It’s out there… way out there. And La Push is one of the finest surfing and camping destinations in the state. When the waves are good, it is intense. Big beautiful busty bountiful crests pitch over onto the neoprene heads of surfers. And when the waves are not on, when the sea is blown out—winds howling, rains horizontal, tree trunks slamming the rocky shores—then plenty of hiking, exploring and camping infuses the experience. Either way, it is a stunning part of the Pacific Northwest coastline. I pull up late at night. I hear the ocean. I smell the sea. I see nothing but bonfires dotting the beach amidst a deep blackness found at this very edge. I’m exhausted from my tr... read more

There are rules to the road and I was obviously ready and willing to learn. I jumped in the car, hours late and having just packed, and was completely discombobulated. But what mattered most was to be in the car, heading north, heading west, heading south, heading east. I was reeling for the Queets River, some 40 miles south of Forks, Washington. But like I said I was late, and my compatriot who was going to “introduce” me to the steelhead country up the Lower Queets Valley was missing. For three days and three nights we planned a serious backcountry fly-fishing expedition for the lustrous sea-run trout. But he bailed (that’s right MC… play is far superior than work!) So I was on my own, without a guide, without any idea where I was headed except ... read more

The best part of the drive to Olympic: Aberdeen. What a shithole. Poor Kurt Cobain. The town sign to Aberdeen says, “Welcome to Aberdeen. Come as you are.” Ick. Ew. Cringe. Follow that up by the giant pictures of him at the local McDonalds, next to the ANGUS BURGER! Thankfully for him, he’s dead and doesn’t have to see the way his memory is being exploited by a town he hated. Anyway, that isn’t the only exciting town to pass through (and by exciting I mean fascinating) near Olympic National Park. But we’ll get to that later… We made reservations at Kalaloch campground, but they only had reservations for the first night that we would be there, so we weren’t sure if we were going to get a second night, or go to a different area ... read more

We have been on the peninsula for almost a week. We have had a great time exploring the area. After the crab trapping which only yielded the one small crab we decided to drive north on the peninsula along the eastern shore toward Port Angeles. Beautiful drive through forested area folloing the Hood Canal most of the way. Had lunch at the Dockside Restaurant at the marina in Sequim. Delicious! David had a fried fish filet sandwich. I had the bouilliabase which had salmon, shrimp, scallops, oysters and clams. We then went to Graymarsh Farms where you can pick your own berries or lavendar. A field of lavendar in bloom is a sight to behold. We picked raspberries (best I've ever had), loganberries and blackberries and bought a bunch of lavendar as well as 2 artichokes. ... read more

We arrived at our campground on the Olympic Peninsula yesterday afternoon. We are in a campround looking across the Hood Canal. Beautiful view and just a short walk to their dock and the canal. It is very hot - over 100 degrees today which is unusual here so we didn't do too much. It is supposed to be cooler by Friday, hopefully. It is also the first day of crab trapping/fishing so David bought a license and got a crab trap from the campground and tried his luck. These are small crabs and only need to be over 5" to keep. So far today he caught one that is 6" and a keeper. We had it as an appetizer for dinner. Not much to eat on a 6" red crab, but tasty just the same. Don't ... read more

You will feel like you're standing at the edge of the world as you search for the horizon on the Olympic shore. Here, everything is wild and smells like Christmas. Fog clings to every surface and breathes a humidity into the air that creates a skin of sweat. The haze crowds even the sun from the sky, sending down the faintest, soft white light to the sandy beaches. And before the tall and dense forests of Washington rise from the shore, a boneyard of fallen trees bridges the way, the wood gray and waterworn. Bumbling and tired, we spent the day at 2nd Beach in La Push. Despite the clouds and humidity, Jenny Karankawa, Generalissimo, and Texas Red suspended all suspicion (and distilled the Twilight fever), clambering over the salty trunks to explore the beach and ... read more

After completing my Swiftwater Rescue Technician course on Sunday, I called up my friend Mark who had flown out to Seattle for his spring break the day before and was staying with our high school and college classmate Anchi. When I asked for directions, I was told... drive towards the Space Needle, we'll meet you there - and thus, I began my my first entry of Seattle headed straight for the iconic Seattle Space Needle. Soon we had rendezvoused and were headed back to Anchi's very nice flat with a spectacular view of both the Space Needle and the Puget Sound. After a hearty meal at a local Mexican joint, where I had the "King Elvis" burrito, we all headed back to Anchi's place to crash. As Mark only had three more days to spend in ... read more

For anyone seeking a quick getaway from the hustle of Seattle, Lake Quinault is a perfect destination. Several years ago, Jer and I stayed overnight at the historical Lake Quinault Lodge. We enjoyed our visit, though it was brief (we had a ferry to catch in Port Angeles early the following morning), and always intended to return. A ten year anniversary seemed a good excuse. The Past The last time we visited, we stayed in the boat house, which is adjacent to the main lodge. It was late May and still quite cool at night and in the morning. Our room was cozy--just what you would expect of a a room in a boat house, I suppose. If anyone reading this entry is weighing pros and cons of the rooms at Lake Quinnault Lodge, I recall ... read more
