Hi From Kings Canyon We did our tour of Coober Pedy and visited a working Opal mine. Interesting to note that the first operation involves sinking a 1m diameter hole to approx. 30m deep. The shafts are then excavated horizontally from anywhere in that 30m profile. It seems to be pot-luck if you strike a vane of opal! The other point of interest is that none of the excavations are required to be backfilled. Hence the moonscape created by piles of spoil. We also visited an underground house and Serbian church. We arrived in Yulara campground on Friday after a quick overnight stop at Mt Ebenezer Roadhouse, approximately 2hrs west. The overnight temperatures have taken a dive as we get deeper into the outback. 4 deg C ?? Shortly after departing Ebenezer, we spotted what we ... read more

Up REALLY early this morning. The coach is picking us up at 05:00 am, so we need to be up at 4.00 am!!! Seems like we have only just gone to bed. First stop is a vantage point where we can photograph Ayers Rock as the rising suns rays hit the rock. (This is the theory!). We get off the coach and the guide sets up a table where we can get coffee and tea and some snacks, we grabbed a cup of tea/coffee then went up to the supposed vantage point to await the sun coming up at 06:27 am. There are two problems: 1) There are about 20 coaches here so to get a shot of the Rock without a head in your shot was only possible if half the photograph was half sky ... read more

Up early and packing again. Limo picked us up at 08:15 and whisked us to Sydney Airport (Well sort off, we got a bit caught up in the rush hour traffic!). The car was another Audi Quattro limo, this time with complimentary morning papers and a bottle of water each. Impression of Sydney: Hotel was brilliant; it was a really vibrant city with lots to do. The main focus is the Harbour area, and being as we were right on the doorstep, it made the stay even more enjoyable. Like most major cities, it is great to visit – but we wouldn’t want to live there! My daughter Nat had warned me that Sydney Airport could be a bugger, with extremely long queues for check-in. They had obviously done quite a few modifications since she was ... read more

Druhy den sa zacal zhurta. Budik zazvonil o 4:00. Vychod slnka a potom tura okolo celeho Uluru. ... read more

Zapad nastal presne 19:40. Fotoaparaty docvakali a auta a autobusy sa opat zacali vracat spat do hotelov. Do jedneho velkeho rezortu uprostred nicoho, uprostred puste. Australcania maju na to skvely vyraz „in the middle of ... read more

To Aborigenci urcite nechceli, aby ich tam prisli rusit dalsi turisti. Videla som najvacsie australske jazero Eyrovo jazero. Z lietadla vyzera byt cele biele, je to solne jazero, ... read more

Woke early to have breakfast and head out to the rock for a guided tour of the Malu walk. Malu is the totem - animal - for the Anangu people, which is the rufus rock wallaby. Unfortunately it is now extinct in the area due to a massive bush fire in 1974 and the feral cat. Learned an amazing amount about the rock today - sedimentary layers are actually now vertical not horizontal, as they would have been layered over 500 million years ago. It is not until you get close that you can see the vertical layers. The rock is red due to iron oxide but there are places where you can see its grey sheen under the red coating. There are lots of caves. Rock paintings on the wall of what is called the ... read more
