Background: Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government and gave a mandate to the government of Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE.

From tourist to traveller, Bula! And welcome to Fiji. Bula - Hello, Welcome, Cheers and at least another half dozen meanings to the word, Sorry we haven’t updated the blog in a while, we have been in the most remote areas the last two weeks and internet and mobile phone signals were not forthcoming. So let’s start with our adventure and what an adventure it was. We arrived in Fiji via Pacific Airways, slight bit of turbulence but not as worrying as James’s comment just as we were about to land. Now no joke guys he said this and I [View Full Entry]

Second Fijian entry, A lot has happen since I last wrote in this blog. Last week we visited five different schools around the capital of Suva. It was good fun and although not nearly as hard work as the camp still very tiring. We got to see a great range of schools from very small rural areas to large primary schools with much better facilities. On Thursday we went to the airport to catch a plane to the southern most island of Kadavu. This island was amazing. Boat is used as the main transport as there are few roads. The water [View Full Entry]

Thoughts on our first few days in Fiji... Well, let’s first describe the place a little. Waya is a fairly large island, very steep and mountainous in the middle and green apart from the surrounding dusting of coral sand beaches. There are narrow crusts of reef surrounding it, one of which lies just off the beach outside the octopus resort. At low tide the surface of the reef - all the antlers, brains, branches and other exotically organic shapes are above water apart from where a narrow ship channel allows access to the resort. At high tide you can float above [View Full Entry]

Bula - The beautiful Islands of Fiji Glad to be back out of cold New Zealand as fast as I had gotten into it and despite the ridiculously early start in sub zero temperatures, I was on the way to (hopefully) warmer climates, I mean who goes travelling for year and comes back whiter than when they left and man was I in danger of that happening!! The greatest thing I have found with all the smaller airports I have passed through, is that yes, when you step off the plane you can feel the heat hit you, not the air [View Full Entry]

Octopus Resort We arrived at Nadi on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji and according to our instructions given to us by the Octopus Resort we grabbed the shuttle bus to the Raffles Gateway Hotel where we had some breakfast whilst we waited for our pick up from “Dan the Man”. When our pick-up did arrive he was late because he had been waiting for us at the airport! Anyway we squeezed into the last four available seats in the minibus and headed off to the port where we were going to get the boat to Waya Island and the [View Full Entry]

After a week on beaches we were looking forward to a cruise around the Yasawa Islands. The cruise was called the Wanna Taki Cruise and was renown for being a party boat. We were greeted by song, dance and a refreshing cocktails. The boat was impressive; top deck was for sunbathing, diving off, drinking and eating whilst the bottom deck had TV facilities and our beds for the next 2 nights. We met up with some English guys and American girls from previous Islands and decided to take a trip snorkelling around the nearby reef. There was supposed to be giant manta [View Full Entry]

After seven weeks of cold and rain in New Zealand, it was amazing to touch down in Fiji and finally see some sunshine! We spent our first night in a hostel on the mainland, where we got to spend the evening eating and having a few drinks around the pool. Was lovely and relaxing. The next morning we were up early to get our ferry connection out to the malolo islands where we were planning on spending the week. We were picked up by a man in a little minibus, and driven along a stretch of beach to the marina (not [View Full Entry]

Island hopping

Oceania » Fiji » Viti Levu
July has been a busy month! As soon as I got back from Nauru, I met up with some friends visiting from Australia. First stop was Natadola Beach for the day. According to the sign on the Queens Rd, its the 7th most beautiful beach in the world. Stocked up with roti parcels and a pineapple, we had a great day just lying by the beach, swimming in the blue water and catching up on all our gossip. The next day we headed to Nananu-i-ra - an island just off the coast of Viti Levu near Rakiraki. The landscape from Nadi [View Full Entry]
