The last couple of weeks we have not travelled as much in mileage on the road but lots of mileage with the senses. Bombarded we get with beauty. Spent a week in Carnarvon to get my neck and shoulder fixed and to see if onion picking is a job we wanted to do. Great farmer, interesting set-up but in the end we gave it a miss 'cause ….well onions are in the ground and even though I am close to the ground the bending in 38 degrees did not seem such a great idea. But staying one week in one place opens up things one doesn't see in a day or two. The locals where all so so friendly. We rode around on our pothilatos (bicycles) and chatted a lot. Nearby is Quobba, just 80 km ... read more

8thDecember 2012 Monkey Mia Resort was beautiful. We got up early in the morning and watched the wild dolphins been fed by the Rangers. It is quite the popular event, with 110 people showing up for the 7:45 am feed and this was supposed to be the off-peak period. We checked out of the resort and headed towards the pier to board the Aristocrat yacht for a cruise to the local pearl farm and to watch the local wildlife of dolphins, turtles and dugongs. What a fantastic, memorable day it was! After a long and exciting day, we headed towards Kalbarri. We camped North of Kalbarri at Galena Bridge Campground and had no problems going to sleep that night!!!... read more

It was rather strange approaching Carnarvon, especially after driving through more dry arid land with few features. Suddenly we came upon the Gasgoyne River and then large areas of fruit and vegetable plantation; hectares of bananas, tomatoes, cucumbers, stone fruits and other trees and vines. We are so used to our tomatoes grown in large commercial glass-houses that it was rather novel to see them growing in the open on wooden stakes. We were excited about the potential of fresh produce from the Farmers Market held on Saturday mornings in the Civic Centre carpark, only to be disappointed as we were a couple of weeks passed the season for these events. Out of town the growth reverted to desert vegetation. We often saw groups of feral goats sheltering in the shade of bushes. We saw no ... read more

Day 53 – Tuesday 21st August – Monkey Mia/ Cape Peron This morning the unthinkable happened – when we woke up there were proper dark grey clouds in the sky it really looked like it would rain. How could this happen? Clouds and rain for our morning at Monkey Mia! We decided that we would drive the 40 minutes to Monkey Mia resort and hope that the wet weather would have blown away by the time it got to the first dolphin interaction scheduled for 7.45am. The clouds persisted but the rain stayed away – hooray! At Monkey Mia resort we paid our $16 entrance fee and happily found that it was happy hour at the coffee shop. Rangers keep the crowds off the beach before the dolphin interaction is supposed to start. Over ... read more

Day 52 – Monday 20th August – Quobba to Denham/ Francois Peron National Park Woke up this morning to find a heavy mist blanketing the area. And to find that my right eye that had been sore and scratchy yesterday was no better. It felt sore and uncomfortable, as though a piece of sand was stuck inside my eyelid. Optrex didn’t help so we decided that a trip to the optometrist in Carnarvon would be the right thing to do to get it checked out. While we were waiting for the tent to dry off, Luke went for a quick fish off the beach to try his luck once more. Still no fish! Packed up and back in Carnarvon we went the medical centre to ask about an optometrist. He was booked out for ... read more

Friday 15th June. A full on day with an early start thanks to Sandy reading the time incorrectly. Looking at her phone this morning there was a slight discrepancy between 6:45 and 5:45. Yes, we were up at 5:45, but at least there was no queue at the toilet block. Back to the tent for breakfast which finished up sitting on the tailgate of the Rangie eating our cereal and having a cuppa. With Debbie still not feeling well it was Steve, Sandy and myself off to Monkey Mia to see the dolphins. The usual 5 dolphins turned up along with a friend for feeding. It turns out that only one family of dolphins can be hand fed and only if the dolphin is a female and over 4 years old. It nice to see them ... read more

We checked out of our room this morning and were not quite sure what to due with ourselves due to the uncertainty of the state of our van. It was out of our hands so we decided to enjoy a walk around Kalbarri and have a coffee just before lunch. We then thought it was about time to check on the progress of the van so zipped around to the service centre and to our surprise and relief it was fully functioning and ready to go. The cost of the repairs was not what I was expecting; it was one of those bills that left you smiling as it was hundreds of dollars cheaper than we expected. Monkey Mia was just over 400 kms away but given it was just after 2:00 we needed to hit ... read more

Jo woke up early to take advantage of a great beach to go for a run, then it was a quick breakfast and back in the bus for a short journey across to Monkey Mia for a chance to feed wild dolphins on the beach. When we arrived there was already a large crowd gathered at the top of the beach in the special area sectioned off for these interactions with the dolphins. The guides then got us standing single file about a meter in from the edge of the beach, then it was just a case of waiting and hoping they would come in to meet us and be fed. Whilst we were tentatively waiting the guides told us all about the area and the dolphins they are allowed to feed. ... read more

Had to get up early to watch the dolphin feeding in Monkey mia, starts at 7am and runs to about 10am... 3 feeding sessions all up. One of the dolphin has just given birth, so visitors were told to keep their distances from the beach... Volunteering options available, you work half a day in the morning to help care for the dolphins, inquries directed towards the Monkey mia visitors center. Again another beautiful beach with clear warm water... could live here... Maybe I will come back to Monkey Mia one day... 10km outside of Monkey Mia, we found a lagoon, clear blue waters, about 3km wide, really shallow though, not even waist deep water, the deepest point is all the way in the center and is about 3m... So a little paddle... Met some Austrian guys ... read more
