La Conner is our first stop on our round-the-world trip, we arrived here about 30 hours after locking the front door at home. La Conner, where on Earth is that I can imagine you asking? Well, it’s in the US state of Washington, about half way between Seattle and the Canadian border and on the shores of Puget Sound. We’re so close to Canada that the weather app on my phone is giving me the forecast for Victoria on Vancouver Island. La Conner is not very big and according to Wikipedia has a population of around 900. A sign in town lists its various claims to fame, one of which is something like Washington’s Best Town for Romantic Weekends – consequently it has a large selection of eating establishments, galleries, museums and a craft brewery. The ... read more

blog 09-14-17 Deception Pass There were so many phone calls to make and blogs to post and internet things that needed our attention that we had to go to the rec hall to see if we could get internet there. There were 2 bars on the phone so we were thrilled and spent about 2 hours sitting in the sun getting our internet activities done. By mid afternoon we were ready to head on our last tourist activity here before we left this area. Deception Pass was about a 20 min drive and the weather was perfect for the experience. Captain Vancouver was in this area in 1792 and thought that the water coming from between these two rocks was a swift moving river, but one of his men took a crew and small boat and ... read more

blog 09-13-17 Mt Vernon Well we had to do it, yes wash and cleaning. Ginnie had 2 loads in the washer before I was out of bed. Just when we thought all the wash would be done a maintanence man came into the laundry and said didn't you see this sign, the laundry is closed Sept 13th to fix a water line break. Well no, we didn't see it so at least that last load for Ginnie got finished. It was the early bird in this case. So we relaxed around the campground for the afternoon and ended up going to see the Lone Tree. It is a Douglas Fir that is very meaningful to the Native Americans here, it is a guiding tool to come into this channel. The tree was damaged in a storm ... read more

blog 09-12-17 Orchas ! It was up and out early today to catch the whale watching boat out of Anacordes to the San Juan Islands to see if we could find the Orchas that feed here. We were on the newest ship of their fleet a catamaran that could hold 130 people and travel at 25 knots. There are 3 floors, the main floor with padded seats and tables, the second deck with some inside seating and outside seating and the third deck with metal seats and a top for shade but no sides. All the decks had walk around viewing areas with great viewing from almost anywhere. Our departure time was 11 am and we were pretty close. The ship slipped out of the harbor and between the islands and we were on our adventure. ... read more

Blog 09-11-17 Anacortes, WA Somewhere in this town there had to be a car wash, a laundromat, and cell service. We are right between La Conner and Anacortes so we have to go to either town to get coverage. Anacortes was our first choice because it is bigger and our chances of having what we wanted were better. As we drove along the highway I spotted a snowcapped mountain in the distance to our east and I thought it was Mt Baker but wasn't sure. There was a park in town that was up high and served as a lookout point and from there you could see everything. On one side of the rock you could see the whole of Anacortes with it's substantial marina and on the other side the sound with all it's ships ... read more

Blog 09-19-17 La Conner, WA Boy are we getting good at breaking camp. After 4 days in Leavenworth there was no preperation the night before to pack up so in the morning we had it all to do. But we have gotten efficient doing the tasks at hand and before you knew it the dogs were walked and there was nothing else to do but drive away. The night before we had decided to take Rt 2 across the Cascades instead of driving way out of our way to take the interstate. I had talked to a local person the night before and she assured me that trucks take Rt 2 all the time with no problems especially with no snow in the forecast. So off we went and the scenery knocked our socks off. Some ... read more

HOMEWARD BOUND Sitting here in La Conner at the Channel Lodge for our last night out, it is with mixed feelings that I write this, our penultimate blog. I can't quite believe the trip is almost at an end. Over two months of bliss, fun and adventure. My butt will never be the same again. What a perfect, poetic final full day of riding to round out our travels, with a variety of environments and scenery stimulating us along the way. Starting with sunshine and blue skies shining on red apple orchards in Washington State just outside Okanogan, WA, to lush green firs and pines in the Cascade mountains, to recently burned out forest stands projecting pungent smells of fresh ash in the crisp air, to a nothing short of spectacular with drop-dead gorgeous scenery on ... read more

Out of the house on time after a frenetic morning cleaning and packing - 70 pounds extra per bike consisting of clothes, camping gear, tools, iPad, camera, and stuff. Lots of stuff. Down to Mother's for one more hug. Then to the start line Mile Zero to reset the odometers. Nothing stopping us from going but the leaving. Took a very roly poly ferry ride to Anacortes where the rain cloud in Sidney caught up to us just as we were riding up the ramp off the ferry. Do NOT drop the bike Helli. A day of excitement and anticipation was replaced with a day of sitting and waiting. Waiting for customs. Waiting for the ferry. Waiting in port at Friday Harbor. Waiting for customs again. Waiting for the rain and wind to stop. We did ... read more

Sunday August 19, 2012 Port McNeill to Gowland Harbor (near Campbell River) We were sent out early again by threatened afternoon winds in Johnstone Strait. They never materialized but from early on the tide was against us and we found some helpful eddies along the South shoreline. I misread the tide and current charts and we ended up at Seymour Narrows at a full flood of twelve knots just like last year. This year being a year older and having experienced full flood I decided I didn’t want to get knocked around again so we pulled into Plumper Bay out of the current and dropped the anchor for a couple of hours. Besides I’m into a good summer novel and it reads just as well on either side of the tide. Seymour Narrows was ... read more
