Day 77 (Monday 06/07/09, NJJ) Drove into town for a walk around Dunedin. The weather has not been good since we arrived in NZ, it's constantly been dull, grey and rainy which sapped our motivation to do anything. Did our usual wandering around shops. From Dunedin we took the scenic route to Invercargill via Kaka Point and Nugget Point. Had sandwiches in the back of the van for lunch (ham, cheese and mustard sandwiches are now the usual lunch option). Had fish and chips for dinner and checked in to Lorneville camp site.... read more

So when we left you last time we had just boarded NZ1 for the 12 hour flight into Auckland. I’m not sure if it was because earlier that day we had endured the worst flight we had ever been on, or whether Air NZ’s long haul service is just really good but that flight was, and still is, the best flight we’ve ever had. The leg room in the 747 was very generous and the seats were the most comfortable airplane seats I’ve experienced which meant it was easy to get comfortable enough for some pretty good sleep (i.e a good 8 hours worth) which made the flight feel like a short trans Tasman hop. The service was great and the staff very friendly and it was a nice welcome home after so long. And the ... read more

Well I have now reached the Southernmost point of New Zealand. My trip has now taken me right up to the top, to the exact center and right to the bottom of the country. Exciting stuff eh? We left Franz Josef bright and early on Sunday morning. I was once again with a whole new busload of people. They all seemed pretty nice and I was with Zara who is always a laugh. The weather had turned pretty shitty, and I was very lucky to have done my Glacier hike on a sunny day as the people who did the the day after got soaked and it turns out they had to cancel it the day after that! We got to Wanaka mid afternoon and I had time to watch the sun set over the lake, ... read more

14th Feb 2009 We sleep in a little late today and take breakfast on the move from a petrol station on the outskirts of Dunedin. We decide to take the scenic route to Invercargill which involves driving along the coastal area known as Catlins. We take abreak and stretch at a town called Clutha, it is situated on a river and there is a river festival going on, a bunch of guys are raft racing down the river. We next enter the Catlins, it is a beautiful corner of south east New Zealand with beautiful sandy beaches. As we drive into Catlins we pass Catlins lake, it is very picturesque. A little further on we stop at another scenic point known as Purakaunui Falls. It is a ten minute walk through a forest filled with tall ... read more

Kia Ora! I am writing from my Uncle Sabin and Aunt Claire's house in Invercargill, New Zealand, a.k.a. "The Big I." Its a quiet farm town on the very bottom of the South Island, and it is also the birthplace of my father. I am actually sitting in the very house my dad grew up in, so the memories have been pouring out after his 20 year exile from the Town He Loved So Well. (great song by Phil Coulter - look it up) Today we journeyed every southwards to Bluff, a rundown shanty town named Bluff that is literally at the ends of the earth. It also happens to be the butt of many jokes. My dad complained all the way down there cause its basically a glorified shithole, but it was an interesting sojourn. ... read more

Jawohl. In einem Metallwarenladen. Also ein Werkzeug Handwerker Geschäft. Der Besitzer dort hat neben den Produkten die ... read more

Hello! We just got off the Milford track yesterday. This is New Zealands most popular and famous walk with over 14,000 people hiking it a year. We spent the night at a holiday park in Te Anau, a tourist town, but on a beautiful lake. Here we indulged in a big dinner before heading out on the trail the 30th. To get to the start of the Milford track we took a hour boat ride. The scenery was incredible, everyone on the boat had their camera's out. From the boat we stepped into a solution to decontaminate our boots and were on our way. The 3 nights we were staying would be spent in huts, complete with gas burning stoves! For us this meant hot food and lighter packs (no tent). For such a popular track ... read more

We wake up in Te Anau and quickly have some breakfast and decide to head of to make the most of the day. We want to spend some exploring the town as we did none of that yesterday. Still feeling bit tired. Anshu wants to do some shopping for presents, I dont feel like spending any money buying presents for family that are in NZ. Anshu insists that they have not been to the South ISland and would love something. I quickly peruse through the shops and like nothing (didnt want to spend any money anyway =)). Leave Anshu to do her shopping while I walk along Lake Te Anau shoreline enjoying the beautiful scenery and taking pictures. Still hungry must have worked up a huge appetite and there is a small pie shop not too ... read more

It's been a while so have lots to tell you about - going to skip boring bits! From Lake Wanaka went to the famous Queenstown and I have to say I really didn't like it. After the small friendly local towns, few shops and emphasis on nature it was dissapointing to go to a place where there was no spirituality, no NZ identity and so big (not by UK standards). Walked around town, had the obligatory chai latter, found my hotel....then it rained...alot so I caught up on my sleep!! ha ha I had a whole afternoon in my hotel room...room service, did my washing and watched some movies! (some would say it's a waste of time....you weren't as knackered as me and suddenly sad at place you're in!). Any hoo next day went on jet ... read more
