Next stop, Farina to check out the ruins. We heard about this place just a few days before we left on our trip. The volunteer restoration programme and the Underground Bakery captured our imagination so we opted for a couple of nights here instead of going on to Maree. The volunteer restoration project runs for 10 weeks from May through to July. Anyone can volunteer, skilled or no specific skills. Teams of volunteers work on the designated project for the year. There are teams involved in cleaning, stone masonry, all aspects of the bakery through to garbage and campground fees collection. Many of the volunteers are grey nomads, some returning almost every season. People come from all over Australia to volunteer. Buildings are being restored just to a height where visitors can wander through and imagine ... read more

Australia is a friendly county that’s definitively worth visiting. By friendly, I mean there are a lot of people who will make you feel at home. On top of that, Aussies love tourists, which is the reason why the visa polices of this country are rather relaxed. I had no problem getting it, so I set my way to visit this beautiful country. Because me and my mates are a rather adventurous group of people, we didn’t want to go on a usual tourist route in Australia. Instead of visiting Sydney, Melbourne and other big cities, we decided on visiting some bit more dangerous places on the continent. Our logic was that we can see large cities like Sydney in the United States as well. However, places like Farina in South Australia are not something you ... read more

After our wander up the hill, we headed back up the road to Hawker, where we topped up the tanks, most of us phoned our better halves and we headed toward Wilpena Pound, which is in the Flinders Ranges NP. Wow! The meteor story was true. Any photos we took cannot do justice the sheer size of the crater that was caused back in the day. If you are ever up this way you should take the time to check this place. Not only is it a beautiful and bushy spot but the story of the people that tried to run cattle, sheep and then grow grain, is amazing. I managed to pick up some good shots of some of the wildlife, including various birds and a slightly friendly emu, but it really is a place ... read more

Thursday 11 July 2013 Arkaroola - Copley - Farina Well, it's gusting! We are camped at Farina, again, the temperature reached a fab 26 degrees today it really was lovely, even the wind had a warmth to it today, it has probably put paid to our camp fire tonight and of course my plans for dinner, but we will see if the wind dies down before sunset. So just to give you an update on the last couple of days. Waking up in Arkaroola, it was time for Dan, Josh, Erica and Lorena to hit the road toward the Flinders Ranges South and time for us to resume our journey North, even though Andy had asked me if I wanted to stay a bit longer. I gave that some thought but decided it would be best ... read more

Witchelina We must have slept for a solid 11 hours! I struggled to open my eyes, I felt really sleepy still and trying to come out of a heavy slumber. It had been a fairly warm night and this morning was not too cold, but of course by the time we got out of bed the sun was up and warming the day. Once I had a chai on the go, Andy cooked our breakfast of Wombat Eggy Bread and Bacon, with a side of HP sauce. What a great way to start the day, although by the time we started our day it was really brunch. The last 2 days had been long and pretty full on, but any hope of a quiet day today was out of the window. When we stopped for coffee ... read more

Leigh Creek to Farina Thanks everyone for your messages, all good with Andy, we went to hospital as a precaution really and all turned out well, even though it could have been construed as a ploy to get a ride in a big RFDS plane (thanks Ted!) Anyway, we stocked up with provisions, diesel and comforted on health matters we headed north towards Maree, I wanted to stop and look at the ruins at Farina, there was also camping there which had been highly recommended to us by a number of people so it was going to be worth a look. First though we were heading into a town called Lyndhurst, if you blink you would miss it, this is most unlike the Lyndhurst in the New Forest near where we used to live in England. ... read more
