Monday 16th March 2015 MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, is considered to be one of the top attractions of Hobart. It is the largest privately funded museum in Australia and was founded in 2001 by Tasmanian millionaire, David Walsh. This was where we headed this morning. It is set in the Moorilla Winery about 20kms from Hobart on cliffs overlooking the Derwent River. There were very few signs showing where to enter the museum from the carpark and we wandered past the winery with its workers going about their normal business. An unassuming building near the cliff edge was where other people were entering through a curved metal façade. The museum is set with 3 levels underground, is a warren of tunnels connecting display areas. The displays consisted of static, electronic, mechanical, auditory, ... read more

Thursday 12th March 2015 Today was a ‘day of rest’, neither having much energy and wanting to catch up with a few chores. The washing was done and the Blog was up-to-date by the end of the day. We did get out just before lunch, driving to nearby Kingston to check out the Channel Shopping Centre there. We wandered around for an hour and only purchased a few supplies for lunch and dinner. Overall, we thought it wasn't very pedestrian friendly and wondered how the shops stayed in business as there were few customers about. On the way home we dropped into “The Margate Train”, a group of tourist-biased shops set in railway carriages with a steam locomotive at the front. Interesting, but we only drove off with a packet of fresh licorice for their ... read more

Another glorious day! Today we’d organised to catch up for coffee with Ken who lived in Hobart. Judy and Ken used to serve on the ACCE Board together several years ago and have maintained links through FaceBook. Today was a public holiday so traffic was light and we had no problem parking although we did double check with a local to ensure that we didn’t need a parking voucher on a public holiday. Luckily, we left Margate with plenty of time to spare because Judy’s IPad map led us in completely the wrong direction to the Rendezvous Café where we were to meet our friend. A friendly passerby steered us in a better direction. The café was located in a square behind the of 19-century sandstone buildings of Salamanca Place. The café was surprisingly busy so ... read more

Sunday 1st March 2015 John and Marilyn drove us to the airport, which took just over an hour. We arrived at about 1020 for a 1140 flight. We were most appreciative that they did this as it made it so easy for us. Frequent Flyer points had us in Business Class as there were no Economy seats left, this was our little bit of luxury. Nothing really special about the event, just more legroom and a better meal. Wouldn’t pay the price normally for a one hour trip. Ian, our host for the home exchange, met us at the airport and drove us through Hobart along the coast to his house in Margate. This lovely little cottage sits across the road from the North-West Bay. What a lovely view! Kerry, Ian’s wife, was there to greet ... read more

A Day in Hobart We woke up to light rain for the first time and we were thankful it was our day off for exploring the city. Tasmania has a population of just over 500,000 and Hobart has 40% of those at 213,000. This number is swelled by the many tourists who flock here and especially when a cruise ship calls, as today. I first went to the open air market at Salamanca Square each Saturday and scoured the hundreds of stalls selling vast array of goods including s Tasmanian Devil cap to keep my head dry. I was very impressed by the many wooden artefacts on sale, especially the Huon Pine products. This is a pine only found in the Huon river area and is now strictly controlled species with most of the timber ... read more

Hamilton to Hobart After a very interesting stay at the Hamilton Hotel we set off on a cool but sunny morning. The meals at the hotel were very good and I had an excellent nights sleep, even though I kept banging my head on the sloping attic ceiling. We stored our bikes in a large shed at the rear, which had a bottling plant inside for water we were told. It was either filtered rainwater or moonshine. We could not be sure which. The hotel was full of old artefacts and of particular interest were two1945 maps of Tasmania showing the distribution of cattle, rainfall, fruit growing etc etc. We could not wait to climb the big 3 mile hill out of town (not) and were soon speeding down the valley seeing black swans, cormorants, buzzards ... read more

Well, after packing we drove through Hobart and along the Derwent Valley towards New Norfolk with June reminiscing about all the holidays she and Arthur spent in their caravan in this very picturesque region. The area is very reminiscent of England with rolling hills and river valleys. We stopped in the small town of New Norfolk and had a walk and coffee. It was a quiet Sunday lunchtime with only a few people about. This is a long weekend in Australia as tomorrow is Bank holiday for Australia Day. There are huge celebrations planned ...every beach has competitions in every sport possible all starting at 08.00 am, there are sailing regattas, BBQs, parties and fireworks planned. I hope that the weather is better than today! The only ones not celebrating will be the Aborigines! We leave ... read more

We have spent yesterday and today with the family. Yesterday I met Andy in Hobart and we had a bit of retail therapy! The weather seems to have settled since Wednesday and has been bright, warm and sunny so we walked around the shops and had a coffee sitting in the sunshine.. We met up with Brian who had opted to go for a walk instead of shopping and then onto Sandy Bay for lunch and back to June's for a lazy evening. Today, we visited Alex a neighbour of June's and spent lovely hour wandering around his garden. Then into Kingston Beach where we sat on the promenade and watched a lot of very energetic Tasmanians compete in a volleyball competition whilst others sailed, water ski-ied, or rose high above the water in something I ... read more

Today we had a great time sharing June's birthday present! A ride around Hobart on a motorcycle. Andy and Brian had arranged that we were picked up from the waterfront and taken around the historic Battery Point which involved some hairy slopes on the back of a bike! Then through the city up to the Botanic gardens where we all had lunch. It was a great experience and the first time Brian had worn a crash helmet. June is used to motorcycles as Arthur had several and we used to ride in a sidecar! Today's ride was a bit more scary at times but real good fun. Brian and I then went to MONA the new museum of art. It's a lot like Tate Modern so we weren't always sure what we were looking at! But ... read more

Geo: -42.8827, 147.33After we left Milford Sound we had two pretty rough days in the Tasman Sea. Despite the rough seas got a 5th workout in (1:41 and 1,067 cals). Dinner at Sette Mari, our first shared table, with a couple from New Jersey - Vern and Nancy (Financial/Life & Teacher). I posted on Facebook but will include Vern's comment here as well - "Aren't you folks a little young to be on this cruise? We thought you were the talent - either singers or dancers". LOL! Our 3rd day at sea, we did email, laundry and got massages at Canyon Ranch Spa. I caused the Canyon Spa reception desk some stress when I pressed a button in the steam room, which I thought was more heat, but was actually the emergency button!! I guess I ... read more
