22/10/06 Sunday Pukeiti Rhododendron Garden to Mt Taranaki Left the garden traveling south around Mt Taranaki. The countryside around the mountain is emerald green undulating farmland (Similar to the country around Pullman, WA in late spring). The snow capped volcanic peaks of Mt Taranaki on a clear day must stand out in start contrast to the countryside. An otherearthly creation of black rock and claw mark like scars accented with snow. The rain persisted but I was more persistent. I hiked out to a waterfall and river gorge and back. I came back to the car soaked through and through. Changed out of my clothes into something dry and much warmer. I decided that hiking anymore was out of the question. Rather than try to fight the rain I run out ahead of it and take ... read more

From Raglan, I made the journey to Taranaki. Driving in New Zealand can be so fun. It's totally not stressful and at times you can go for miles before even seeing another car. Also, there might be 2 major 4-6 line highways on the whole island so 95% of the roads are 2 lane mountainous, country roads. Again, on my way to Taranaki, I got to drive through more magnificently scenic reserves. This time I took the time to pull over and snap off a few pictures. When I was still in Raglan, Mike and Rob had already been to Taranaki and were the ones that convinced me to come here next. Mike said that if I came to Taranaki that I should stay at The Wavehaven which is a backpacker's hostel. The Wavehaven is also ... read more

Instead of jumping back on the Stray bus I took a detour with Jen through the National Park and Forgotten Highway to New Plymouth, on the west coast. She did the driving I choose the music (and slept). The forgotten highway gives you a pretty good feel for what NZ is all about. From the Mountains of the National Park you pass into sheep filled rolling hills onto unsealed roads and tropical vegetation before hitting the coastal town of New Plymouth. Nice town as far as we could see, nothing actually was happening while we where there pubs, restaurants, shops mostly deserted. The wind wand on the beach path was impressive, and so may I say where my pictures of sunset. The reason for stopping was Mount Taranaki, we had mountain climbing fever!! Mt Taranki like ... read more
