We picked up Sarah yesterday from Auckland airport and headed straight down to Waitomo! Sarah was really tired so we all spent the rest of the day relaxing. The weather has been pretty pants...loads and loads of rain! In the afternoon we decided we'd venture out and book up some 'black water rafting'. On the big day we were up bright and early, had are breaky and headed over to the office for 0830. Not long after we arrived the guide(Simon) turned up and was really nice and full of jokes, we knew from then it was gonna be a fun day! It said that we were expecting 2 other people but they were late. Eventually they turned up, "they gotta be German" Sean said but they were actually English and from Brighton and turned out ... read more

By the end of the day we reached Waitomo Caves which is a very small town. We were here as the same suggests to go caving. We booked the caving for the following day then headed out for a drive to some local attractions. All the guide books talk about Piripiri caves which are free to look at. After an hour of very twisty roads we came across the caves and realised they were not worth it. On the way back we stopped at several other spots and saw some much nicer stuff. The weather the following morning must have been the best for weeks and where are we going, underground. Couldn’t have planned it better myself. There was 6 of us in all. We started by abseiling into the cave system then walking up an ... read more

It was a sunny Easter Sunday & we woke up at Casara Mesa backpackers in Te Kuiti. A twenty minute drive & I was at the Waitomo Caves waiting to be picked up by the 100% Real Caving company who would be taking me underground for a day without any touristy gimmicks. I was met by Simon & we waited for the others. Two swedes, Robert & Peter turned up shortly, they were travelling on the dreaded Kiwi Experience bus a they were too young to hire a car & were staying in a Waitomo backpackers. The last two to arrive were also Swedish, Anna & Ellen who were also on the Kiwi bus but staying in Rotorua. They were going to do a half day caving but because of a shortage of guides they were ... read more

Waitomo…also known as the city below ground. Waitomo is known for their crazy underground cave systems, and the fact you can go exploring! We signed up for a 4 hour excursion underground at 930am that turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip for me. To find out about the caves go to http://www.waitomocaves.co.nz/home/ pretty nice web site. But what we did was called the black-labyrinth trip (http://www.blackwaterrafting.co.nz/black-labyrinth.html) it was crazy awesome. There was 5 people in our group (way small usually there are 15-20) so our guide took us some extra adventures. We climbed up these 2 huge waterfalls that where inside the caves. It was kinda scary, there was a lot of water we had to go through, it was crazy strong. But well worth it. We then went on our ... read more

We were on the road again heading down to Waitomo to go and see the caves there. On the way down the weather changed for the worst and, however much we trusted her, we knew that G.I.Jane would not keep us dry if it poured. So on the way through Hamilton, we stopped off at another Warehouse (yes, I might get shares in it!) and brought some Tarp and a big ball of string. Upon leaving the carpark, we spotted a drive through Maccy D's so we decided to grap a bargin 50c ice cream cone. As we couldn't be bothered to get out the car we kranked Tor's iPod up to full blast through the car speakers and drove through McDonalds singing our hearts out to the Baywatch theme! I think the staff thought we ... read more

Check me out in the very beautiful black water rafting gear we wore for caving in Waitomo caves. This was amazing: floating through water filled underground caves in a car inner tube (!); jumping over waterfalls and laying back and watching glow worms on the ceiling of the cavernous caves.... read more
