Well it's been almost a week since I've managed to add a post here. I have been far too busy enjoying my holiday to share with you lovely folk! But now I can catch you up on a week's worth of japes. We left Washington DC bright and early on Tuesday morning in our Jeep Cherokee and, having set up the Go-Pro on the bonnet of the car we were good to go. Our first leg was about a 1.5hr drive from DC to Fort Royal where we stopped for a diner breakfast before turning into the Shenandoah National Park and the top of the Skyline Drive. Well. Wow. It was a glorious, hot and sunny day and we wound our way for a few hours along a road that takes you through the park. It ... read more

Right after Columbus Day, we left AL and headed north to see family and friends. Our first visit would be with friends Kurt and Annette in NC. We had last seen them this spring in FL and since then we both had endured problems with our RVs and had to have them repaired. Annette had undergone surgery for back issues and we really wanted to see how they were doing and visit them in northern North Carolina. So we followed our usual path through Chattanooga and Knoxville and north on I-40. But instead of continuing on I-81 to VA, we headed east on I-40 towards Asheville, NC. We'd been over that road a number of years ago, but apparently we were a) younger or b) had forgotten what is was like. It's a lovely road, lots ... read more

Where do you come from? That’s our Pub! Nice to have you here! Come on, let’s have a beer together!”. Jap, wir hatten innerhalb von zwei Minuten zehn betrunkene Einheimische an der Backe, die uns nicht mehr gehen lassen wollten. Well, it was fun :-) Wir blieben zwei Nächte auf dem idyllischen Campground bevor es uns weiter zog. Das nächste Ziel war der sogenannte Skyline Drive durch den Shenandoah National Park ... read more

We left Pennsylvania and headed south to Virginia. First stop was at Misty Mountain Campground outside of Greenwood which was close to Charlottesville. While in this area I visited Highland which was the home of James Monroe. They are doing archaeology digs to further study the area. The tour guide provided interesting information regarding Monroe, his life at Highland and especially about his 40 year friendship with Thomas Jefferson who lived just down the road. I then went down the road to Monticello which was much grander than Highland. They give a guided tour of the house with interesting information and his life at Monticello, It was sad to learn that both Jefferson and Monroe had financial difficulties through their lives and both had to sell many of their possessions to pay their debts. I tried ... read more

Also, Katherine B. attends Liberty University. They're roommates. We did not see Liberty University. We had a good 45 minute visit with Katherine. Glenn bought her lunch. It was her first day of school. We have met her before, but she didn't remember. She is a missionary kid from Mexico. Erica was working the whole time of our Panera visit however when she "clocked out", we sat and visited with her for 10 minutes before she had ... read more

Are we good or just lucky?? Today, we said our goodbyes to Amy and family. It was the first day back to school for Abby (10th grade) and Jake (9th). Good luck to them. We drove North towards Lexington up I-77 and I-81. As we progressed, Jackie started to search for a nearby winery to visit and maybe have some lunch. Once into Virginia, she located a promising vineyard and we left the Interstate in search of the WHITEBARRLE Winery. I give Jackie five stars for her pick. We arrived about five minutes before the winery opened for business. We were the only guests there and waited inside the winery until we were welcomed. Our hostess, Tess, was terrific. She was the expecting wife of the owner, Rik. She told us of the winery history and ... read more

I found a Starbuck that Glenn and I could "chill out" and wait for our 4:30pm meeting time with Amy and Josh.Amy is the daughter of Dave and Kathi. Amy's uncle is Gary Beekman. She traveled down to Bolivia back in the 90's with her dad to help out with our SAM mission conference. So, it had been nearly 25 plus years since we had seen her. We had several hours to kill. Glenn needed to get some gas. So while he filled up the tank at Kroger's, I went into the grocery store and got some lettuce and cheese for our upcoming Virginia Ham Sandwich. We also had time to do a letterbox. My favorite. As we sat around the table, we talked about all of the names of the children. And how they got their names, and the middle names also. I think it is important that we acknowledge each of the kids. I encouraged Rebekah and her upcoming responsibilities as a teen and getting her driver's license.
