We're on the move again heading to Batchelor for the night so we could visit Litchfield National Park. To continue our buff tour of the Northern Territory we spotted another Railway Museum. The Adelaide River Railway Heritage precinct displays much of the original equipment from the rail line built in the 1880 to service the Pine Creek Goldfields. Extensive work has been done to restore and document their rail history and it was very impressive. Unfortunately we had to keep moving so couldn't check out all of the buildings. I'd read about a Butterfly House in Batchelor and thought we should check it out. The owner (a VERY strange and eccentric guy) had built the butterfly house and pet gardens from scratch. He's collection of butterflies were very impressive and we really enjoyed feeding the bunnies, ... read more

Geo: -13.0505, 131.031Sunday we took a short 40 km drive to Berry Springs. This is a thermal pool for swimming and was opened on the Saturday after clearing out the crocs. Guess we were the guinea pigs!! After seeing crocs jump I just shut my eyes and took a leap into the water like a flying whale. Nat said "I saw a sign that says no swimming as you may get sick with gastro" Shit too bad my head went under and I was brushing the water out of my eyes. Gastro & Crocs.....yeah who's idea was it to swim here. DAVID!!!! Well we arrived in Batchelor on Monday 29th. No gastro in sight yet. Lots of burn off happening and the park was full of smoke. Set up camp, lovely spot and settled in for ... read more

Edith Falls (Leliyn) - Litchfield The first town we passed by was Pine Creek, known for the it's railway museum and water gardens. We then took a scenic route on the Daly River - Adelaide River Road. Along the route we noted the termite mounds were bigger than we had seen in a while. We accidentally hit a young male wallaby who darted out onto the road, no damage to our vehicle but he was killed on impact. We also visited Helen falls, but did not walk the creek with no knowledge of distance and crocodiles in the area. We stopped at Adelaide River for fuel, 134.9c/l , odometer 89770kms. We stretched our legs and took in the small street market. Crossing the large bridge over the river, we moved on to Coomalie Creek on the ... read more

Yesterday I spent the day doing washing, some housework and catching up on my blog, while Barry went into Darwin and hung around the town while the ute was being serviced then took it to get four new All Terrain tyres. Hopefully, it will now be set for the next part of our trip – Western Australia. Today, we were woken early by the roar of more jet fighters going off from the military base and heading towards Kakadu. I think that means the joint exercise is still on. Later in the morning, as we prepared to leave, we saw some returning and Barry identified F16s and FA18s, among others. We were rather later leaving than we had intended because our neighbours, John and Denise, at Robbie Robbins Reserve returned from a side trip to Bali, ... read more

Hi travel followers. After almost a 2 week break in Howard Springs/Darwin just chilling out and enjoying the 22C nights and 32C days plus grass in the van park, we thought it was time to catch up on our blogs and let everyone know we are still alive and what we have been up to etc. After Mataranka (the last blog) we headed for Darwin as I needed to get the Cruiser serviced and give it some new tyres etc. Along the way however we stopped off for a day or two at places like Adelaide River (the little Van Park behind the Pub is excellent) and Edith Falls (national park) which was another beautiful spot where we ran across our first "snake" on the walk up to the "top pool" and falls. (see photo) At ... read more

16 Adventures in Australian Deserts The last entry was in Darwin. Since that we have had lots of adventures, so here's a brief outline: Firstly we left Darwin and flew to Adelaide on 6th July. This was mostly to leave our camping gear there while we had a brief trip back to NZ. We had hoped to catch up with Leigh and Janet Gawith of Mollydooker Wines, but they were away. We cuddled the grandchildren (and the children), renewed the drugs one of us needs, and had a meeting or two. We then flew back to Adelaide on 15th July to join Paddy McHugh for our desert adventure in South Australia. There were 12 of us and Paddy had himself and two driver/helpers, making 15 in all. We had three 4WD vehicles and all of us ... read more

Monday 18th would be our last full day in the Darwin area so we felt we should spend as much of it as we could in the heart of the city. Even though it was a Monday morning it took us very little time to reach the centre and we were able to park under cover (desirable because of the heat) just a few meters from the Information Centre. Before we even got inside to collect some info we spotted a touring “duck/croc”! I had seen this special tour bus advertised and it was straight in front of us and seemingly ready to go. So we rushed and bought a couple of the last remaining tickets and made our way on board. The vehicle was amphibious and had been cleverly converted from a troop landing vessel ... read more

We were up and about today to drive to a little place called Batchelor about an hour away from Darwin. Sam had the opportunity to have flying lessons at school (as I said to Ali- it beats the cycling proficiency we did back in the day!) anyway, we thought we'd make a day of it, so as we arrived at Batchelor airfield, we managed to catch a glimpse of Sam who was already airborne before he flew off in a northerly direction. One lad hadn't turned up, so the 3 boys flying today would get a longer flight, and the instructor said if we returned at about 1230, we may be in time to see Sam take off on his second flight. With an hour or two to wait, we drove to a place called ... read more

Hi all, added a map this time so you can see where I have been so far in Australia, plus also added some pickies Yuka who I met on the train (last blog) sent me. After leaving Alice and catching The Ghan to Darwin I was met by Dennis and Mary at the station. Oh forgot to mention the Alice Springs hostel was evacuated at one in the morning on my last night there, when the fire alarm went off! Also the train stopped at Katherine on the way to Darwin, where we could go for a choice of short tours. I went on a canoeing trip where we were driven by bus from the train station to the gorge park and then canoed up the river to the main gorge and back again. Was very ... read more
