This is our initial blog post to introduce you to Marvin, Bonnie and Sadie. We love to travel and take pictures of beautiful things. During a recent trip to Moyock, NC to visit our daughter and grandkids Bonnie ran across this old barn and truck. She has a very discerning eye and does not miss much in our travels. I thought it would make a perfect first entry into our blog. We established this blog because we are starting an extensive trip to Alaska via RV and have had many of our friends ask us for pictures. We will use this tool as an efficient and effective way to communicate to those who wanted to join us in our travels. We hope you enjoy seeing the pictures as much as we enjoy capturing them. We have spent the last week in South and North Carolina waters, and I believe, these are some of the nicest waters for cruising. Not that the water is actually all that “nice”; it still carries an “ice tea” hue, and I am afraid if I jump in I will come out looking like a wet tea bag… But everything else about this area is, well, nice! The scenery, the ease of travel, the people, the towns, yup, you guessed it, all nice. After days of being on the boat, we came to the town of Southport, South Carolina. We had heard from some boater friends, that there was a restaurant there called The Provision Company that would allow you to dock for free overnight if you ate at their establishment. I called the day before, ... read more

Loading the rig for the first time while emptying a house we lived in for more than 25 years is quite a challenge. We ended up packing things we didn't need on the road and left or forgot things we would need. We have been trying to get the right balance of gear for months. This image is at the old house in Chesapeake, VA and is of our new home almost ready to depart for a life on the road.... read more

I was tired of working on the waterfront. I had spent 41 and 1/2 years working on the water and felt it was time for a change. Monica and I sold the house and got an RV. We found a great Winnebago Journey - 34 foot diesel pusher at Snyder RV and loaded up with Chop (the dog) and hit the road. It is a great Journey and I hope it never ends. I'll add photos as I figure out how to work this site.... read more

I finished my first session at MITAGS and now it's time to get my hands dirty. I am working for The Vane Brothers on the Chesapeake Bay pushing barges between Norfolk, Yorktown and Salisbury MD. I am working/living on the 100ft tug Roanoke and we are pushing a 250 ft. barge. I got onboard in mid November for a couple weeks, went home for a week and now I am back on for four weeks. I am learning the ropes of a deckhand, cleaning the head and tying up the barge. We had a small leak in the tug and had to get hauled out in Norfolk by the worlds largest travel lift. We got back in the water in less than 24 hours. It's been great learning all the aspects of working the deck. More ... read more

Day 1 When I woke up, it was 40 degrees, so to delay things a little Chris & I went to breakfast, hoping that it would be a little warmer afterwards. It was a little warmer, but still quite chilly. It was pretty much cold all day. To make matters worse, I caught a cold the night before. Definitely not ideal conditions for riding a motorcycle, but tolerable. I ran into a bit of traffic near the 295-76 merge, but after that traffic was pretty light for most of the day. I rode down rt 113 instead of rt 13 in Delaware because I thought it would be more scenic. I was wrong, Delaware is pretty bland regardless or of which route you take. As I rode into the Delmarva Peninsula it became quite windy, not ... read more

Tidying up below decks yesterday, I heard someone tapping or hammering persistently on the wooden dock at Great Bridge. Boaters usually investigate every odd sound that might mean trouble or an opportunity to chat. When I popped on deck, the only person to be seen was a well-dressed young woman on her hands and knees, working on some ropes going into the water. I decided that her very high heels must have caused the rapping sound as she arrived. “Are you a fisher person I asked?” “Well sort of,” she answered. “I’m just checking my crab pot, but I’m really mad because someone has stolen it. I thought this place had more class but I guess I was too optimistic. I just had the pot in my truck from moving and I thought I would give ... read more

We spent 2 full days and 3 nights at Manhatten Beach in the 'Sea View Inn at The Beach' hotel. This hotel, though basic, had everything we needed, including easy internet access, which came as a huge relief after such recent variable experiences. We were able to catch up with family on Skype and keep up to date with all the happenings via my Facebook page! The hotel had bikes available for guests, and as the Board walk was 2 minutes walk away, we took full advantage of them and used them constantly during our short stay. We decided not to do the tourist things in LA, so no 'Walk of Fame or Universal Studios' this time. Apparently getting around LA is not easy as the traffic is terrible and getting from A-B takes ages. Instead we ... read more

On Sunday, April 12th I'll be flying to Europe for a one month visit to the Balkans. I will have a 12 hour lay over in Frankfurt on Monday, April 13th before continuing to Belgrade! Hmmm.. How should I best utilize these precious 12 hours? Well, maybe the average person would just chill out at the airport, but then again, I'm not the average person. I'll figure it out and keep you guys posted! In the meantime, I have 4 full days until I head out. What does this all mean? Well, I have a lot of things to get done "last minute" style, as usual. Running around, taking care of errands, mapping my travel plans, looking at summer and fall options, etc, etc It ain't easy, but somebody's gotta do it! Stay tuned!... read more

The sky was clear and blue in the morning, so we took another walk on the beach before we had to leave. Daisy investigated a dead horseshoecrab. Jodie had told us that one of the local delights was Tastykakes so we tried some small cinnamon rolls for breakfast. They were tasty. Jodie had told us that they were THE treat in Pennsylvania, and Stephanie Plum from the Janet Evanovitch books loves them in New Jersey, so we had to try them in Maryland. A pony was walking up the bicycle trail as we left the park, so Nancy posed by it. It took almost no notice of us. On this gorgeous, warm, sunny day, we passed lots of long chicken barns, some maybe 300 feet long and three or four on one farm. Then we came ... read more
