This was the first ever day trip i did. This was also my first ever visit to the South Island. A whole new part of NZ to explore. The plan for today was, fly from Tauranga to Christchurch, fly over to Hokitika, catch a bus to Greymouth, shuttle over the alps to Christchurch, fly home to Tauranga. Why?? Because, I LOVE IT!! I arrived at the small but functional Tauranga airport just before the minimum checkin time of 6.00am (yikes!!!!). I had requested seat 12A, right at the back of our high winged Bombardier Q300, operated by Air New Zealand subsidy Air Nelson. I really didn't have time to use the Koru Lounge, but i was thirsty so ran up for a glass of water. For those not from NZ and unfamiliar with a Koru Lounge, ... read more

So we disembarked the ferry, hopped back onto the bus and enjoyed a amazingly scenic drive to Kaiteriteri, a little village in the middle of nowhere. Here I met a chap from Stratford-upon-Avon. Literally 10 minutes from where I live. And we met on the opposite side of the world in a remote little village. Crazy! By this time it was pretty late in the day so we got showered and went to, you guessed it, the bar. Here they put on a pub quiz for us all which was a laugh. Our team didn't win though, which was probably a good thing as the prize was a $30 bar tab. The following morning we headed to Westport stopping off along the way to see some more natural marvels. We first stopped at the Nelson lakes ... read more

Thursday 3rd May Well it's time to move on again. We have spent 2 days here at Fox Glacier and are still coming down off our "high" yesterday after our walk on the upper reaches of the glacier. Just before we left we took a drive out (only 10mins) to Lake Matheson near Fox township to see the reflections. The travel guides and brochures say that it's the only lake which has the reflections of the two highest mountain peaks, Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, in the one scene. We again were lucky as there was no wind and the lake was like a mirror. Hope the pics reflect (ha ha) the beautiful view. You have to walk from the carpark thru a rain forest for about 25 mins to get there but it's worth it. ... read more

Ivy and Suzy were rousted early to join me on a beach walk for a blue penguin hunt. They have just started nesting but they are very hard to see on the beach. Apparently, they come in at night and head back to sea at dawn. We had a nice walk but didn't have any luck with the penguins. They sure look to be cute little buggers. After the boys rolled out of bed, we hit the road. Our first destination was the Hokitika Gorge. After the spectacular Buller Gorge, I had hoped that this wouldn't be anticlimactic. After about a half an hour drive, we arrived in the parking lot which was under renovation with some loading equipment milling about. We have seen a lot of street & highway work in New Zealand. It is ... read more

Sup Everybody! It's been a stunning pattern to always seem to report things accomplished here as "one of the coolest things of my life", but this last tramp proved the point with gusto. Just yesterday, I was walking down the giant Frans Josef Glacier, easily being one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It was a constant feeling of exhilaration from the combo of doing something a little dangerous, while still not ever feeling like you were going to die. We had some knowledge of what we were doing, and most of the gear people would suggest, but still conquered the Glacier and hiked up it to a remote, seldom used hut (Castle Rock) sitting on a ridge line with amazing views. According to a few calculations we could muster between us, an estimated ... read more

We set of very early from Te Anua to catch the early sailing on the "Sound" which was 120 kilometers away. The only traffic that we seen on the 90 minute journey was one police car going the other way and one poor soul who had a flat battery and waived us down to see if we had any jump leads. No luck sadly. The route is said to be only suitable for confident drivers but was not a problem, some twisting mountainside parts but no worse that we had already encountered. The one notable feature however was the Homer tunnel which is a rough cut tunnel through the mountan that is single track and has a 15 minute interval traffic light. The sailing on the "Sound" was a clear highlight of the trip to date. ... read more

The Night i slept near an old Goldmine Village. On this Campsite i met Pit. He was Gold-Digger and is searching for Gold in this Area. The only Money he earns is the Value of the Gold which he dectects. A crazy Guy. He said one Time in 2014 i have to leave Europe, because a Meteorit is splashing into the Atlantic Ocean and the following Big Wave would flooding Germany. Aha. The unique designs and forms of New Zealand jade Pounamu has special significance for the Maori. The Maori believe that Pounamu absorbs the 'mana' or spiritual power of its wearer. The Maori also believe that a piece of Pounamu will always yearn to return to its source in the rivers and mountains. New Zealand jade carving is unique in its designs and forms. We owe this to the Maori who have refined techniques of working with the stone over a long period of time. We can trace their use of Pounamu back to the twelfth century. Because of its extreme hardness, Pounamu was used by the Maori for weapons and tools. It was also prized by the Maori for jewerly - pendants and earrings and soul protection. Many of the designs are contemporary interpretations of traditional ... read more
