On Monday, after being thwarted by the weather, instead of going to the Carrumbin animal sanctuary, we made a bee line for the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. So far, easily the highlight of Australia for me! They opened at 9 and we were there by 930. They are one of the top rated "zoos" here (so their website claims). I could believe it. They started as a koala sanctuary, but now have other animals. Partly like a regular zoo, but has other live encounters that, unlike the Steve Irwin zoo, are free! It's like the Bush Gardens animal thing from your car, but instead walking around. They have shows throughout the day with different animals -- mostly educational things. We started with the Lorikeet encounter. They are gorgeous birds, very colorful, and look like parrots (but ... read more

Awesome week. As mentioned at the end of my last blog, my friend and ex-colleague Kate flew out to meet me in Brisbane for a week of fun and frolics. We swapped HR for rollercoasters, the union for the spa and payroll for the beach. Know which I prefer. After my return from Fraser Island, I head to the hotel Grand Chancellor. I felt a little out of place with my huge backpack and accompanying sleeping bag. It was pretty obvious I belonged in a hostel, slumming it with the rest of Europe's youth. I found myself at reception standing up straight, putting on my best voice and proving with good manners that I was in the right place. After checking in it was straight to the bar to meet Kate. It was so great to ... read more

Almost exactly half way up the coast of Australia and marking halfway in our campercar journey, it was time to stop in at more relations, more distant ones this time. Just before we left, it was revealed to me that my Granda Jim would be in Brisbane at the same time we would be. So in order to take advantage of this good fortune, and to meet a section of my family I've never met before, we would drop in for a couple of days. Apparently certain people had doubts as to whether or not we would make it on time, it being something of a long shot to time it exactly right, and get to an address in an entirely unknown city, and survive Amelia's driving along the way. Well we made it, so there. ... read more

I was awake quite early, and felt fine and dandy, but it seems the skank had spanked the boys out and they didn't get up for ages. I tided the kitchen and made the most of the sun in the back garden, slapped on the factor 30 and read a book for a while. When the hangovers finally emerged, we drove up to another nice viewing point on Mount Cootha that overlooked Brisbane city. After taking some photos (and crying with laughing at the ones from the night before) we dropped the camper van off with it's co-owner Sarah, who lived in a fab place overlooking the river. It's no wonder everyone has so much fun out on the balconies and porches over here, it's a great place to gather with friends and chill out in ... read more

We had a bit of ground to make up so it was a long drive that took us into rainy Brisbane – when we arrived we were greeted by enormous downpours!! As we passed a sign for ‘Edinburgh Castle Road’ we were feeling a bit too much like we were back in Scotland! Before we had arrived in Brisbane we had been in touch with an Aussie mate we used to work with back home and we were lucky enough to have an invite to our first proper Aussie BBQ! When we arrived at James and Bee’s flat (after getting lost in the city plenty times) the food was already roasting and some beers were waiting – superb! It was great to catch up with James and Bee and they were kind enough to offer to ... read more

In the afternoon, we went up to the top of Mount Coot-tha and looked over the cityscape. It was really sunny and hot! We took lots of photos of the city and the river We then went to Tent World and looked for a hat for Richard, but unfortunately couldn't get one from there. We then had to pick up some sleeping bags and tents from Dave-o. After picking up what we needed we headed down to the Valley Pool and picked Sophie up from her appointment with Faye. We dropped Dad and Richard off in the city and they went shopping for a while whilst Sophie did her swim and I sat on the bench and watched her. We had some dinner and then played some games of Uno Attack! It was really fun. ... read more

What’s Going On Brisbane seems to have a festival going on every week. And the good thing is it’s usually free. Since I’ve been here there has been the broad-ranging cultural Brisbane Festival, the 150th Brisbane City Anniversary, Brisbane Writer’s Festival and this weekend starts the Valley Fiesta. I managed to be around when the most spectacular festival of all climaxed occurred: the RiverFire spectacle, basically a massive fireworks display on the Brisbane River. I reckon a couple of hundred thousand people were camped up and having picnics along the river that night waiting for the massive show to begin. And boy what a fireworks display...probably one of the biggest I’ve ever seen with fireworks off barges in the river, off Story Bridge, even off the skyscrapers in the CBD. The river’s reflection complimenting all of ... read more

GdaY folks and welcome back. I do apologise for the lack of 'blogging' but it has been a manic couple weeks, sorry to make y'all jealous..... So last time we spoke I was still picking apples and livin in the Garra abbatoir. I did that for another couple of weeks while it continued to get colder, even more miserable, longer shifts without any change in pay and cos i was the end of the season the hostel was emptying. anywho, one Saturday night while we were playing cards n downin goon, we were met with the cry 'OMG, You will not believe what is goin on outside.' So 15 girls run to the window to see a gorilla, bunny, kangaroo and the lead singer from Kiss, dancing around the car park. Turns out they were visiting ... read more

The arrival in Sydney was a culture shock after the sparsely populated wide expanse of the west coast. The train came to a halt after what seemed like ages, crawling through suburbia. The city was ‘tall’ and ‘noisy’. Hustles and bustles were mixed with sadness and goodbyes as the new friends we just made travelled on in various directions. After collecting the mountain of luggage…thank goodness for extra Lizzie hands! should take a leaf out of her book and cram our lives into one bag!! AS IF !! Our transfer from train to taxi went well, we had to wait for a large disabled taxi with a wheelchair bay in it, to fit us in!. the crazy singing woman rattled our cages as her friend pretended to be disabled…well…a walking stick suddenly appeared….no sight of one ... read more

I awoke to the glorious sounds of Aussie wildlife chirping happily outside my window this morning and upon looking at my phone sleepily...realised it was nine thirty!!! Two cups of coffee and a warm shower later, I was awake ready for the day ahead. Someone, somewhere is sounding a 1940's esque car horn...though upon looking outside the front window, all I can see is the postman on his 'slow-ped'...surely not hehehe. I am now very worried about Amanda back in the UK, not content a few weeks ago with scolding her finger preparing her hubbies lunch, she has really surpassed herself this time now by burning her stomach....ironing the top she was wearing (That's just wrong hun x!!!) This afternoon, Mike and I took a leisurely drive up to the Mount Coo-Tha Lookout to observe the ... read more
