of Dams for power generation. The dams were accessible to tourists so we decided to stop and have a look at Lake Aviemore. (Aviemore Dam) Here Matt gave Renee her first ... read more

We left Mount Cook and the day was looking rather dreary but Lake Punkaki was looking just as turquoise as the day before and it was a lovely drive back around its waters edge. We were headed to Twizel so turned right at the end of the road back from Mount Cook and soon encountered some more beautiful Lakes. Although these didn’t quite have the colour of Lake Tekapo or Punkaki they were crystal clear and mountain backed. So we pulled up beside Lake Aviemore for a cuppa and a cheese sandwich - our staple diet for lunch these days - and went down to the waters edge where we skimmed stones on the glassy surface for a while as the day had turned out in brilliant sunshine!! When we arrived at Twizel we were a ... read more

Finally had to say goodbye to Dunedin today, been a superb few days enjoying the city, and the surrounding countryside, I suspect memories of here will linger on for many years, its been the most vibrant and fun place to spend time, the people were amazing, the food was great, the hills were, well, very steep, and it’s a wonder we’ve escaped with the car still going! So, yes, today we left Dunedin. We’re sort of heading home now, back to the North Island, and there wasn’t really a great deal that we wanted to see on the East coast. One notable exception were the Moeraki Boulders. There are basically large round rocks which, due to a geological quirk, were created millions of years ago and are being basically washed out of the coastline as the ... read more

18th September 2008 We broke camp early with just a cup of hot coffee inside us and a wiz in the wood. Within half an hour we we’re in the one horse town called Twizel. This is where the Black Stilt program resides. Disaster struck us; we’re supposed to book a tour before 9am for a start at 9:30am. We call the Department of Conservation plus a couple of other number given to us and all had the same reply, call back at 10am, TO BLOODY LATE!! We decided to try and find the place ourselves and blag it. We drove around for about an hour and nothing. I was beginning to panic; I didn’t want to miss this opportunity. I finally called in at a Salmon farm and was given directions by the English owner. ... read more
