Over to the west coast our main aim to Black Water Raft the Waitomo Caves in another thrilling adventure. Not as nerve racking or tiring as the Canyoning but still involving a couple of big drops and climbs. It was Nick's turn to be nervous this time - something to do with getting stuck in a squeeze and the wisdom of caving on big fault lines. We had to abseil into a 30 m hole, look at glow worms, float on inner tubes (very cold) and slide on a zip line in the pitch black. No injuries this time. We also spent a bit of time walking around and looking at tunnels and caves elsewhere.... read more

We get up to get ready to go hiking at Holdsworth Tararua Forest Park. We go into town and have lunch before driving out to the park. As we are driving to the park we encounter three sheep in the middle of the road. They are very skittish so they start running as we approach. They are running down the side of the road and we are nervous that they will dart back out into the road. We really don’t want to hit any sheep in our rent car. We finally pass and get to the carpark at the park. We take a trail called the Holdsworth Lookout Walk that is about a two hour round trip. In the beginning there is a picturesque stream, the Atiwhakatu Stream, then it is a continual, steep climb up ... read more

When in New Zealand if someone asks you how are you. A reply of "Box of Birds" means I'm on top of the world. I thought that was fitting as the start of the journey has been great. Even though I've had a few challenges its just part of the journey. It adds a little more spice as long as my attitude is good and I take it in stride. We had a 1 hour delay in Seattle due to a mechanical. I for one didn't get irritated. I figure I'd rather have them fix the plane then not... Anyway we were an hour late getting into LA. They let the NZ connection passengers off first so we could hopefully make our flight. There were about 7 of us dashing out of one building, down a ... read more

Hi all, We are back on land after a fantastice three day cruise on the bay of islands. We had a grat time sailing (not so much because the wind was lite), fishing, kayaking, exploring islands and eating more food than should be legal. Now we are heading for Waitomo to explore glow worm caves. Yes you heard right, the caves have worms in them that glow in the dark. Last week we were staying at a hostel called the tree house in Kohukohu. They were letting us work an hour a day in exchange for free accomodation, that was a sweet deal. During teh week we went to some fantastic hot springs called Ngawha springs and we hiked for a couple of housrs in the giant Kauri trees. All in all out travels are going ... read more

Before you laugh, we were drunk and it seemed like a good idea. One of the guys that is staying at the hostel, is here from England to play cricket in Wellington and to help increase the popularity of the sport, he thought he would teacher a Canadian, a few Germans and an American how to play. I got to bat first and anyone who has seem me play golf, baseball or anything that involves hand eye coordination can predict that it took about two throws before the bowler( that's the guy who throws the ball!) was able to knock the wickets over (those where the sticks I was supposed to be protecting). I tried throwing my fat ass in front of the tennis ball, but was told that in a real cricket game the ball ... read more

I am now in Rotorua which is a thermal town with lots of hotsprings and geysers spraying boiling hot water into the air and there is steam and the smell of rotten eggs (sulphur)everywhere. I visited the Polynesian spa today and sat and admired the view and the seagulls beside the lake whilst sitting inside the thermal pool. Jessie and I are enjoying driving and went to see glow worms on a bush walk in Waitomo. The worms made the surroundings look like a fairy tale glen due to their amazing blue light. We spent a few days up in the Bay of Islands which had gorgeous clear seas and wonderful scenery. We took a boat trip out around the islands and saw wild dolphins which swam underneath the boat. We are off tomorrow to Lake ... read more

Days 61-63 We had a leisurely morning playing pitch and put (Carly gave up after 7 holes) and got back on the bus early afternoon. We arrived in Wellington in the evening and had a little mooch around. Not the most eventful day! Had a very good lie in and went (window) shopping. It's a really nice city with lots of cool shops and cafes. We went to a church and lit a Candle for Grandad Alf. In the evening we sampled some of the cool bars and had a really good night. Another long lie in followed by an attempt at culture. We went to Te Papa Museum, their national museum but after a while decided we couldn't be bothered so went back to the hostel for more sleep.... read more

We stayed in Thames to give us time to visit the Hot Water beaches we'd read so much about and to do a bit of walking and swimming. We walked to a pleasant swimming hole where daring young Kiwi's jump from a small rock and had a short swim, nice. The next day we drove to the Hot Water beach to dig a hole. We scoped out previously dug holes and even tried digging a small test hole. Just as well we didn't fork out for a spade as it seemed someone else had used all the hot water. Or maybe we arrived too late to enjoy sitting in a hot hole of water waiting for the tide to come in. So we had a paddle and went back to our strange accommodation in Thames to ... read more

We rented the car so we could go on a wine tour in the Martinborough Wine Region. I call my mother for her 85th birthday (January 11th in the States) and head out with our winery map. A storm is blowing in and it is raining hard by the time we get into Martinborough. We decide this is a good day to visit wineries and we will do some hiking in the area tomorrow. Two little shops are shown on the map in downtown Martinborough and we think they will have tastings of most of the wine from the smaller wineries, but that is not the case. Their tastings are very limited and they don’t even have many epicurean items. We do buy a bottle of Claddagh Pinot Noir. It is a winery that burned down ... read more
