Today we had a wander around Dunedin, lots of architectural buildings, an impressive ornate train station, and St Paul's cathedral. Then at 12.30pm we caught the Taieri Gorge Railway, one of the world's greatest train trips. Consisting of heritage carriages dating back to the 1920's with sash windows. The four hour journey took us from the Wingatui Junction, through Mt Allan forest across to Pukerangi. Crossing many viaducts, viewing a variety of landscapes ranging from city views, farmland, forests and the spectacular Taleri river gorge. The autumnal colours, beautiful vegetation and steep drops were amazing - highly recommended. Then we made our return journey and picked up our campervan to make our two hour journey to Gore, a town in the middle of nowhere! ... read more

Left Timaru and made our way towards Dunedin, which has New Zealand's only castle called 'Lanarch' built in 1871. On the way we stopped off briefly in Omaru to have a quick look around the blue penguin centre, unfortunately we would have to wait until dusk to view the penguins in action. We also took a small detour to Trotters gorge until we eventually ended up in Dunedin. In the afternoon we decided to take our campervan along the Otago Peninsula. This involved an incredibly windy road, with lots of great coastal views, & an array of birdlife and sealife. It is also possible to visit the Albatross and yellow eyed penguin centre, but sadly both had finished their tours for the day by the time we arrived. Unfortunately the wildlife was not working to ... read more

Well, settled back into old dunners again. Its not so bad as I thought actually. I found an awesome flat, with the most amaaaaazing view, which is only 5 minutes drive from town (plus park-finding time of course ugh! damn the bus for being so expensive I have to take my car!). Considering the places I've been, thats pretty darn close! Kinda funny though, in Dunedin its a bit in the wops, people ask me 'why are you living way out theeeeere?!' PhD is slowly getting momentum. For those of you who understand or care for the semi-specifics of what I'm actually studying, i'm looking at liver regeneration in the mouse after partial hepatectomy (chop out 70% of the liver and sew him up again), and the involvement of complement, the toll-like receptor 4 pathway, ... read more

On our road trip we stopped at a University town called Dunedin. We found a hostel just out of the town centre and booked into it. The guy working there gave us the grand tour of the place. It was an old building nice solid looking place with big spacious rooms, big hallway with a wide old style staircase that doglegs round up to the first floor. He showed us the room he had for us, it was nice and big had two wash basins in it which was unusual but handy we thought because the shower rooms are separate and down the hall as usual. There was a window on the rear wall but it had been bricked up and there were another couple of doors in the room one of which had been ... read more

After a pleasant day driving through the Catlins, we managed to navigate through Dunedin and drive up a rather steep and windy hill up to Larnach Castle. Although it wasn't raining, it was overcast and getting dark, so photo opportunities (i.e. the lovely gardens) were minimal, although there was, of course, the obligatory picture of the castle itself. Pretty though it is, we though castle was perhaps a slightly over-grand term for what is essentially a fancy mansion. However, it was pretty cool, and we took advantage of the chance to have dinner in the grand dining room. The (pretty authentic) Scottish food, including Cullen skink, haggis, venison etc was really delicious, and once we had a few drinks inside us (some more than others - opportunities to buy drinks were few as the waitress ... read more

Queenstown HI Everyone, I hope everyone is doing well back home or wherever you are. Well Fall has arrived in Dunedin, which is a little bizarre seeing as it is May but it is actually gorgeous here in the fall. Well this post will be a bit shorter than my epically long last post. I haven’t done all that much travelling after “spring” break. It has been nice to spend a few weekends around Dunedin. Two weekends ago on Sunday, I went with Butler (my study abroad program) on the Taieri Train, this old fashion train to Middlemarch. It was a really cool train and we lucked out on having absolutely beautiful weather. We were picked up from the train station in Middlemarch and driven to Clyde where we had a barbeque and were fitted for ... read more

Trains, Cars, Waterfalls, Seals and More The Catlins National Park We figured that we would leave the booming town of Invercargill and spend a day or two in the Catlins National park which is on the south east corner of NZ’s south island. This area is known for beautiful seascapes and inland waterfalls. What more can you ask for on a beautiful Saturday afternoon than beautiful beaches and waterfalls? After driving for about an hour on the fabulously twisty and windy roads (why can’t they create straight roads? I ask this question every day. I often wonder if the highway department in NZ is filled with budding artists instead of engineers.) that lead through the area, we came to our first major checkpoint, Waipapa Point. Four kilometers off the paved road lies a windswept beach and ... read more

we kicked off the week on Thursday with a little cinco de mayo action at the Break where they had $3 tequilla shots! so fun! then today was a super Saturday!!! We had a little scrambled eggs brunch and then went into town to get Anne and Sara’s noses pierced. The place that they got it done was called “Funk That” and they guy was the grossest man ever- his name was Loyd and he had the biggest gauges I had ever seen. Neither Anne nor Sara looked too nervous to begin with but then when he stuck the needle through their nose they got tears and it looked like it hurt a whole lot. I was so glad I wasn’t getting anything pierced! After that we walked to the Speights Brewery for a tour. ... read more

Day 7- Wednesday 25th April 6am...woken up by a very loud brass/wind band(bagpipes an' all!) ...not best pleased but respect! Anzac day!(war rememberance) We drove down south along the east southern scenic route. First stop the moeraki boulders. They were quite cool but not amazing, the photos make them seem amazing. Sar says they were 'a nice bit of geology!' The seaweed in NZ is huage!!!!!!! Next stop Shag Point! We appeared to be following the same graffitied campervan! There were literally of seals strewn over the rocks, slepping and having a scratch. The younger pups were playing and annoying the older ones! They were quite cool, but stank of fish!! The weather became alot colder and cloudy! We drove on to Dunedin with the plan of staying overnight and taking a half day trip ... read more
