Cooked! Stuffed! Buggered! Rooted! Challenged, physically and mentally. We cannot remember a time when we were so exhausted. A difficult trail in undertaken during the rising heat of the day. There was no escape. Shade was non-existent unless one hugged the side of the cliff face which we did numerous times in our exhaustion. We coped with the first 20km from Cromwell to the “Coffee Float”, two small river craft selling coffee, icecream, burgers, muffins, cold drinks, etc, quite well. Literally metres from the Coffee Float the trail morphed into one out of a horror movie. The Cairnmuir Ladder began with steep climbing switchbacks with steep drop offs that seemed never ending. (Watch the 2min and 1min 20 sec videos) We walked most of them. It rose 130 vertical metres. There is a total of 580m ... read more

The Grand Tour was always all about revisiting old places we had been to in the past but more importantly about discovering new locations, many of which we expected we might have been so close to previously but never actually got there for some reason now faded in the past. And today was to be one of those occasions with Bannockburn, a small settlement, just outside of Cromwell. We are sticking with Highway 6 still, as we have since leaving Nelson all those days ago, and heading for the Kawarau Gorge. Now if you live in this part of NZ you would have no trouble pronouncing ‘Kawarau ‘even though you say it not quite the way the word looks. I will leave that over to you to check that out on Mr Google to get it ... read more

I spent the morning doing laundry. I stayed to watch my clothes, though I noticed that most people did not bother to do so, and I was able to help a teenaged boy who wasn't sure what settings he should choose on the washer. There was a separate laundry building, shared by the Pinot Lodge backpackers and the Chalets RV park. Laundry was a reasonable $6 a load -- three to wash; three to dry. Unfortunately, once again my wash did not dry in an hour, even though I selected Perm Press rather than Delicate. So I had a long wait, especially since it was hard to read Plum in the sunlight. The benches near the laundry were a bit low, too. In the afternoon, after trying and failing to chat with Jim -- I do ... read more

Internet connectivity is better today. Yesterday afternoon it was quite hopeless. I think the link must be getting saturated by too many people trying to use it at once. I bought another four hours' worth. The link's still not good enough to let me upload to Travelblog, though. Today I went to church at St. Andrew's, which proved to be an attractive 19th-century church. They do not have their own minister; apparently there is a shortage of clergy all over New Zealand. One Sunday a month they make do with a lay service, and this was that Sunday. So we had Morning Prayer. Everyone was very kind indeed. They took my name and then recognized me when they made their announcements. The service was simple and earnest, though modern. I liked the sermon, on Joseph's ... read more

Wireless internet is back up, at least for the moment. I bought four hours' worth at $15 and had a good chat with Jim. I hope it is 4 hours total and not four continuous hours! I went down to Rainbow Takeaways for breakfast, having no other practical option, and bought a nearly-inedible bacon and egg sandwich on New Zealand's equivalent of Wonder Bread, which set me back $5. I choked it down, and decided that a trip to the supermarket should be my top priority. The owner did drive me in, at about 11:30, and came back for me at 2. I spent the time in Cromwell's shopping district. The town was largely drowned by a dam in the 1970's, so everything was comparatively new, and somewhat quickly and cheaply built. It is warm ... read more

Sorry its been awhile since I've posted. I've been working for about a month straight. I've had three days off since Easter Weekend. Today was one and the previous one was 17 days ago. We've been working 10-12 hour days, 7 days a week. Over the last 5 days we've each had one day off. I don't think we will see another day off until we are done here. We will finish in a week from today. Then its off to traveling. I've been well, no injuries or colds. I've been learning a lot about wine making, working in the cellar, and grapes. I'm having an awesome time even though I'm working ungodly hours. Actually many wineries here work longer days and have less days off. So I can't complain. So next Friday is my last ... read more

On slopes above the Lowburn Valley, north of Cromwell, is an unusual and fascinating home. It is filled with art, and the laughter of its owners, Sally and John. It was a wonderful place to stay. As we arrived, the angles and shapes in the house design stood out in stark relief in the hot late summer sun. Sally and John are enthusiastic about their art and they have some very wonderful pieces displayed, not the least of which is the house itself. The many corners and many roofs evoked the feel of a jumbled cluster of buildings. As the hillside on which it was nestled was dry and stoney, images of a Mediterranean village came to mind. The house is in two sections with a path (road) running through it. We were housed in the ... read more

After a 13 hour plane ride I arrived in Queenstown at 9:10am on Saturday March 7th. My flight was uneventful with only minor turbulences over the pacific until the last 10 minutes before we landed in Queenstown. That was like a rollercoaster rolling right, rolling left sudden dips and lifts. Its a really small airport so we were the only plane there. Matt, the winemaker of Akarua, picked me up and gave me a guided tour of the road to Bannockburn. He pointed out which rivers were good for rafting, which rivers still had gold in them (all of them), the original commercial bungie jumping bridge, his favorite wineries, and the names of the various mountains. Much of the road is carved out of the hillside above a river. There are massive steep mountains on both ... read more

Well it has been a while since the last update, but as no one has chased us (all getting bored now??) we thought we would wait till we had lots to tell. Well we left you just after Ian’s parents left us. After saying goodbye in the airport, we headed south to Central Otago on the work trail. We had already confirmed some work in Queenstown, but had trouble finding reasonably priced accommodation, so found another job on arrival in the area, it was working on vineyards mainly in a small town called Cromwell. We also managed to stay on, one of the vineyards, so it was a good money saver. Here we did some bud rubbing - clearing trunks, shoot thinning - picking the best shoots and clearing the rest and we also did some ... read more

CROMWELL Our home for the next 4 days in Cromwell was the Police Holiday Home , as the weather had turned a little bit cooler it was nice to be out of the caravan and staying in a home. It was intended to be a relaxing time but we did manage to get in some local 4WD trips and a trip to Queenstown. The new Cromwell town is situated on Lake Dunstan which is a man made lake as a result of the Clyde Hydro Dam damming the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers. The original Cromwell town was flooded by the dam and the new town was built many meters higher up on the flats. Its a great small modern town with a nice center mall. Nearby the Bannockburn sluicings are evidence of the fact this once ... read more
