Sat 9th Feb.... my 50th birthday and it was our last few days of luxury staying with Richard Christine in their beautiful house in Tallai overlooking Surfers Paradise. Annie and I spent the day on the beach and in the evening we were taken out for dinner by Rich, Christine, Robert and Erica to a restaurant on the seafront called Sax which overlooks the marina. http://saksrestaurantandbar.com.au/ It was a great evening with great food, drink and company. Certainly a birthday I will remember for a long, long time. Thank you all!!! The following day we went out on Rich's speedboat. We met up with Axle Lou and two of their friends in his boat and spent a fab day racing around the coast, swimming on a secluded beach and lunch on Couran Point Beach Reserve. http://www.couranpoint.com.au/ ... read more

We left New Zealand early on Sat 2nd Feb and took the 3hr flight to Coolangatta airport which is situated on the Gold Coast, Queensland, The Sunshine State... Strange arriving in Australia and not feeling jet lagged! There had been a cyclone in Queensland a few days earlier and people further up the coast had died so it was a relief to find minmal damage around the Gold Coast although the sea and rivers were brown from the debris after the storm ... so the 'Muddy Coast' would have been a more appropiate name. Rich was waiting to meet us and took us to his and Christine's fantastic house overlooking Surfers Paradise. They had spent some considerable time making the place right after the cyclone but there were still a few trees that had fallen down ... read more

This morning I managed to lay in until 8am….late for here and much needed! Once Rowena was up we headed off to the Gold Coast, about a 50min drive to the beach at Kurrawa. The beach was lovely, white sand but the quite strong waves. We suncreamed up and settled down on the beach for a few hours, reading and snoozing. Around 12 we headed into the surf club for lunch, where I had a very yummy Asian prawn salad. I love the fish salads they do at the surf clubs; they are the best I have come across. After lunch we wondered round the market stalls selling lovely homemade things, then headed back to the beach for a few hours, finishing up braving the waves before heading home. The current was strong and the parents ... read more

Even after an early night, my 5am alarm clock was not welcome, today I feel tired! Alas morning daily routine completed and it’s soon breakfast time. I headed out to the station fairly early this morning and caught the 7.59am train, changing at Coopers Plains for the express train to the Gold Coast. I now have the local public transport system sussed, and to think, only a few days I looked like a rabbit caught in the head lights as I caught the train to the city for the first time. After the hour and a half journey on the train, I hopped on the bus to complete the rest of my journey to Surfers Paradise. It’s a very commercialised area with high rise buildings and lots of very tanned and toned looking people wandering around ... read more

We left Byron bay for Surfer's Paradise- finally a fairly short journey. Surfer's was a complete contrast to Byron; Byron being a small backpacker town, while Surfer's boasts high end clubs and skyscrapers. We had planned to stay in Surfer's for five nights because our friends were living in a flat there; however if it wasn't for seeing them I would definitely have chosen to stay in Byron longer and skip Surfer's, or just stay for a night or two. Having said that it was lovely to see Suze and Ben who had found an amazing apartment; about a minutes walk from the beach with its own indoor and outdoor pools, sauna and jacuzzi. This was definitely paradise for the backpacking bogans. The first night we arrived the three of us were pretty tired so just ... read more

We are entering one of the best weekends in the life of Alexa Hill. All the energy and hype getting into the weekend had been building for an entire month now. Maria couldn’t decide if she wanted to spend the weekend with Morgan (an Australian we finally met) on the beach with his Aussie friends or go to Byron with the Americans, Forest and Henry. Yea we couldn’t make up our minds between which guys to hang out with – real first world problems. Poor us. I’m kidding. Maria and I picked Byron – (Morgan the Aussie fell through). At Byron we were promised driving lessons on the left side of the road and personal surf lessons from the Hawaiian instructor himself – Forest. So we got the biggest cultural experience in Australia…..by Americans. How ironic. ... read more

14TH October 2012, Last day at the Nicoll manor. My baby sister Linda flew up from Adelaide last night to give Mum and Dad a nice surprise. Went to Uncle Ritchie’s and Aunty Bonnie’s house at Currumbin for morning tea. Met my cousin Jeff for the first time in at least 20 years. Had a great time catching up with family. Finished off the night with a great meal presented by Aunty Timah. Special thanks to all for your great hospitality.... read more
