Monday 6 th May, DarwinBig4 Howard Springs, Darwin NTCost $44.75 per night with membershipRated by us 7/10Mileage 20079 travelled 311kmsWith only a short drive to Darwin, we packed up slowly, we have the pack up plus breakfast down to and hour which is not too bad, would like less to do but we shall see. It is getting tedious having to put out the awning and the kitchen and the fridge all the time, we definitely did not think this through enough for this big trip. The landscape is very similar to home and if I didn't know better we could be around Northam or Toodyay. The trees are low scrub and spiky, I guess all the rain means they have to stay low to survive each year. There is a lot of water ... read more

So today we’ll be heading 450 kms south-west to Uluṟu, the iconic monolith formerly known as Ayers Rock. It’s Mother’s Day, so I went out dutifully last night and bought my beloved a box of chocolates. I then wished her a happy Mother’s Day and espoused her virtues on our extended family chat … well I thought it was Mother’s Day … until someone pointed out that I was a week early. I hope we can still eat the chocolates. We’re up at the crack of dawn for an early getaway … well that was the plan until we notice that one of our tyres appears to be more than a tad on the flat side. Hmmm. But no worries, we’ve got a spare, and a jack, and a wheel brace, so we’ll be on our ... read more

Sunday 5 th May, KatherineBreeze Big4 Caravan Park, Cossack NTCost $50.40 per night with membershipRated by us 8/10Mileage 19768 travelled 0Relaxing day unwinding after the long drive, the camp site is so quiet and some lovely people. Chatting to guy who has an MDC thirteen foot van one of the list we were looking at, not keen you have to make the bed every time you set up and your head is in a box which pulls put, wrote that one off, moving up to 15/16 foot next.Had a short ride around Katherine, the town looks run down and in need of some TLC, lots of people in the parks doing not a lot, feels unsafe so we drove on.We have both been to Katherine before and all the gorges are in National Parks ... read more

Issy’s opted for another day of rest and relaxation on the large deck of our AirBnb, overlooking a small swimming pool, and why not. … well in my case it’s because I struggle with the whole relaxation thing … so I leave her to it and set off to explore the splendours of the West MacDonnell Ranges. First stop is the spectacular Simpsons Gap, where a stream has again managed to erode its way through 100 metres or so depth of the mountain range. It seems this whole area was once part of the sea bed. As the waters receded they found weak points in the rock and progressively eroded them away over the billenia (is that a word?) to form the gaps, chasms and gorges that we can see today. So that explains the sand ... read more

Issy opts for a rest day, so I bravely set off alone along the Ross Highway to explore the wonders of the East MacDonnell Ranges. First stop is Emily Gap where a sandy dry river bed has created a deep sheer sided gap through the range … well it’s not actually dry, there’s a swimming hole here complete with jumping rope. There’s a sign to the effect that taking photos in the bit of the gap beyond the swimming hole is not allowed for cultural reasons … which is probably a bit superfluous … the water completely fills the gap, so you’d a need submersible camera, or ropes and crampons to climb around the water on the rocks … well actually no, it’s just the submersible camera option … you’re not allowed to climb the rocks. ... read more

We’re a bit slow off the mark after our nearly 700 kms of driving yesterday, like nearly lunchtime type slow when we finally make our way out the door. I guess we must have needed the rest. We plan to spend what’s left of the day exploring the town. First cab off the rank is Anzac Hill, where we get excellent panoramic views over the town and back towards the MacDonnell Ranges and Heavitree Gap. No surprise it’s called the Red Centre, the colours of the soil and rocks are an unmistakably distinctive dark reddish orange. Next up is the Olive Pink Botanic Garden. I ask Issy what colour olive pink is, and she rolls her eyes. It seems I should have known better; Ms Olive Pink founded the garden back in 1956. We take a ... read more

Today we’ll be slogging an arduous nearly 700 kms north into the Northern Territory and onto Alice Springs. We stop to get a caffeine fix and stretch our legs at the thriving metropolis of Marla, population 38. It might be small, but the roadhouse supermarket wouldn’t look out of place in a Melbourne suburb. There’s not much you can’t get here - food for both pets and humans, toiletries, clothes, and even tools to fix your caravan. There’s no mobile reception, but they’ve got that covered too - three phone boxes lined up next to each other out the front. I wonder if many of the younger generation would even know what one of these things was. I get chatting to the two young service staff, she’s from Spain and he’s from Ireland. There do seem ... read more

An easy three and half drive down to Wauchope from Renner Springs, fuel up in Tennant Creek and straight through! Wauchope is now Devils Marbles Hotel and its about 9klm south of the actual Devils Marbles. Parked van up in park, unhitched, had some lunch and headed out to Devils Marbles (Karlu, Karlu, who the hell would know what this is) these very impressive granite boulders are scattered around a sprawling valley about 100 klms south of Tennant Creek. We have just ticked over 20,000 klms and $5,000 worth of fuel! The reserve itself is about 1800 hectares in size with hundreds of marbles not just a few. So where we sit here is 760klm south of Katherine and 393klms north of Alice Springs....our country is so huge the distances between places is mind boggling! We ... read more

Sorry to leave Lake Argyle as it was such a relaxing and lovely park. Were going to have 2 days between Lake Argyle and Katherine but realised timing to stock up on grog wasn't going to work, so many rules, times, regulations and days they don't sell grog arggghhh, so had one night on the road at a lovely bush camp at Dingo Creek Lagoon just between Timber Creek and Gregory there ended up being just four vans which was nice! The scenery between Timber Creek and Gregory and surrounds was just lovely! Then into Katherine to stock up with groceries as they have a good Woolworths and BWS and Cellarbrations, fuelled up and got out of there! They have POLICE (what a waste of resources) manning the bottle shops getting your details etc as there ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Mataranka August 6th 2023

Reluctantly, we left Kakadu National Park and headed south to visit Edith (Leliyn) Falls. Leliyn is part of Nitmiluk National Park, which has as its key attraction Katherine Gorge. We had booked a campsite in Leliyn for our caravan, to enable us to enjoy an afternoon swim in one of the largest croc-managed plunge pools in the NT. The waterfall that cascades into the plunge pool is a long swim across the dark, foreboding pool, with reedy banks just like we had seen in Kakadu, potentially hiding fearsome saltwater crocodiles. With some hesitance, I ended up swimming across to the waterfall twice, taking the opportunity of a massage under the falls. After an overnight stay at Leliyn, we drove to Mataranka for a two night stay. We had unfinished business at Mataranka, as the renowned Bitter ... read more
