Today is cave day! We're staying in Luray, so naturally we will be visiting Luray Caverns. There are a couple of other caves in the area, so today will be the day of caves. Since Luray Caverns is our first stop and is only about a mile up the road and doesn't open until 9:00, we were able to take our time about breakfast. Last night we walked into town and picked up a box from the post office, so this morning when the post office opened at 8:30, we walked into town again with what we hope to be the last box of t-shirts to send home. Then we hopped on the bike and headed over to Luray Caverns. Luray Caverns has expanded over the years from just a show cave, to a complex. It ... read more

Today we bid the North a fond farewell and officially return to the South. We're have about 2 weeks left to go on this trip and we are starting to feel like we are in the home stretch. After a quick breakfast at the hotel, we headed back north and west out of Delaware on into Maryland. We stayed far enough north to just skirt around northern Baltimore. I have been to Baltimore several times, and while I really like the downtown area, it's not really great for motorcycles. So we will save Baltimore for some other time. Most of the roads out of Delaware and through Maryland were about the same. We mostly followed Liberty Heights Ave/ MD-26 from Baltimore to Frederick. Mostly it was suburban secondary roads with lots of fast food, gas stations, ... read more

Today we decided to sleep in and get a late start. We have heard about the Luray Caverns, which is about 30-45 minutes away from our cabin. And leave it to me to realize that I forgot my DSLR. I know the photographer in the family for the camera. Good thing I have a decent camera phone (still doesn't compare though). This place was a little tricky for us to find. We followed google maps directions and got to the location BUT, thinking its caverns, it would be in the middle of nowhere, right? Turns out it is in the middle of a shopping center. We just drove past it thinking the maps were wrong. We went in and got our ticket and had time to go around and walk the center. There are many things ... read more

After a night in Harrisonburg we headed into the Shenandoah National Park, paying the $15 entry fee which was good for 7 days. Shame we were only going to be there for a couple. It was difficult not to make comparisons with the Blue Ridge Parkway as we drove along Skyline Drive. Skyline is a much better road with clearly a funding advantage. This is probably down to the entry fee and its proximity to Washington DC. We saw many signs saying "Your Recovery Dollars At Work" which is, we're told, one of Obama's schemes. We actually entered Skyline about a third of the way down and continued North stopping at one or two viewpoints. Many of them were closed though. "Your Recovery Dollars At Work" is obviously a long term project which rather spoils the ... read more

Today we’re going to go for a float on the river. We’ve brought two kayaks and two inner tubes. The lady at the front desk told me yesterday that the river was “very, very low” and there was only one 3-mile section of the river (#16-#19) that was “even runnable”. She warned, “you wouldn’t even want to attempt to do any of the other parts”. Coincidentally (or not) this also just happened to be the section they were offering transportation to that weekend. For $60.00 they would drop us off and pick us up. Sixty bucks? We didn’t even need our boats transferred. All we needed was a ride from the end back to the start. We saw numerous people on the river yesterday. It couldn’t possibly be as bad as she described. After yesterday’s experiences ... read more

We awaken to another beautiful morning. As anyone who has tent-camped can attest, the weather can literally make or break a trip, and so far, we couldn’t have asked for anything better. It was sunny and hot during the day and cool and mild during the nights. Not a cloud in the sky. After yesterday’s successful trip, we decide that today we will float the section that was being run by the outfitter (#16 to #19). This section is just slightly longer than yesterday’s and features several ledges, swimming holes, turtles (deep and slow spots), and a section described as a “Class II Rapid”. Before floating today though, we decide to drive to the Luray Caverns to go through the “Hedge Maze” which is a giant maze made of bushes that you walk through. We had ... read more

Only one more weekend before school starts. What a bummer. I can already feel the hot weather starting to ease up. There are lots of things I like about the fall, but summer is without a doubt my favorite time of the year. Oh well, there’s still time for one more giant fun-filled weekend! The destination is the Shenandoah River Outfitters Campground near Luray, VA. We had been there two years ago with Paul and Elaine and absolutely fell in love with the place. The campground sits about halfway down a 20 mile road that parallels a lazy section of the Shenandoah River and provides easy access to the water. It’s a river-rat’s dream. We only began planning this trip about two weeks ago; somewhat spur-of-the-moment for us. We’ve decided to take two days off and ... read more

On our way up through North Carolina and Virginia we stopped at the town of Mount Airy...which was Andy Griffith's home town. This is what he based his show on, and the town has embraced that image whole-heartedly. They've recreated the sets from the show in a small area of town and even offer sherrif car tours of the "famous sights". Paul got a kick out of it, whistling the theme song all day long. Danielle was thrilled by this, of course. :) Next on our agenda was the lovely little town of Charlottesville Virginia, and the home of Thomas Jefferson. It was named Monticello, and though not grand or incredibly beautiful, it was very interesting. Jefferson spent some time in France and brought back a lot of ideas with him of how a house ... read more

On my way out of the Shenandoah Valley, I stopped by the Luray Caverns. Billed as the largest caverns on the east coast, I decided to stop by and take a look. Found in 1878 in the area limestone. We were assigned to a tour guide and the tour takes about an hour or so. You end up walking just over a mile. It is a US Natural Landmark. Although the caverns are a constant mid 50 degrees, it can be a bit humid. Nature is still at work forming the caverns so water is ever present. The caverns are some 4,000,000 years in the making. Huge, tall cathedral like areas within the cavern. Just amazing. Formations of all kinds are there to see including those that look like anacondas, hanging fish, bacon, draperies and fried ... read more

This trip was to bring my in laws from Quebec Canada, to Florida, before winter. Many people do this trip in one long shot, (28-30 hours of drive....) or two. This is not my style. I planned the trip so that we could stop along the way at interesting places. First stop was Luray caverns in Virginia. IF you never visited a cavern before , then you miss on something!! It's like entering into a brand new and fascinating world!! Luray cavern are full of stalagmites, stalactites and other structures. Very important thing when you visit a cave and if you want to take good pictures, is a proper lighting. If light is not sufficient, you might need to bring your own, and even with this, cave must not be too big, or light won't be ... read more
