Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Sydney - Can't really say much as we'd landed at lunchtime and had flights booked to Perth the following morning at 5am. After the panic in Fiji about Jules' visa not existing (it thankfully did) we grabbed the bags, walked past the "Swine Flu Detectors" (infrared cameras) and then walked through immigration quicker than an Englishman does when returning through Heathrow. Not a word about the visa - touch! Quick look around and a chat with the airport booking desk was useless, we were looking for a luggage lock up to stash the bags so we could wonder round and sleep [View Full Entry]

All that is left in my room was everything that Brooke and Callan didn’t take last night - a box of donuts and a 2L bottle of coke, plus some peanuts. I planned to only have the donut on hand this morning, but last night I dozed off without putting much of a dent in my booze stock. I guess that’s something I’ll take into consideration for the rest of my trip. I’m not going to pack too much because I’ll always end up with more than I came with. At lese there weren’t any nasty hangovers to report! [View Full Entry]

I only put Sydney air port as i could see it across the water from Dez's house, i couldn't find it here. Saturday 21st March 2009 I was shown in the dark where to get the busses from to get to work. So a little different in the daylight but i think i remembered right. I waited for my first bus to come and was getting a little worried, but it eventually came, and i was even luckyer because when i got off at the rite stop my next bus just arrived. So good timing and only took me half an [View Full Entry]

Flying with Aearolineas proved to be a terribly long and unimpressive experience. The in-flight entertainment, which was only initiated on the second flight of 10 hours, was screened on a projector-like square on the wall and would randomly skip between English and Portuguese without warning. During transit in Buenos Aires there was no direction given to the departure gate and it wasnt put on the screen but being the relaxed people they are there was not alarm raised for any passenger that did not work it out themselves. After another sleep woke up to find Sydney was two and a half hours away, the map of Australia appeared in the tv infront of me and we are shown to be skirting Broken Hill it's -50 outside and we are flying at 37 thousand feet. Starting to feel a long way from home, Stephen and Whisky (cat), soon it's another round of food this time a continental deli pack now I'm just wishing to get there as the toilet behind me is starting to smell a bit and the flush is getting on my nerves. Feeling releived that the flight [View Full Entry]

And so dear readers this is the final entry as to my time in Australia. This truly has been the holiday of a lifetime and its hard to pick out the highlights of the trip as everything has just simply been superb. You find me sitting in the Air New Zealand lounge with a glass of chardonnay and a tucking into a rather nice lamb curry and trying to think how I can conclude my writings. I hope you have enjoyed reading my adventures as much as I have enjoyed writing them, I know that I have only really scratched the [View Full Entry]

Well avid readers of the blog, I only felt it fair to reflect on the first week's trip of Rob The Poms Aus-O-Rama - I cant believe that I have only been in the country 5 nights, it feels much longer and that to me is a good thing. The Aussie way of life is really something quite hard to beat. Sure they work hard, and that is evident as you walk around the capital and watch the Sydneyers around Circular Quay rushing off the ferries to their work place but what you also note is the work life balance - [View Full Entry]
