Cape Reinga. My objective, to reach the most northern tip of New Zealand. Accomplished December 18th, 2005. My present travelmate and roommated Geshe headed off Saturday morning for a weekend of fun and frolick, and stressful driving. I was very excited by my van had finally be completed to my liking and I bought all the necessary things for the trip (camp chairs, cooler, bug spray, camp table) The drive took about 4 hours to reach Cape Reinga. We stoped at a Kauri Museum and experienced the "Kauri Staircase". If you've seen the previous pictures I've posted on here of Kauri Trees, you will understand why I had to visit it, and why it was so impressive. We then headed straight up to the Cape. The last 20 kms of Highway One (why they call it ... read more

We arrived in New Zealand last night. We picked up a rental car today and went shopping to buy some camping equipment. We have been told that there are a lot of good camp sites and parks in New Zealand - hopefull it's true. We have driven North from Auckland to the Northland for a few hours and found a site for tonight. Weather here is great - warm and sunny but not as hot and humid as Fiji. - Matt... read more

Hello All. We have survived the 27 + hours of travel time from PHL Intl to AKL NZ and have arrived safe and sound. It is 3:04pm on Thanksgiving day here. Kind of wierd being 9:04pm Wednesday back home... Anyway, we're way up the East coast of Northland and stopped at a little road side stand with Internet access. So far today we've seen the biggest tree we ever seen, gotten sick on the windy curvey roads, and unfortunately missed out on the sand-dune sledding, but no worries. The country-side is beautiful ... very LOTR (The Shire). We're about to check out the beach before heading to our B&B for tonight. Scuba diving tomorrow! Hope it warms up a bit. That's all for now. We'll check in again soon. Take care. -- wesley and lisa... read more

i've moved on from the beach. well, we have. i met a few people at the hostel in ahipara and we decided to move on to a small 'farm hostel' in the middle of nowhere because the host makes homemade pizza. we surfed twice yesterday. i'm determined to master the short board. on my way here (though not really on my way) i drove to see where the tasman sea and the pacific meet. it was neat to be in the spot, but the view was only special because of the two bodies of water meeting there. i arrive to the hostel early so i could get out for a hike before the others arrived. today i needed to be alone. i hiked to these amazing rock pools by way of spoken directions and a hand ... read more

yesterday i dropped michelle off at the auckland airport. a family emergency required that she return home for a little while. so, i am on my own for a bit. after i dropped her off at the airport i continued north until the sun started to set. i spent the night in a very small town. not a credit card machine or atm in sight. it was a nice place to be though. i ran this morning on a beach all alone before i started to drive again. i drove today all day. it's funny how quiet the car is. the radio works almost nowhere and eventually i just gave up and listened to chippy's little engine. it wasn't bad. the scenery is amazing in this country. i drove through a neverending tapastry of green and ... read more

Next door to Paihia is Waitangi, this is the birth place of New Zealand. We went to Waitangi treaty grounds, this is where the treaty was signed between England (Busby 1840) and the Maori chiefs for protection of the island by queen Elizabeth and peace on the island. But this is also after the europeans invaded the island and caused all the upheaval in the first place. We watched a short history video, walked around the gardens and to the treaty house where it was signed. We went in the meeting house, which is like a community hall for the maori people. Inside you have to take your shoes off. It's made of wood with lots of carvings and decoration. In the afternoon, as the sun had shown itself, we relaxed on Piahia beach. 29.10.05 After ... read more

23.10.05 Today we started our road trip! We set off with the Bay of Islands in our sights and anything else we came to along the way. Our first stop was Mount Eden in Auckland, it's the biggest volcano in the Auckland region, it was the best free view you can get in the city. At the top you could see the crater, which was cool. Next was Goat Island, called this because the only thing that can survive on there are goats as there is no fresh water. We saw lots of big multi coloured fish in the clear sea by the rocks. These were cool the area is a conservation area for wildlife and sealife,we spent a couple of hours here then continued with our trip. Next stop on the way was Pakiri beach that ... read more

It rains during the night but has stopped by the time we get up. We take our time with breakfast and getting the camp broken down. We pack up and decide to walk around to the beach area and enjoy that for about an hour until our bus arrives to take us back. The man from Auckland stops us along the way worrying whether the bus will come down to get us since it rained last night. We don’t think there is a problem with the road, but thank him for his concern. As we are enjoying the beach views, the man from Auckland comes by to be sure we don’t need a ride to the bus. These Kiwis are the nicest people. We have a picnic and the bus arrives to take us home. Part ... read more

The bus will pick us up at 7:15 am, so we are up early. We store our two bags at the hotel and get on the bus with our backpacks. On the way to Cape Reinga we stop at the ancient Puketi Kauri wood forest. The trees are almost as big as our giant redwoods. They have been logged almost to extinction so the forests are now protected. We proceed to Cape Reinga and walk up to the point, with a picturesque lighthouse. From this point, you can look down to where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean come together. It isn’t like a straight line, more like waves going many different directions. A pretty humbling natural phenomenon. The bus driver talks us into being dropped off at Tapotupotu Bay to camp and take hikes ... read more
