Where do I begin? Uluru, also known as "Ayer's Rock" is located near the dead centre of Australia in the legendary "Outback". It is also known as the "Red Centre" because of the spectacular red colour of the landscape. Of course, this being one of their rainiest seasons ever...the landscape was blanketed in a velvet green collage of plants, trees and every prickly type of shrubbery you can imagine. As the plane descended, I was able to see Ayer's Rock from a birds-eye view, and this green blanket only made it stand out even more. Even though we are enamoured with the "Rock" because of our "Priscilla" adoration, this monolith of stone is very sacred to the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. Every crevice, indentation, "landscaping" and shape of this massive stone has an explanation tied in ... read more

Day 146-148 29th-31stJanuary This blog is dedicated to my Grandma. She always wanted to go to Uluru and loved looking at these photos and hearing all about it when we returned. We miss you every day. xxx We had an early flight the next day to Uluru and Wade and Melissa had really kindly offered to drive us to Sydney Airport which was really cool of them because we had to leave the house at 6am! We were all fairly quiet on the way there and it was a bit of a sad goodbye to them both at the airport. The world is a big place and who knows when we will meet again? We really got an idea of how freaking big Australia is on our flight to Uluru. Its 1347 miles away and the ... read more

Well we arrived back in Sydney which was quite a shock after the serene and quiet Blue Mountains, but we do like this city of contrasts. I do not know if you had noticed from the last published photos but I forgot to mention that Paul is a little lighter now, he was so fed up with everyone saying that he looked like ‘Bill Oddie’ that as soon as we got to Katoomba he noticed a hairdressers on the main street so he quickly deposited me at a café and went across the road to investigate, as he did not come back for ages I wondered across to find him and he was indeed looking extremely younger and the hairdresser was very pleased with the results!! Well it will not take you long to realise that ... read more

Monday 10th January We've arrived at Alice springs! Once our bags were taken off the train we headed to our shuttle bus that then took us to the Alice Springs Lodge hostel. Its baking hot by the way!! We reckon about 36oC and upwards, its almost unbearable standing for too long exposed to the sunshine. We were warned! When we arrived at our hostel all the dorms are fully booked and we get our reservation upgraed to a twin room for the price of the dorm. Its a blessing in disguise as we have our own fridge and two air con units in the room. The usual unpacking of bags before showering followed and we then set off together into the town of Alice Springs fully covered from head to toe with factor 30 sunblock! Alice ... read more

Sunday 2nd January – Big Red Rock and Dust Left Sydney to explore the red centre: Fond farewells – How lovely to have experienced such wonderful hospitality and met such great characters as Rhubarb and Jackson! Restores your faith in human (and canine) kind… In hot water – Straight into 40C heat for a base walk around Uluru (Ayres Rock), but caught in a huge thunderstorm and watched the splendour of water cascading down the big red rock. Champagne sunset – Surprise champagne/juice and petit fours as we watched sunset over Uluru, which dulled the sense for the later bug-fest… Bugs, bugs, bugs – If you want to share your dinner, shower, ablutions and bed with bugs, this is the place to do it! An abundance of wildlife and distinct absence of bath-robes, fluffy towels or ... read more

Whilst I was trying to catch some sleep in the hospital on Tuesday morning Mark got to enjoy an extra morning of the tour before bussing back up to Alice Springs to join me. Hence I'll let him write the bulk of this post! Alrighty then. What to say, what to say? Uh. Well. I guess I got back to camp at about 23:00. Our intrepid bus driver Ben was waiting up. Very noble. I filled him in on unfolding events and he pushed a plate of food that had been saved infront of me. Two 'Roo steaks, two buffalo sausages, a single slice of tomato and a single potato wedge. Hunger satisfied I went to next door's unoccupied camp to secure a tent. For all I know any of the ones I knocked on in ... read more

So once more we were up & out with a new 3 day tour group & a new driver, Ben. We headed south from Alice Springs & stopped off at a camel ranch where I got to ride a camel, which was much more comfortable than I'd been led to believe! Only a short ride around the field though. We then had a couple of pit stops at Eldunda & Curtin Springs where Mark bought me a flask & patch for my bag & a slice of homemade chocolate cake to be my birthday cake! We stopped off at the camp site to have lunch then headed to the Uluru cultural centre where we learnt lots about the local culture & managed to hide from the midday sun! We then headed off to the Kata Tjutas ... read more

We had a long drive back in the direction we had come from to get to Yulara which is the Ayres Rock resort. We checked into the campsite and drove to the Olgas, an impressive cluster of domed rocks which form valleys and gorges, they are also known as Kata Tjuta. They are about 30km from Uluru with mount Olga being the tallest standing 200 meters above Uluru. We decided to do the Walpa Gorge walk which took us through the centre of the gorge. The walls of the gorge tower so high above you that its impossible not to get a sense of just how small we are on this huge planet. We then had a rush on to get to the Uluru sunset viewing area on time. Allot is written about how all the ... read more

After waking up and picking the last bugs out of my hair I walked into what can only be described as a graveyard for moths and cockroaches... or the camp showers. They weren't like this yesterday so what happened? I have never seen such a collection of dead/pulsating bugs congregated in one place! Bugs really don't normally bother me but this made me want to vomit. It was a very short experience and I was out of there like a shot! I packed up and went to do the 10km base walk around Uluru finding paint on the rock, patterns in the rock, water pools and other hidden treasures. It was early so the temperature was perfect for the walk and it was a clear day so we were able to see the rock in all ... read more
