26/3 Day 59 Augusta is a small town on the Blackwood river and this is where we head to this morning. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is just out of the town and sits where the Southern Ocean and Indian Ocean meet at the most south westerly point of Australia. The lighthouse was built out of local limestone and opened in 1896, although part of it was made and shipped from Birmingham. We had our picnic sat on the shores of the Blackwood river while dolphins swam past. A scenic drive through the forest took us north to Hamlin Bay. Unfortunately this beautiful beach was closed due to shark sightings. The other day over 70 whales beached themselves here, 11 were rescued and returned to the sea south of Augusta only for a few of them to return ... read more

Day 57 As you can imagine it is very hard work travelling around the world so Aunty Rose and Uncle Tony have booked us a holiday! The four of us are off to Margaret River for a few days. After rush hour we set off on the 3 hour journey south to Margaret River. We stopped at Busselton for lunch and went for a walk on Busselton Jetty to the underwater observatory. Busselton is a popular holiday resort with a famous 2km long jetty, the longest wooden structure the Southern Hemisphere and second in the world (Southend has the longest). The 8 meter down observatory allowed us to view the coral and fish that live in the safe shelter of the jetty. We had a guided tour down to the ocean floor, we saw large sholes ... read more

Taunton Farm, in a gorgeous little town called Cowaramup (still can’t quite pronounce it) was our next stop, 10km north of Margaret River. Animals, jumping pillows and a curly nanny Rita kept the kids entertained. Visits to wineries, breweries, chocolate factories, Yahava coffee tastings and a glass blowing gallery transformed our modest travels into a gourmet delight. Communal meals continued on the grass at the farm, overlooking the paddocks and windmill, but the menu included Margaret River cheeses, wine selected after tastings and home made apple pie, bought at the local Cow Town market. (The locals have given up trying to say Cowaramup) Preparations took place in an open barn that had been converted into a camp kitchen that was able to accommodate Kornhausers and Devines. When with the Devines we join in their celebrations of ... read more

We are now in Margaret River which is unfortunately our last destination before we head back to Perth and on to Hong Kong. It was only a short drive here from Pemberton. We went via Cape Leeuwin which is where the Indian and the Southern Oceans meet. It is also the most south westerly point in Australia. When we got there the first thing that struck us was how busy it was. There were cars parked everywhere and loads of people! This came as a bit of a shock as we were used to always having the place to ourselves. After the obligatory walk to the lighthouse and the photograph taking we headed on to Margaret River. We did stop in Augusta for an absolute must of a photo opportunity! When we got to Margaret River ... read more

Nic has been on at me to write another blog entry for a few days now so thought I better before I got into trouble! Where did Nic last leave you?…Changi airport wasn’t it?….So we arrived to torrential rain that night in Bali; which apparently isn‘t a country but an Island in Indonesia which obviously is a country, am I the only person who didn‘t know that? We were staying in Kuta and after the dump we stayed in in Melaka I was pleasantly surprised. OK, it cost a bit more than 4 squid a night but the rooms were lovely and clean, we had our own lil shower that actually worked and I would’ve preferred to eat my dinner off the toilet seat here than from some of the plates we’d eaten off in other ... read more

Before we left Perth we wanted to head down south a bit to the Margaret River region which is known for its scenery its surfing and its vineyards! We hired a car from Hertz, a wee Toyota corolla thing, and booked a cottage just outside the town of Margaret river. We drove down on Sunday late morning and stopped at a place called Mandurah which has Sunday art and craft markets so we stopped for a look around. They also have a lovely foreshore area with a coffee shop or two and a really good ice cream shop which we had a wee tester of. Margaret River itself was very nice and quaint with lots of little restaurants and quirky shops to have a peek in, we arrived early evening so we just had a chilled ... read more

This entry has been a particular hurdle for me. I haven't updated photos here, or on facebook, though it was 2 months ago now...I've been doing by darndest (not a word i usually use, but whatever) to get this whole blog updated but I suffer from a very common illness, called procrastinationitis. It's ok, I'm receiving treatment, but sometimes I suffer a relapse. I'll get through it, thanks for the caring messages (nagging) and everything. So....Down. South. Here are a few words to get you thinking. Awesome. Joyful. Relaxing. Surprising. Peaceful. Beautiful. Exciting. Natural. Sublime. Refreshing. Soulfood. It's one of my favourite places to visit, and well worth the trip down there. A 2 and a half to 3 hour drive south of Perth, 6 and a half of us got our bags packed and set ... read more

Our morning started with a short trip into Denmark. After a quick walk around the town we drove to the Valley of the Giants - a karri forest containing some very tall trees. They’re different from the NZ kauri trees,- instead of being fat and stocky, these were tall and skinny. The storm the previous night had brought some of the trees down along the walk we had planned to do - the Ancient Empire Walk - which weaved along a boardwalk through the forest. It meant that we could only go a short way into the woods before we had to turn around and go back to the beginning again, so we decided to splash out on the Valley of the Giants Walk which took us up through the tree tops on a suspension bridge. ... read more

Entry by Jules We got an early start from the hostel on Sunday as we had a reasonable drive to complete to get us to Margaret River. Many Perth residents head down to the Margaret River region over the weekend to head to the beach, surf, sample the local wines and generally relax so we’d picked a good day to be travelling in the opposite direction. From Perth down to almost Bunbury, there seemed to be endless building of new communities or eco-villages stretched out alongside the highway. These looked like they could be second homes (hardly new communities). Along the way I caught sight of my first wild Kangaroo. Unfortunately he, along with the other 5 or 6 I saw, were dead at the side of the road. We stopped in a place called Yallingup ... read more
