The flight to Wellington was a goodun. I hadn't expected much but as soon as I sat down, next to my pre-booked window seat (gotta have a window seat), I was greeted by a beautiful young girl from Auckland who was sat next to me. Sharon was from Auckland but studied psychology at Wellington University. We got chatting and on the shuttle bus to the city, I got her number and arranged to give her a call to meet up sometime before I flew to Oz. I'd booked myself into Trek Global which was a smaller close knit community hostel in the city I'd visited before as some girls I knew through Mark were staying there. This hostel it turns out was notorious for having problems with their fire alarms. Literally every other day the fire ... read more

The next day we moved on and made our way to Napier. As soon as we arrived there Mark took us up to an amazing spot where he'd been before. We literally drove up a mountain and ended up at Te Mata Peak, a fantastic lookout point where you get annihilated by the wind. The views from here were astonishing though allowing you to see for miles. That night Mark and Inga decided to sleep in the camper van up at the top perilously close to the edge of the cliff face which drops down, well, far, very far. I was seriously worried for them and didn't actually expect them to spend the night there as the wind that night back down at sea level, where we were staying, seemed as strong as it did earlier ... read more

Right, I've left it quite a while now to catch up on this blog (having too much fun) and although I've taken notes to make it easier, my memory isn't great. We arrived back onto the North Island after nearly missing the ferry due to Mark being so bad at getting out of bed, and we headed to Nomads backpackers hostel in Wellington to meet Sanni and Sonny. Immediately we had a problem. We tried for ages to find a car parking space for the camper and eventually found one that was rather tight, squished in between an expensive looking shiny new BMW X5 and another van. Mark hit it, not the van, the BMW. He managed to catch the side of the camper on the front bumper of the Beemer, scuffing the lovely black bodywork. ... read more

So Milford Sound. Wow what a place. And what a drive there too. The bus took us down some lovely windey mountainous roads, through a tunnel burrowed through the mountain and out into the entrance of the fjord. Milford Fjord, incorrectly labeled Milford Sound many years ago. When we got there we got almost the picture perfect view of the fjord as you see on postcards only there was a lot of fencing and ferrys in the way. The tickets we had entitled us to a free buffet style meal on the ferry so we all stuffed as much as possible to make up for the fact that we're budget travelers and rarely eat decent size meals with a good selection of edibilities. So this was a treat. We sailed from the start right out to ... read more

The next day we spent doing pretty much bugger all. The weather was crap and I'm glad of it because after drinking the night before I wasn't in the mood to do a great deal of anything. We did however book ourselves onto a bus for the next morning to take us up to Cardrona for a days snowboarding. We were very lucky with the weather as the rain the previous day down in Queenstown equaled snow up on the mountains and it was a blue bird day all day for snowboarding. I've done 2 boarding holidays before but only ever with 1 or 2 friends so it was awesome to have a group of us up there over 10 strong. Although keeping in a group of that size proved to be impossible due to us ... read more

We departed from Franz Josef and headed to Wanaka stopping off on the way at Lake Matheson for another walk. Imediately after checking into our hostel we played mini golf which it turnes out im shite at, and then we plodded along to an irish bar to watch some more rugby. Sat in the bar all i can think about is the fact that tomorrow im doing the nevis 134m bungy jump followed by the nevis swing. The highest bungy in new zealand & largest swing in the world! Supprised I managed to sleep that night but I did fine somehow. The big day. We're really doing it! I'm actually going to experience the biggest bungy jump in New Zealand, the home of the bungy jump! Holy cow. Before I left home I remember telling people ... read more

So the next morning we all hopped back on the bus, all very hung over, and set off bound for Franz Josef. After arriving in Franz Josef we checked into the lovely Rainforest hotel, got kitted up, hopped into a helicopter and flew up onto the Franz Josef glacier. Wow. We were sat on a beach next to the poo pub yesterday shivering in the cold and now we're stood on a glacier in the baking sun having to strip down because it's so hot. Our guide navigated us around the glacier through crevasses and big holes in the ice created by flowing air and water. This felt like something from another world. I've never experienced anything like this before. Completely mind blowing stuff. After roughly 3 hours on the glacier we hopped onto another helicopter ... read more

So we disembarked the ferry, hopped back onto the bus and enjoyed a amazingly scenic drive to Kaiteriteri, a little village in the middle of nowhere. Here I met a chap from Stratford-upon-Avon. Literally 10 minutes from where I live. And we met on the opposite side of the world in a remote little village. Crazy! By this time it was pretty late in the day so we got showered and went to, you guessed it, the bar. Here they put on a pub quiz for us all which was a laugh. Our team didn't win though, which was probably a good thing as the prize was a $30 bar tab. The following morning we headed to Westport stopping off along the way to see some more natural marvels. We first stopped at the Nelson lakes ... read more

Right, so we arrive at our River Valley lodge. What an amazing place. It feels like a ski chalet in the alps. Beautiful wooden building with an open fire in the middle of the chillout room set right in a valley on the river, as the name suggests. The room options were either standard bunk bed dorm rooms or one big room which sleeps 16 on a row of connected bunks. I think 11 of us opted for the big room. Unfortunately there had been alot of rain so the rafting was cancelled and we were told there was a chance we could go in the morning. So we decided to go for a walk across the river and up a steep hill. There was no bridge across the river so in order to cross we ... read more

The next morning we were back on the bus bound for Rotorua. We stopped off on the way for a quick walk to check out an old gold mining site and then stopped off again at an adventure playground. At this awesome location we had the chance to do some really cool cheap activities. A monorail peddle powered race track, skydive simulator, ride in a jet boat, bungee jump and a massive swing which hoists you up 40m and releases you swinging you past the ground at 130kmph. I had a ride in the jet boat which has 450hp and weighs 500kg. Absolutely nuts. After arriving in Rotorua I immidiately got lost trying to find the supermarket. Everywhere is in blocks so navigating around should theoretically be easy. But it wasn't and I wasn't the only one ... read more
