Kia Ora Headlanders! I'm currently writing from my Uncle Michael's home in Christchurch, New Zealand (sounds like a fun city, aye?) I didn't get much of a chance to see the city, as we were rushed into the Holiday Inn and then taken on a twenty minute trek to the suburbs to my Uncle Mike's house. My cousin Angus fired up the grill (fitting, a guy named Angus working the grill) and we had a nice barbecue, even with the uncharacteristically awful weather. Its cold and raining. Just a treat for the whole family. The past three days, however, have been some of the best in my young life. We hit Queenstown with a vengeance and it was awesome. Or, as my Kiwi kinsmen would say "It was sweet as!" We took the two hour drive ... read more

Kia Ora! I am writing from my Uncle Sabin and Aunt Claire's house in Invercargill, New Zealand, a.k.a. "The Big I." Its a quiet farm town on the very bottom of the South Island, and it is also the birthplace of my father. I am actually sitting in the very house my dad grew up in, so the memories have been pouring out after his 20 year exile from the Town He Loved So Well. (great song by Phil Coulter - look it up) Today we journeyed every southwards to Bluff, a rundown shanty town named Bluff that is literally at the ends of the earth. It also happens to be the butt of many jokes. My dad complained all the way down there cause its basically a glorified shithole, but it was an interesting sojourn. ... read more

Kia Ora!! At long, long last, after seventeen years filled with despair, heartbreak and longing, I have finally reached the Land of the Long White Cloud, the Land of My Father, the Land of My Father's Father, and most assuredly the Land of My Father's Father's Father. And its awesome. I still don't know how to get my pictures from my phone to the computer, so unfortunately I'll have to rely on brilliant language and wordplay to keep you guys interested for a little while longer. But as I'm writing this in the beautiful house of my cousins in Nelson, New Zealand, I'm looking out across a beautiful beach, into the Pacific Ocean, with large green mountains covered with mist in the distance, with a few choice clouds floating above. That doesn't do it justice, but ... read more

G'day Headers! I am writing to you from 10,0090 miles and 15 time zones away. And I can recall each painful mile all too well. We flew into Sydney at about 8:30 Monday Morning (Around 4:30pm on Sunday in Boston) marking the conclusion to a brutal 14 hour plane ride, which came after four boresome hours in the San Francisco International Airport, which we arrived at after a brisk six hour jaunt from Boston. However, the truly fun part was not the twenty total hours of flying. No, the truly fun part was the twenty total hours of flying, with the flu! Indeed, a mere two hours before arriving at Logan Airport, I was diagnosed as having influenza by the lovely doctors of the Pediatric Associates of Greater Salem! Many, many thanks to Wesley York, who ... read more

At last, the day is here. After seventeen long years of anxiously awaiting a return to the land of my father, I depart for New Zealand. My bags are packed, my hopes are high, my Dramamine is safely stored in an accessible pocket, the Ipod is charged, and the Butterfields are ready to hit the skies. After many years of hardship and missed opportunities, nothing stands in our way. Aeoteoroa awaits. (Aeoteoroa is Maori for "Land of the Long White Cloud," and it is the Maori name for New Zealand). This blog will be updated as much as possible with all pertinent information, and if i can find my camera cable, pictures too! We'll try to keep it light, interesting, and humorous. This blog is here to entertain and inform. An island full of adventures ... read more
