We decided to join my parents for a day trip to Mt. Rainier. We went to Paradise, which is where we have gone several times before. We packed a picnic lunch and ate as soon as we reached Paradise. We were so hungry, we just camped out on the hillside right where we had parked--not even bothering to find a picnic area. After lunch, we decided to hike up the trail to see the glacier. It was beautiful up there. We even saw some wildlife. ... read more

At the end of July when the temperature in Thurston County exceeded 100 degrees, the Oly Trio (Paddy, faithful wife Nan and faithful pooch Shaddy) escaped for four nights to the Cougar Rock campground on the slopes of Mt. Rainier in the cool view of the nearby glaciers. The images in the blog can be viewed, and are available for purchase, at NW Exposures. I’m a wildscapes photographer living in Olympia, Washington. In addition to my online gallery, I participate in art shows and festivals. We towed our Quicksilver light-weight-aluminum, fold-out tent trailer behind Paddy’s four cylinders Subaru Forester. The Quicksilver has a GVW of 1,500 lbs. We can stow about 300 lbs in it. The Subi can tow 2,000 lbs including passengers, so that gives us some room to carry gear in the car. On ... read more

Sabbath morning was spent visiting the ‘Breath of Life’ church in Seattle, where one of our previous Pastors in London is now the resident Pastor. He was unaware that we were travelling out to Seattle, so had quite a shock when entering the church to see us both sitting there! Enjoyed the morning visiting this very welcoming church, but due to time schedules we were unable to linger and enjoy ‘pot luck’ and catch up with Pastor as we would have liked to. Grabbed a bite to eat before heading out to Kim’s house, to pick her up for our drive to Mt. Rainier. It took roughly an hour to drive there through some very beautiful scenery. We chose to enter Mt Rainier National Park through Paradise, as the other entrance into the park was still ... read more

Well, its all falling into place, after spending the afternoon watching a volcano grow I am now in a truck stop rest station cooking supper & Graeme is playing his newly acquired guitar. The last volcano I walked / crawled up (Ecuador) I remember thinking “once is probably enough” but this was American style and all very civilised. Luckily the "James" disaster affect did not occur and the volcanos current state is still "on alert" but not very active. They have closed the close up treking trails though, So a quick update on our travels. First of all don’t think its all a holiday here, in fact there doesn’t yet appear to be a spare moment in the day. See pictures of me at work. On the way to the coast we stopped for our last ... read more

I woke up at seven with Brea and we are playing SORRY! on the computer. Everyone else got up around 9 and Roy made cheese omelets and bacon and we shared our breakfast muffins. We all had a chance to havce a hot shower, which was awesome, considering we hadn't showered since Friday night before we left! Nikki fought with Dot over food and Dot wouldn't even come out to me, if Nikki was by me. They got over it eventually though. We drove to Mt. Rainier N.P. hoping to camp at the White River Campground, but it was disgustingly full. We drove out and are now camped in Mount Baker and Snoqualamie N.F. Grantwood is 15 miles north of here which is good, we need gas badly. Mt. Rainier N.P. was breathtaking. The trees are ... read more

He who angers you conquers you._____Elizabeth Kenny LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS Headings: Heading Bold Text: Bold Text Italic Text: Italic Text June 10, 2005, Friday. We were off to hike the Grove of Old Patriarchs early. The old patriarchs, of course, are the magnificent old trees. Look up and see the canopied universe! The Douglas Fir trees loom some 200 feet high and are 1,000 years, yes one thousand years old!! The Western Red Cedars, Douglas Fir and Western Hemlock dwarf the trail and create a beautiful, lush—almost “holy” atmosphere. The hike was grand. As we continue to drive, we round the mountain roads and suddenly we are confronted with THE MOUNTAIN. The day is clear and we are face to face with the largest mountain in the Cascade Range, MT. RAINIER. Talk about a ... read more

The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes. Frank Lloyd Wright LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 9, 2005, Thursday. We were awake early. It was very bright and our night clock indicated almost 7 am. So we got up to go for a walk and discovered we hadn’t adjusted the clock for Pacific Time. It was nearing 6 am. Well, off we went to see Yakima. We walked and walked ‘til we reached the main street then located a greenway trail for biking/hiking. It is a paved trail with scattered benches and playground areas. It looped back from the way we came. Soooo we walked about 2 hours and returned for a quick breakfast. Time to get organized, we used the dump and refilled the water before leaving for Mt. Rainier National Park (NP). ... read more
