We didn't stray too far from our hotel today, but that was always the plan for our first full day in Melbourne. If Albert had his way, this would be every day, but I've insisted in coming days we go a little further and do some day tours, which I am looking forward to. Most of today was spent next door at The Strand - the giant shopping centre in the centre of Melbourne. We left around 9:30, but due to the holiday period, most shops weren't open until 10. The big stores like Myer were open, and shops on the street, so we wandered there for a while. On the other side of our hotel is a 24/7 post office, which is the most convenient thing for me ever. I have been a member of ... read more

We left Canberra at approximately 8am for the long journey south to Melbourne. Although it's only about a six and a half hour journey, rest stops and torrential rain hindered what started as a pleasant trip. Of course, we knew we'd have to stop a few times along the way, but we didn't anticipate so much rain that we could barely see the car in front of us. I must say, I am very thankful for not driving on this trip. Albert was the lucky one who had to brave it. If it works, I'll post the video I took as we entered Melbourne. Streets had patches of flooding and I was on look out for giant puddles. In the end, we made it safely to our hotel. We are staying at Somerset on Elizabeth, which ... read more

After working horrendous hours earlier in the year, Steve's boss insisted he take a couple of lieu days owing and ASAP, so we grabbed a cheap fare over the Tasman (first time on Qantas since the 2008 incident) to have a long weekend in Melbourne. As a couple, we haven't been to Melbourne before and as neither of us could remember much of it from our previous individual trips so long ago, it was like visiting for the first time. The Qantas flight was great - actually very impressive with a full meal and movies to watch for the same price as Air New Zealand (wtf?). We grabbed the last airport bus into the CBD and then a taxi to our hotel - The Mercure Melbourne on Therry Street. It was located right across from the ... read more

I haven't posted in a while and missed the whole outback and Adelaide. I figured I'd write about Melbourne now because it's a cool city and I have lots to write about. I'll get back to the outback later because it was such an amazing, unique experience that I want to take my time writing about it to do it justice. I've spent the last 3 days in Melbourne and it's unlike any city I've ever been in before. If I had to describe it in one word it would be quirky. There are a ton of little cafes, ice cream shops, bars, shops and they're all in these intricate alleys. It's very confusing and difficult to find your way around. People here are very artistic almost in a San Francisco kind of way. One of ... read more

Hi everyone, today we visited 'The Immigration Museum' on Flinders Street, it is a beautiful building, which used to be the Old Customs House. We read stories about immigrates coming to Victoria, starting with people leaving their own countries and how they settled in Australia down to the issues they had to deal with such as the different cultures, racist behaviour, language barriers and the difficulties of finding work. Lots of sad stories with people fleeing their homelands due to wars or disaster's and having to leave behind family and friends. It was interesting to read about the stories of the £10 'pom's' and children who were allowed to come in free. Such an interesting museum, we were in there about 2 1/2 hours, just love the museums out here. We had a coffee in there, ... read more

Hello everyone, last evening we met Mr Finlow, Mrs Finlow wasn't well, so the 3 of us ventured into some public houses in the city. It was only going to be a couple of drinks but it never is !! We met at The Mitre, very busy, it is very much like London, after work you all go down to the pub and being a Friday, it's like that end of the week feeling and the weekend begins. The little lane which The Mitre was situated in also reminded me of London, there used to be a proper gentleman's club there and The Mitre pub is now a heritage building, believe to pre date back as far as 1850, but been a tavern since 1867. From there we went to The Irish Times, yes the name ... read more

Hi everyone, yesterday was Dorothy and Mike's last day so myself and Stu caught the tram into the city (cbd), Sue and Brian had to work. We wandered around but it was raining, can't complain, at least they had good weather over the weekend. Just walking around we came across more hidden lanes with cafes and shops which we didn't even know we're there. They have a H & M here, which is not exciting, well it is, if you like the shop !! but the building it is in, is beautiful, it is the old Melbourne Post Office and it is huge. We decided to have lunch in the city and went to Young and Jackson Pub which I have mentioned in my blog on a previous occasion, it is where the painting 'Chloe' is. ... read more

Hi everyone, woke up today to find it's been raining, not nice, we want the sun ! Anyway yesterday, Stu and I caught a tram into the city and picked up another one to take us to an area called Prahran which was very run down but now become hip and trendy, reminds me of London. Has lots of cafes, bars, restaurants, vintage shops and various other interesting shops. We went to the Pahran market where they sold fruit and veg, fish and meat but it reminded me of a 'boutique' market, it was all very neat and tidy, not like Shirley market !! We roamed around and then went outside to the Chapel Street Bazaar which was like Aladdins Cave ! Full of memorabilia which always brings a smile to my lips. Rummaged through bits ... read more

Hola everyone. Your monthly instalment of banter and literary genius is upon you. After 4 amazing months we are leaving beautiful Melbourne behind. We both absolutely love this city and will hopefully come back one day soon. But before we get into our plans for moving on, let's catch up on the march madness. We have been pretty busy trying to tick things off our list in Melbourne. Our flatmates both turned 22 and celebrated with a couple of get togethers. One was very drunken and the other a tad quieter. We frequented the market on numerous occasions with Sam and Kerry becoming expert shoppers. The night market was novo and I's domain with copious amounts of food on offer and of course beer. The weather was a tad sporadic however, on the scorching days we ... read more
