Anyway, hopefully it does not detract from the beauty and tranquility we found in Vanua Balavu in the Northern Lau area in Fiji. The Lau area was only opened up to visitors about 10 years ago. Today, it is still rather remote and hard to get to, given the normal southeast tradewinds. The island group encompasses a few hundred miles and is mostly serviced by a monthly supply ship, which often can not stop at all of the islands due to extreme sea conditions. There are two airstrips that service the vast area, but again, flights often are cancelled due to the conditions. Ich wollte einfach nochmal in die Flip-Flops schlüpfen und die Wärme der Südsee spüren. Also bin ich als Zwischenstation nach Nadi, auf Viti Levu, der Hauptinsel der Fidschi Inseln (engl. Fiji Islands) geflogen. Dort angekommen hatte ich eine einfache und zweckmäßige, aber sehr schöne Unterkunft mit Pool und Spa-Bereich direkt am Strand. Es war nochmal ideal zum Erholen und auch mal mehrere Tage an einem Ort zu verbringen. So vergingen die ersten Tage vor allem mit dem Aufarbeiten der vergangenen Wochen (Fotos bearbeiten, Blog schreiben etc.) sowie mit der zukünftigen Reiseplanung, da meine Reise nach Südamerika vor der Tür stand. Doch auch hier war ich neugierig, die Fiji Islands noch etwas genauer zu erkunden, da jetzt in Nadi nicht unbedingt das typische Leben auf Fiji zu erfahren war. After a busy and wettish end to our time in New Zealand we were looking forward to some sun on the beaches of Fiji. So when we landed in Nadi to be greeted with overcast conditions, rain hammering the tarmac and news of an imminent cyclone approaching we weren’t particularly hopeful! We visited duty free to get some essential supplies for the week - Fijian rum, vodka and two bottles of wine. Our first night in Fiji was spent in a 32 bed dorm room at a place called Smugglers Cove which wouldn’t have been as bad as it sounds had the group of Indian men staying there weren't using it as a meeting room at all hours of the night. Blog 32 Part 1: Dravuni Island, Fiji, April 21 ,2018 – Weather forecast: intense sun in morning leading to partly cloudy skies with a chance of rain; humidity 90%, temperature 28°C, wind 17kts (5 Beaufort) Our anchorage today was off the Dravuni Island. The island is less than two miles in length and lies in the Kadavu Island group of Fiji. There are only 200 inhabitants on the island who happily welcomed us ashore to go swimming and snorkeling in the surf or walk up one of the volcanic peaks for a stunning 360° view of the crystal-clear sea and surrounding islands dotting the horizon.
