The purr of the generator indicated it was morning and time to check out the early sun on the nearby range. Though cool, the night didn’t seem as chilly as some of the previous ones. The facilities at this site though not lacking were interesting. The toilet block was more akin to an outhouse, a wooden structure with plenty of low and high ventilation. In the ladies if you didn’t sit down quickly the spring loaded door would smack you in the head and hurry the process. The guys must have been outspoken about the lack of room to move as Greg reported an extension of one plank width had been added to the cubicles. We generally don’t use the shower block as we have one on board our van, however we do always check them ... read more

24th and 25th Marg and I decided to have a look at both the Elder Ranges, north west of Hawker and Wilpena Pound north east of Hawker over two half day journeys. Wednesday morning, we decided to walk to town and then on up Policeman's Hill to a lookout over Hawker and the surrounding ranges. Well worth the climb to get a sense of the area. Hawker itself is rather like an oasis of green in the brown/red plain of arid farmland. On Wednesday afternoon we drove north to Parachilna at the top of the Elder Range, and as it happens, in line with the north of the Wilpena formation. The day was fine and the cruising easy along great sealed roads. There are a few lookouts and pointers to settlements long since crumbled, and to ... read more

Tuesday 23 Have you ever been so impressed by something you want to tell everyone? Quite by chance that happened to Marg and I today. We had a leisurely drive north from Terowie to Hawker where we wanted to base ourselves for loking around the central Flinders Ranges. One dilemma we faced was how could we see and experience the wonder of Wlipena recognising that our minds are much more willing than our bodies are capable of accomplishing. For those who have never visited Wilpena, it is a large natural amphitheatre shaped mass with rugged and precipitous rock walls. Entry to the interior is through one natural opening or one of a few gorges and dry river beds. To see the expense one either flies over or climbs to the highest peak or shake through in ... read more

A big week. We’ve driven about 1,000km, stopping overnight in Elliston, Cowell and Hawker. We left the caravan in Hawker, had 2 nights in Arkaroola, and are now back in Hawker. We try not to do overnighters as the aim is to see things, but don’t want to waste time either. From Coffin Bay on the SW tip of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, we drove up the west coast to Elliston. Coffin Bay and Elliston are small seaside communities which grow during the summer, but had a sort of closed down feeling to us. Lots of closed up houses and “shacks” as they call baches over here. Out of season? The coast is a mix of long white sandy beaches and spectacular cliffs. They have made a coastal drive on the cliffs, and have ... read more

We spent our last day in Alice Springs around the town centre and, among other things, walked to the top of Anzac Hill to look down on Alice Central and the surrounding landscape. It was a bit rainy and overcast. It had always been our intention to go back to Alice since we first visited in the early ‘Nineties. We enjoyed the stay and feel we know the area very well now. It is amazing though how the recent rains have turned what is widely known as the ‘Red Centre’ into a ‘Green Centre’. The desert was lush with green grass and the creeks were flowing. KULGERA Kulgera was a substituted stopover for Erldunda Roadhouse (turnoff to Ayers Rock, King’s Canyon and the Olgas). The extra 76 klms doesn’t sound much but it made the next ... read more
