We had a very lazy morning this morning before heading across to the beach to have lunch at The Kiosk again. Well, actually, I was lazy and Bernie spent the morning on the phone with Centrelink and MyGov trying to sort some stuff out for his parents. Unfortunately, after spending most of the morning in phone queues and talking with useless call centre staff, his problem remained unresolved. Aaargh! The BLATs at The Kiosk were very good on Friday so we ordered the BLATs again and enjoyed them while we watched a young boy tearing around chasing the brush turkeys. The brush turkeys ran away, but can’t have been too bothered by the harassment as they returned pretty quickly to resume pottering around the kiosk. It was frustrating that there was no parental intervention to dissuade ... read more

This morning we drove to the Coffs Harbour International Marina for our 9.00am whale watching tour with Jetty Dive. The whales are quite close to the shore at the moment as they migrate northwards so we found some whales almost as soon as we were out through the breakwater. The whales we spent the most time watching were a group of three, two females and a calf that was born last season. We saw plenty of breathing spouts and tail fins but, unfortunately, they just wouldn’t breach for us. Towards the end of our tour a pod of dolphins, including several youngsters, started playing around the boat and then playing with the whales. It was amazing to be surrounded by so many sea mammals! All too soon it was time to return to the marina. During ... read more

Today we drove inland along Waterfall Way to Dorrigo. Our first stop was at the very accessible Dangar Falls situated just out of Dorrigo township. It was very civilised here at Dangar Falls with toilets AND Gordi’s Coffee Caravan. If you were a local it could be a nice Sunday morning sort of thing to do – walk out to the falls and have a coffee?? There is an overlook at the top of the falls and an excellent trail down to the base of the falls so we were able to view and photograph the falls from two angles! We backtracked along Waterfall Way to the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre. We visited the rainforest centre in 2019, but it was very late in the day and we just had time to walk out the Sky Walk ... read more

When we arrived in Sawtell we noticed the signs advertising a market this Saturday. Expecting a street market I was a little disappointed that it turned out to be the local CWA fundraiser. There were a lot of plants on offer, some turned wood items, vintage doilies and various stalls offering second hand treasures. I splurged on an $10 kookaburra brooch, but resisted the $120 amethyst brooch even though he was prepared to discount it to $80. While we were out we continued down Elizabeth Street to then walk back along First Avenue (the main street). I spotted a novelty watering can in the front window of the local discount shop. I went in to check it out in a bit more detail and ended up buying said watering can AND then got into quite a ... read more

We had a lovely relaxing day today. We didn’t set the alarm seeing as we didn’t have to reach a new destination by tonight. After a late breakfast we walked to Boambee Head along the walking track and then returned along the beach. Making our way up from the beach, we found The Kiosk Sawtell Beach and decided that it was time for lunch. Two BLATs later we made our way back to our apartment … via the bakery with two French vanilla slices! We had a short outing to Toormina Gardens (local shopping centre) for some supplies before lazing away the rest of the afternoon on our lovely sunny balcony. Friday night fish and chips for dinner from Fries On The Side directly across the street from our apartment. How convenient. Steps: 11,986 (8.12kms)... read more

On the shortest day of the year we found ourselves driving up into the hinterland again, this time to Nimbin via Bangalow, Clunes and Dunoon. Travelling on the back roads was an experience as there is still a lot of flood damage that has not yet been repaired. We encountered several sections where work is currently being undertaken and another area where there are automated traffic lights controlling a section of road that is still reduced to one lane due to a land slip. It was a beautiful morning in Nimbin and there were lots of people enjoying breakfast/brunch in the sun. Also quite a few people enjoying roll your owns on benches along Cullen Street. Possibly (probably?) not smoking tobacco?? I bought a hat in NImbin, but no weed …despite being asked if we were ... read more

Staying on the Coffs Coast was an opportunity to revisit some of the places where we had enjoyed family holidays down through the years. It was also an opportunity to explore some family history. The family history exploration unfolded into a personal episode from the SBS series of Who Do You Think You Are. We randomly chose to stay at Sawtell Caravan Park, where we discovered on arrival, the Sawtell Historical Society office attached to the Park Office. After noting that the Historical Society was open the next day, we took a drive around Sawtell and Coffs Harbour to check out the beaches, creeks and ocean baths, as we were eager to get in the water. We were a bit nervous about swimming in the ocean in the Ballina area. First stop the next day was ... read more

Hi travel followers. We just realised it has been "five weeks" since the last blog. Where do the days and weeks go!!! We must say that the time has been action packed and the moss definitely hasn't grown under the "van". From Old Bar on the last blog, we travelled to Hawks Nest for a few days. Unfortunately there was a strong wind blowing most of the time we were there and all we could do is many of the walks around town and along the beaches etc. It was then on to Stockton Beach (Newcastle) for a week where we do our annual doctors check-ups and Lyn does her skin checks etc. I must say the weather here was excellent with beautifully warm days and we got the chance to do some swimming at the ... read more

Perhaps I jinxed us by publicly declaring how well the girls were sleeping. Perhaps the girls are yet again trying to teach us something about expectations... but it is amazing how quickly you can become undone by a few rough nights. Those pre-molar teeth seem to be causing some grief after all. Hence the lack of blogging because my bed time has become 7.30 again instead of 8.30! Anyhow, this is meant to be a travel blog so I guess I should be writing about exciting things we are doing rather than having a whinge about the lack of sleep we have been having. Despite foggy brains and hurting heads we have still been determined to make the most of our holiday. Since I last wrote we went to bongil bongil national park for another rainforest ... read more

"Welcome to sunny sawtell" reads the sign as you come in to the cute seaside town. Ironically it was the first cloudy day we have had so far on the trip. Though, as the sign promised, the afternoon did clear up -- while the girls happily napped and napped and napped! This trip has seen a whole lot of firsts in the girls' development: they have learnt to touch their head, clap their hands and today they had their first ever 3 hour day time nap. They must have been worn out by their morning at Boambee creek where, I am delighted to announce, they finally enjoyed themselves in the water. Perhaps they will be beach babes after all. The creek is another beautiful salt estuary which is part of a reserve and absolutely perfect for ... read more
