Dump Point √ Water √ Bashville here we come! A very busy morning at both the dump point and the water tap; understandably everyone had the same idea, after all there is no opportunity out at Bashville. As with all the queues in Birdsville these two took their time to get through but it was very orderly with yet more great chatter. The Bash site is on private property on the edge of the Simpson Desert – Adria Downs Station is a certified organic cattle property so it is a case of “you take it in, you bring it out”. No grey water or chemicals are allowed to hit the ground and all rubbish is to be disposed of back at the town rubbish tip. The station is 3million hectares in size and has been in ... read more

Over the past couple of days 3000+ caravans/campers have descended on The Common. There are several groups where the owners are all in matching t-shirts or fleeces and many have home made flags flying. There are campfires all around and there has been a lot of chatter about their individual journeys to get here from all over Australia, as much as lockdowns and border restrictions/closures have allowed. The group on Facebook still has a lot of people lamenting the fact that they will not be able to make it to the Bash because of these restrictions, but even they are wishing everyone fun for the next week. Today is the first of 2 early roll-ins to the Bash itself, so throughout The Common vans were rehitched and many moved out. It was reported by the organisers ... read more

Keeping up with our walking it was back into town – this time to the Birdsville Bakery. We had heard about their famous curried camel pie and thought “there’s lunch”. Their cinnamon doughnuts weren’t bad either, just LARGE, so we only needed one. As we shared the doughnut over a morning cup of tea/coffee in the “parkland” outside the Tourist Info centre we got talking to 6yr old Elyse. Her parents were nearby and apparently her mum said to her dad “she’ll be on their table in a minute”. Sure enough she was. She told us, amongst other things, that she was going to the Bash with her mum and dad and then decided she would save us a spot next to them. We’d easily know it was her because they “are in a caravan with ... read more

165km from Bedourie to Birdsville. The road was actually quite good for the best part of the drive – there were a couple stretches of gravel (about 70km in total) including some significant roadwork where they are in the throes of sealing the Birdsville Developmental Road. There was a single lane detour at the side of the works for about 600m. We waited for a 4WD to come through from the south and as he approached us he warned about “2 puddles but they had solid bottoms”. We drove through carefully but it was deep enough t give us a good outback bath. Arriving in Birdsville we headed straight to The Common – it covers a vast area on the southern side of town with a comfortable 2km walk back in. Sunhats on we went in ... read more

Leaving Middleton we continued on towards Boulia where we again wanted to top up our fuel and buy some fresh produce. Part way along the journey we noticed the running lights on the van kept coming on, going off, coming on. Something wasn’t quite right. We were able to pull up in a large carpark that happened to lead to an elevated lookout over the surrounding countryside. We’ll give the trailer lead a jiggle and we trek up to the lookout. So we thought. John gave it a wiggle but discovered a major problem – the lagged tubing of wires must have been dragging over the ground and consequently had worn through the lagging to expose and break some of the wiring. We had no running lights or indicators. A quick fix with some 100 mile/hr ... read more

Our journey today was from Barcaldine to Middleton. We have decided that we will come back to both Winton and Longreach in a few weeks time and in doing so, hope to avoid some of the school holiday/tourist rush and be able to book into the dinosaur exhibition (Winton) and Stockman’s Hall of Fame (Longreach). Middleton is somewhere between Winton (where we refuelled) and Boulia. Just outside of Winton we turned off the highway for our first single lane outback road, sealed for the moment. After the recent rain super cell the edges of the road looked to be heavily rutted in places, but were surprisingly firm – two wheels off for approaching cars and all wheels off for approaching trucks/road trains. Part way along, we stopped in a layby and went for a wander amongst ... read more

Barcaldine closes for the weekend at 2pm on Saturdays. The tourist shops, bakery, souvenirs, art/craft galleries and general run of the mill shops all remain closed on Sundays. The pubs are open (there used to be 11 in the town) and the Laundromat is also open so it was a chance to get bed linen washed and dried. That is after I had to find some detergent – stupidly, I had left a new bottle of liquid at home so I had to settle for a splash of wilderness wash. Washing machine started and we went for a walk through the back streets to kill time when we discovered a small general store open – most likely only known to the locals – so I was able to purchase a bottle of laundry liquid ready for ... read more
