Through a combination of luck and good mangement, this 4th of July we awoke in one of the most famous towns in America. Independance Day is a very big deal in Gettysburg (and the rest of the country for that matter). Civil war enthusiasts from all over the nation had gathered to re-enact the famous battle staged at Gettysburg, so naturally we went along to take a look. With the temperature already near 40 degrees before it was even 10am we joined a couple of thousand other people in the middle of a huge field, ready to experience the battle for ourselves. Gez and I took a walk around beforehand and got chatting with a few of the participants. These people are passionate about their hobby and were very keen to talk to us about their ... read more

Since I started moving northward I have run into more unsettled weather (rain!) However, the one morning it was clear and cool so I decided to make the drive into West Virginia. Casey has done a lot of white-water rafting in W. Virginia and both he and Beverley really enjoy it there. To get to West Virginia I had to climb over part of the Appalachian Mountains. What a beautiful drive. A LOT of trees though, and the road was very narrow and twisty. At one point I had planned to take the motor home into W. Virginia for a week but am glad I didn’t attempt it, it would’ve been very hard on the equipment. I will go back one day but not via this route! West Virginia was a part of the State of ... read more

Now that the season is changing the weather was perfect for a day out to down town Washington. Form the hotel Tracy and I took a bus to the nearest Subway station and from there straight to down town. As you exit the Subway station we were at the back of the White House (with all the security). We walked down The Ellipse (the park below the White House) and went to the Washington Monument. Form the hill we saw the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S Capital Building. It feels like you are in a movie when you stand there. On the way back we got to see the famous view of the White House. There were snipers on the roof (over reacting if you ask me) scanning for danger. Washington was much more relaxed than ... read more

Up early to catch out 11.30 flight. As it was international and going back into the US we got there early. Said our goodbyes to Gary and Carolyn and thanked them for looking after us for the past three days. Got into the airport at about 9am and printed off our boarding passes which we checked in last night and then joined the line to get our tags for our bags. They dont take the bags there so we had to join another line to go to customs. What felt like hours later we were inside! Joined another line to get our passports stamped and the usual questions and then dropped off our bags. Then joined another massive line for the metal detector which did go for hours. It was 11.20 and we are like hmmmmmm ... read more

Day 175 (Sunday 11/10/09, NJJ) Metro in to DC on what turned out to be National Coming Out Day. Off to see Jackson statue, Pennsylvania Ave, and property number 1600, the Treasury building, Sherman Statue, front of White House with completed 'gazebo', Pulaski statue, Old Post Office Tower, Petersen House (where Lincoln died), Ford's Theatre (where Lincoln was shot), J Edgar Hoover FBI Building, passed National Archives (closed), to Grant Memorial, Capitol Building, US Supreme Court. Lunch at Subway. Walked to Union Station. Metro to Smithsonian for sights nearby - many of those seen before but also went to National Holocaust Museum which made me very emotional, it was very well-presented and moving. Food then hotel in evening. ... read more

Day 174 (Saturday 10/10/09, NJJ) Breakfast at hotel which included custard-filled chocolate-topped doughnuts. Got the Metro from Crystal City to the Smithsonian. First sight in Washington DC was the Smithsonian National Museum of America History after wandering across the National Mall. The museum was great - the best exhibits were on the Star-Spangled Banner, the American Presidency, Abraham Lincoln, Americans at War and photographs of black Washington. On next to the Smithsonian where the hall of mammals and the dinosaur hall were the hightlights. We walked across towards The White House which was fab but Barack was having a massive 'gazebo' put up which spoilt the front view a bit. The Washington Memorial was cool. Then on to see numerous other sights - Constitution Gardens, Memorial to the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Vietname ... read more
