blog 09-26-17 Mt St Helen The rain ended during the night and the stars came out, perfect timing. Today we are heading for Mt St Helen and it is looking like a splendid day to view the mountain. I had been here 2 yrs ago and there was so much smoke from forest fires that I couldn't see the mountain at all. Today we could see it from 50 miles away and as we got closer it got bigger. To make it super outstanding, there was a layer of snow from about 6,000 ft so with the blue sky behind, the mountain stood out perfectly. It took over an hour to get to the visitor's center at Johnston Ridge about 50 miles from the I-5 exit. The road curved around mountains covered in trees, some planted ... read more

Blog 09-25-17 Long Beach to Chehalas, WA To go east in Washington you have to go into Oregan and use their roads, the ones in WA are not suitable. We left the beach this morning much to Linus's displeasure, and headed east and north. We are heading to Chehalas, another Thousand Trails campground near Mt St. Helens. But first we stopped in Longview, WA to go to an RV repair place to see if they could help Ginnie with her electric cable. Somewhere along the line there was a power surge that semi-fused the 50 amp cable to a 30 amp adaptor. They were impossible for us to disconnect from each other rendering the 50 amp cable basically a 30 amp. That is fine as long as you don't want to run everything in the rv ... read more

Nothing much new to report but I am safe and not in any of the fire areas. Yesterday I explored a little but spent most of the day getting my hair cut. I found a local beauty parlor and the owner took 2 1/2 hours to cut and color my hair. OMG I thought I'd never get out of there. All of the town's gossip is now stored in my brain, thanks to Stephanie. She didn't do 2 things at once so while talking she stopped whatever she was doing and put all her energies into my getting the news. I went to Mossy Rock, a town with a lagging economy, because it was close. They need some kind of industry to spur things along and give the town a transfusion. They have farms, and logging ... read more
This little frog was on my chair. I found him as I was packing up to move. He almost made a long trip.
After finding one frog I looked carefully on my other chair and sure enough his cousin was there. Cute feet.

Heading South I've been as far north as I'm going to go this trip so now it's time to head south and then a little east for a few days. My time in La Conner has been wonderful and I've really enjoyed being with nature again and just sitting by the water with it's ebbs and flows. The air has smelled wonderful so close to the ocean water and the freshness it brings. Being nestled in the pines, the cedars and spruce trees on a bed of pine needles offered it's own set of smells and feelings. So calming. Now it's time to face civilization again and head east then south to Silver Creek which is about an hour and half north of Portland. I had to negotiate the traffic through Seattle first and that was ... read more

Picnicking at the park... This park flooded in 2007 taking out the main bridge. We crossed the only 1 lane bridge to get in. The park was pretty, forested and ferns and pretty empty. The falls were small at this time. ... read more

Getting up early again, we left Vancouver, WA for Chehalis WA. On the way we stopped at Mt St Helens visitors center on I-5 and saw a movie. Incredible the power and devastation that a volcano can do. Spirit Lake moved 200 ft. Later on we arrived at the 1000 Trails Park in Chehalis. It is a beautiful 330 acre park with forested trees and ferns everywhere. We love our campsite. The next day we took the truck to Northwest Trek Wildlife Park and drove out among many animals in a tram seeing caribou, elk, moose, rams and more + grizzlies, cougars and the like. The bison herds were grunting, pawing the dirt and fighting for power amongst the males. Wouldn't want to get in the way of them! Today we are resting at camp and ... read more
