Greetings, blog subscribers! Things are happening here in preparation for our move. Along with all the other changes going on, I have a new blog address and format. TravelBlog has served us well, but further updates can now be found at On The Road Again. Come on over and take a look, and if you need any help figuring out the best way to keep up with new posts when they appear, let me know. ... read more

Jaz leaves in ten days! Over the past few months, it has sometimes felt like the day of departure would never come, and now it's almost here. I knew that at some point my excitement (and envy) about Jaz's plans would be overshadowed by my own anxieties and awareness of how much I will miss her. Yikes! She's about to fly away to a third-world country on the other side of the world and her plane ticket is open-ended, so we don't know for sure when she'll be back home. Actually, I'm not any more worried about her safety than I would be if she were going off to college or headed to another "first world" country. I have great confidence that she will have a valuable and rewarding experience, and I also know she may ... read more

Well would ya look at that? My very own blog. My mom has been an avid blogger throughout the last couple of trips, and now I guess the reign is passed on to me. But not really, because she'll continue blogging her adventures, and probably much more avidly than me. I have mixed feelings about starting a travel blog... I probably wouldn't even be doing it if it weren't for my family getting on my case about it. But hey, I've started blogging before I've even left, so I must not be totally dreading it! I definitely enjoy writing; I just don't do it much because there's rarely any motivation. What I really fear is that people who read my mom's blogs will now be reading mine and the bar will be set excessively high and ... read more

I thought some of you might enjoy seeing this: Jaz on the PLF website Jaz has plans well underway to return to Cambodia in September with the intention of teaching English through the spring. We hadn't planned on having an empty nest so soon, but we'll manage - and we'll look forward to visiting while she's there! She's got a busy summer ahead with online CCV and UVM classes and (with any luck) a job. (She's filled out 18 applications and been to four interviews this week.) If anyone knows of interesting job opportunities for the summer (or a wealthy benefactor who would like to help support her work) please let her know. (Her online classes for the fall are Travel Writing and Digital Photography, so I'm hoping she'll take up blogging. I'd rather be there ... read more

(This post is all about pre-departure details, so if you’re looking for something exciting, please look elsewhere!) One week from now will be our last night at home. Steve will cook us something wonderful for dinner, and Jaz and I will finish last-minute packing and make sure we have adequate reading material and well-charged iPods at our fingertips. We will check the weather forecast for Burlington, Bangkok and Cambodia. I will be trying to wrap my head around the fact that no matter how cold it is here, I will still be wearing sandals (with socks) when I get on that JetBlue flight Monday morning, because if I wore real shoes, I would just have to drag them around Southeast Asia, never to be worn again until the flight home. My desk and my head and ... read more

OK. First, a confession: When I posted the first entry here and called it “56 days to go…” I was wrong. Apparently, in my excitement, I jumped the gun a little and miscounted. But this time, I’m sure of my dates, and now it is 7 days to go. Really. Preparations have continued! More reservations have been made, more email confirmations have been received, more credit card transactions have been processed, and a pile of items has begun to collect in my open suitcase. I had the great pleasure of giving my mom a tetanus/diphtheria booster, a polio vaccine, and a dose of Hepatitis A vaccine. (She also got her typhoid vaccine, but that’s an oral med.) I bought travel medical insurance for us. I’m so excited - I haven’t had health insurance in almost ten ... read more
