The drive from Napier to Taranaki would essentially cross the North Island from east to west, so I decided to do it over two days with a stop off at Wanganui. But on the way to Wanganui, I called into a small town called Dannevirke, for lunch with Lina, the guide for my overland trip through Africa. How bizarre to meet someone who guided me through ten different African countries, negotiated border crossings and bribed police officials whenever necessary, in a small farming town in the middle of New Zealand! But I'm used to randomness now, so it was all good. Dannevirke is actually in a part of the North Island where many settlers were of Scandinavian descent. They celebrate Norway Day here, and the town hall at Dannevirke proudly sports a cardboard cut-out Viking, posing ... read more

After the stunning Tongariro Crossing, I wanted to go to Mount Taranaki, another volcano. I drove there via a beautiful route through the North Island's countryside and coastline. Although we all know New Zealand by the high number of sheep, there are quite a lot of cows to be found here, too! After a few hours of driving, I arrived in New Plymouth, the biggest city of the region. From there, Mount Taranaki became visible. Still slightly covered in clouds, I could not make up its true shape yet. But I was driving along the south-west coast of the North Island, which runs around the mountain, so I was going to see it from pretty much every angle. As it got later in the day, I got to see more and more of the mountain, and ... read more

Having consumed a good breakfast, and said goodbye to my hosts, I worked out that I had 7 hours for my trip to the nearby Mount Taranaki, before it was time to drive up to Hamilton. Aiming for the Egmont visitor centre, and checking inside for tips, maps and weather information, left me just 6 hours on the mountain. The first part of the track up Mount Taranaki is a fairly gentle gradient, and is wide enough to drive a 4WD up. Trees and bushes offer some shelter, and it’s hard to stop taking photos of the peak as you get closer. After about an hour, the gradient gets significantly steeper, and this section has been named “the puffer” for reasons that become obvious after 10 minutes or so. The trees and bushes have gone now, ... read more

Arrived in Auckland around 9pm not knowing if the Surfing Samurai would have given up on me due to the fact that I was supposed to arrive 6 hours earlier. As I push open the door exiting customs into the free world, I immediately hear “Tim!” and look up to see Tomo nearly fall on the ground with the happiness of relief. We slap hands and laugh as I explain the events that led to my late arrival. Then we load my bags in the tiny silver 2-door Toyota hatchback, strap my board on the roof with Tomo’s, and off we go into the cool New Zealand night. I’m navigating with the road map as Tomo drives us southwest to New Zealand’s most famous surfing town, Raglan. A couple of hours later we pull into the ... read more

Today we drove around on the Surf Highway (Hwy 45). We had a map that suggested points to drive out to and take a look at. We went to the coast to see the Cape Egmont Lighthouse (which unfortunately was fenced off and you couldn't get a close look or walk in it), drove down Stent Road, which is a popular (and famous) surfing spot. We got out and walked around, but no one was surfing. There is a big rock with Stent Road painted on it because apparently they street sign kept getting stolen for a souvenir. Then we went to the wreck of the S.S. Gairloch (a ship that has been a local landmark for over 100 years). It was out a bit in the water, but it was pretty crazy that the remains ... read more

Hey! Well we haven't been out and about too much lately. No new places to report at the moment but a couple of pictures from my birthday and some pictures from Greg and Jess's farm! We headed out there on a Saturday for a BBQ - the boys were out for the day riding their dirt bikes and when we showed up Jess was in full gear trying to deliver a calf!! The calf was stuck and Jess was trying to get a hold of Greg! Her sister and brother in law were up for the weekend and Jaz (her sister) was trying to help. Anyway, don't stress! The boys showed up in time, Mark helped Greg deliver the calf and he was all fine! They had to push him back in, cause his leg was ... read more

WOMAD 2009 Day 1: We left home in the avo 2 go down 2 New Plymouth 4 WOMAD. We arrived at about 19:19 & caught up with Hans, Jay & co once in. Had a gr8 big Indian Curry with Naan for dinner & then watched the evenin with stars of African, Asia, Europe, Australasia & a few from America. There were some amazing guitar breaks, operatic singin, playing broom strings, dancing with excessive flexibility; like the splitz. 2 summarize; Generally Outstanding! Well fed & universally stunned we went to Fitzroy beach 2 spend a the time left (just morning) in our van. Day 2: I got up early for a chance to explore the waterfront with a 90 min walk along the beach & over a few sand-dunes. Beautiful natural arrangements of flowers on small ... read more
