DAY 285 Firstly, thank you to everyone for a huge amount of Anniversary wishes, e-cards, e-mails, Cards etc, and thank you to the Wallaby Wanderers Darryl and Sarah for the Chocolate (Cadburys Flake) it was Yum!! Everyone’s kindness is always much appreciated. We woke this morning in the swag to the bird chorus, It must be a cockatoos conspiracy as they were right above the swag squawking their heads off, so we lay there looking in to the morning sunshine, watching the birds flying around and coming to terms with the day. We wished each other a happy anniversary, and snuggled back down in to our sleeping bag for just another 10 minutes. I eventually climbed out and went to make us both a cup of tea, asking Caroline to stay in the swag until ... read more

DAY 284 An early start this morning is required as we are booked onto a tour into the Lava Tubes, we were both awake at 6.30, Andy got out of bed earlier to put the kettle on and I followed a few minutes later. I grabbed my wash things and headed to the showers straight away so that I was going to be ready in good time. Once breakfast was done, we were on with the hiking boots, water at the ready and off we set to reception to await our tour guide. We are doing the 2 hour Lava Tube tour this morning despite everyone’s objections “No, the 4 hour tour is much better, the 2 hour one is not so good.” Well, we did consider it, however thinking about our budget and how much ... read more

DAY 283 Oh that lovely Kookaburra morning alarm again, it is barely even a glimmer of light outside but they are welcoming in the day with delight. Of course it is too early to even think of getting out of bed and although the nights are not too cold, it is a bit too fresh also. I think Andy was up at around 7.00, with the kettle on and booting up the laptop, I enjoy a bit of a lie in, and a cup of tea was soon with me. I hear Andy shout that my Mum has written a poem, it seems that this poetry malarkey is catching, although it is the message section of the blog, the formatting is not there so I have reformatted and you can read it properly at the ... read more

DAY 282 Warning !! Do not go and taste a Kangaroo without Killing it, then cooking it, as they will get very annoyed and are liable to punch you, then kick you in to next week, and we do no condone the mistreatment of Kangaroo’s in way. We woke up to a beautiful warm morning, the sun was doing its bit, and our day was getting warmer. Sitting around having brecki and looking at Kangaroojack’s web site we were pleased to see that this month we have had nearly 100 hits a day. We spoke to our neighbours who were packing up; they are from Launceston in Tasmania, one of my favourite places. They also had been star gazing last night and had enjoyed the evening, we told them about the software program we use, Stellarium, ... read more

Im Undara-Nationalpa... read more

Time to leave Airlie Beach and head for the Outback. We leave the hostel at 10am and make our way to Mount Surprise (roughly a ten hour drive) As we leave Airlie, we meet Stefan from our cruise and say goodbye to him as we head up north. En route, I make a phone call to a working backpacker hostel in Innisfail, and shock horror, they advise us they have work for us starting this Monday. Good news as we could do with the exrtra cash but we’ll see what happens. As we make our way inland, our first stop is Charters Towers. A small rural town 100km inland, resembling a town from a western movie. After a slow but delicious lunch, we head on to Mount Surprise. We are not sure what to expect in ... read more

Mar 31 An early rise at the Innot hot springs. Before breakfast, we decided to take a morning dip. The water was really warm (38 Degrees). Dad went into the ultra-hot 44 degrees pool. When he came out, he was steaming and was totally red below his shoulders (see picture). There was a river running near the campsite. We went down to check it out. In some places, the water was so hot, we couldn't put our hands into it. There was a dead frog and a dead fish because the water was so hot. The way to Undara Park didn't feel as bumpy or windy. There were many dead animals on the roads heading to the Outback. Undara is a volcano. The unique feature about the volcano is that it made tunnels called Lava Tubes. ... read more

Blog7 I did go swimming under the Millaa Millaa waterfall and very refreshing it was too , the tree kangaroo did return and all who were camping on the site gathered to view it. From here we forged our way inland through Ravenshoe , stopping briefly to look at the Capella steam train and millstream falls , the widest in Australia , alas no swimming, then on to Undara national park , the leaflet looked promising , we would have the Undara Experience . About 190,000 years ago the Undara volcano erupted violently , its molten lava flowing quickly though the low points in the landscape, as the top layer cooled and formed a crust , the fiery magma below drained outwards leaving a series of long , dark , hollow tubes , it was these ... read more

The road to Undara was rather optimistically titled the Kennedy Highway, a grand name for what was essentially a single lane of tarmac with rough dirt on either side. If a car was coming in the opposite direction you were expected to drift your left wheels into the dirt so that there was enough room to pass. If a road train was coming in the opposite direction you were expected to get off the tarmac completely. The larger road trains trailed a cloud of dust and grit behind them like a comet's tail, which resulted in you driving into something akin to a sandstorm. There were very few settlements along the way, so it was a real back-country drive with few signs of humans. At some roadworks where traffic was only allowed in one direction at ... read more
