Hi guys! April 25th was a national holiday here in Australia called Anzac Day, which is a memorial day celebrating the ANZAC's (Australian New Zealand Army Corps) who fought in Gallipoli. It's a very important day in Australian history, and its also the day when everyone goes to the bar or the RSL (Retired Serviceman’s League) to play a game called Two-Up. We're not sure of all of the history, but basically two-up is game of gambling on a coin toss which is legal only on Anzac day. What it entails is one person tossing 3 coins in the air and letting them land within a circle on the floor. Before the coins are tossed, the crowd makes bets amongst themselves by yelling "I have $10 on tails" and someone near by saying "I'll take the ... read more

Found our weay to the car hire place at the Mecure Centre, then went back to get luggage from Hotel. Had a lovely breakfast. Collected our car, a white Ford Falcon, very nice. Automatic. Drove out of Sydney over the Harbour Bridge, and headed north. Straight up the Pacific Highway. It was like driving through the amazon rain forest - very lush. Lots of interesting things for sale on the roadside along the way. As well as vineyards and wineries, there was "avos" (avocados) figs, tomatoes, mushrooms, all manner of other fruit, puppies, guinea pigs, birds andn horses!!!! Arrived at Port Stephens Motor Lodge, Nelson Bay. Went to shops to get some food and beer etc. big shock, bacardi is $38 a bottle!! Took a walk down to the beach and quay. Lots of choice for ... read more

After our early night, we both woke up very early this morning. We were down on the beach taking bphotographs of the sun rising! Went back to room and had breakfast, then went back to the quay and booked a cruise to see the dolphins. ($100) This was about 8.30 so we had a couple of hours to pass. Went into Nelson Bay and looked around. Bought sun screen and went to an internet place. Pottered back to the quay and had a coffee at the ajoining cafe. Port s Boarded our boat the "Tamboi" and went for a sail around Port Stephens. Saw lots of dolphins - magical. They live in Port Stephens all the time. The captain of our boat was a young man whose father weas skippering one of the other cruise boats ... read more

Alissa very kindly invited us to stay with her and her family for a few days so we started our 1st road trip and followed Lis home (Tues 2 Oct). It was the most amazing scenery and the beaches were awesome. Unfortunately it was scalding hot (even on the tag scale!) and the wind was quite strong so I didn't get to take any photos, we were just trying to find shade (and a milkshake). After some amazing hospitality until Thurs we thought we'd better be brave and go it alone so we headed for Nelson's Bay, a great spot for dolphin watching. We headed for Samurai YHA for the night, a great hostel on the edge of a forest. Having agreed to cook macaroni cheese I was quite amused to see they had an outside ... read more

The Hunter Valley is rather beautiful and we arrived in Cessnock, excited to be starting our trip proper, and to be in wine country. Wine in Australia is cheap and excellent, even the cheapest, nastiest stuff purchased in boxes for only a few dollars is drinkable. With the luxury of our own transport we were able to tour the region ourselves, for there are countless vineyards and all have showrooms which operate wine tasting sessions. Selecting a few randomly, we enjoyed the free wine (and cheese!), and made a couple of shrewd purchases. If you are without your own transport you can join a tour group that will drive you round until you can drink no more. A gabble of Shelas on our campsite returned legless and kept us amused with their shrieking, until it became ... read more
