Background: The French annexed various Polynesian island groups during the 19th century. In September 1995, France stirred up widespread protests by resuming nuclear testing on the Mururoa atoll after a three-year moratorium. The tests were suspended in January 1996.

We awoke early as we do and went for another bread and jam breakfast, we had the company of an old French guy and a Polish professor who was interesting to talk too. At 8.30 Walter drove us to the wharf so we could catch our ferry to Moorea, the tickets cost about $14 each, the ferry was large, modern and very similar to those in the Greek Isles. The crossing took only about 30 minutes but that was more than long enough to cause Ruth some queasiness, on debarkation we decided to catch the local bus to our pension which [View Full Entry]

We got up bright and early at 6am to get ready for our flight back to Rarotonga. Beni came and collected us at 6.45am and I was surprised to see that the streets were just as busy at this time of the morning as they were at peak rush hour in the evening. Beni told us that school starts at 7.30am in Tahiti so the roads are busy from 6am. We weren’t too sad to say goodbye to Papeete, although next time we visit (and we will be back one day) it would be nice to stay on the mainland for [View Full Entry]

I was up early which is pretty much always the case when its time to move on, Veia drove us to the airport at 8.30am where we were able to grab a toasted sandwich for breakfast. Later Ruth went to throw her wrapper in the bin, a moment later she came back raving about big spiders in the bin, I went over to look and it turned out to be a land crab, after seeing that one we began to see others scuttling around the place. We arrived back in Rarotonga about 10am, while I went and got a car from [View Full Entry]

I made a mental note of how beautiful the mountain looked in the bright morning sunshine as we walked down for breakfast. Vlad came over and explained to us that he wouldn’t be able to take us directly to the airport motu in his speedboat as it was still too choppy over that part of the island. He’d tried to find someone else with a bigger boat but couldn’t so instead he explained that we’d have to go back directly across to the mainland, then travel around the island by taxi to get to the airport shuttle boat. We spent the [View Full Entry]

Final shot of the most beautiful location in the world

We spent most of the morning using Skype to call our families, then spent some time lying on our sun loungers on the beach. I kept trying to take in the view and make the most of it as we haven’t got long left here. Around lunchtime we headed to the pool to cool off and had some lunch. To walk off some of the food we headed down the jetty to watch the fish, and found a ladder at the bottom. We climbed down expecting it to be deeper water, but it only came up to just above ankle level. [View Full Entry]

And another one

We went down for breakfast again but Matt still couldn’t face any food so just had a coffee I munched my way through a big basket of bread and a plate of tropical fruit. After breakfast we spent a couple of hours in the bar using the internet to do some research on camper vans for New Zealand, then packed ourselves a bag so that we could take the kayaks out. Today we got a bit further as the water was a bit calmer. There were lots of rays in the lagoon but they move really quickly so we couldn't get [View Full Entry]

Today I actually managed to drag Matt down for breakfast as I thought we should see what it was like. He decided to just have a coffee as he couldn’t face any food. Breakfast consisted of a basket of bread, jams, cheese, ham, yoghurts, fruit juice and a plate of fresh tropical fruit. It was really tasty but should have been as it cost over £13! After eating for what felt like at least an hour, I suggested that we take the kayaks out to work off some of the food. This time we decided to use the single canoes rather [View Full Entry]

We started the day with yet another serving of baguette and nutella (it’s starting to get boring now!). Then it was down to the beach to enjoy the view and enjoy the novelty of doing crossword together (they were in the OK magazines I’d grabbed from the rack). They were US mags which made them really difficult as the clues were mostly about US reality tv stars we’d never heard of but that didn’t stop us from giving it a go. Once we’d got too hot we walked into the lagoon but even after wading out quite far it was only [View Full Entry]

We ate one of our baguettes for breakfast (saving us £26 as that‘s how much the breakfast of bread, jam, cheese and coffee costs here for two!) and I headed down to the beach to read some of the magazines I'd grabbed from the rack at the bar. It was strange reading about what was going on in the real world as we’ve felt removed from it for the past few weeks. Around 9.30am we Skpyed Matt’s parents and had a good long chat with them. It’s great having a web cam and being able to see each other while you [View Full Entry]

Our bungalow

We woke up before 7am and looked out hoping to see the cat. He wasn’t there, so we walked to the shop and bought some more tasty pain au chocolates for breakfast and some other bits of food and drink to take over to Eden Beach as we were expecting it to be expensive over there. I was sure we’d see the cat when we ate breakfast outside our bungalow, as he usually appears when he senses food is around, but today he didn’t come. We packed up all of our things and went to check out, sad that we hadn’t [View Full Entry]
