Start: Capitol Reef National Park Ziel: Escalante Tageskilometer: 122.7 Gesamtkilometer: 4'870.8. N... read more

What a difference a few miles make. From the rust-shaded bottom roads in Capitol Reef we climbed until we found ourselves cruising narrow ridges high above it all. At first we found ourselves high above the frost-line among pine and birch and Mule deer. This soon gave way to white sandstone. The remains of a Sahara-like desert that once existed in this place until it was compressed for eons under enormous weight, transformed into rock and born again when wind and rain exposed all. Everything here is so bright. The sun reflects off all surfaces giving the landscape a washed out, flat effect. Distances are hard to judge as boulders and buttes fade into the camouflage. The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, at 1.7 million acres, dominates southern Utah. It is unique in that it is the ... read more

Thursday, May 17, 2012 We made the short trip to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument this morning. We camped at Kodachrome Basin State Park. We had the best site in the park (number7) and was amazingly the same site that was vacated by a couple that we met at Brice yesterday. The site was backed by red cliffs and shaded by Utah Junipers We drove to Escalante and hiked the Escalante River Trail. The canyons were 200-300 ft high. The sandstone was mostly black and Grey and made many U shaped curves up the canyon. We started a 5 PM and did not finish until just about sunset (8:30). We ate a Barbeque restaurant in Escalante. It was a windy but a nice hike. Friday, May 18, 2012 This morning we hiked at Willis Creek. This tiny ... read more

All I did today was drive, which is not a bad thing at all since I love driving. When camping/road tripping in areas unfamiliar, I can only recommend visiting as many information centres or visitor centres as possible. You meet really nice people from the area who know more than any travel book could possibly tell you, and sometimes they even give you a hint on where to camp for free with the best view. I suppose my natural charm and accent is most intriguing. I must sound so weird by now, having picked up all sorts of dialects of the English language over the years, they cannot place me at all. Pretty cool, actually. Oh yeah, I almost forgot: I met the most friendly police officer yesterday whilst speeding about 10 miles over the speed ... read more

Nineteen of us left Salt Lake City early on March 31st for four days of backpacking in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. This is one of the most popular backpacking spots in southern Utah and the perfect place to take a large group as there was plenty of water. In fact, we hiked through water for most of the trip and if you think you can try avoiding the water, think again. Avoiding stepping into water is not an option on this hike. Make sure to wear a very sturdy pair of ventilating boots. I have a pair of Merrill Moab Ventilators that drain water very quickly and also dry very quickly. These boots, along with a pair of SmartWool socks are the perfect combination when walking through the ankle deep (and sometimes calf or ... read more

One of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monuments great features, beyond the low visitor numbers, is the wide variety of landscape within its borders. This monument holds a huge number of natural features, all different. I moved to the east side today, to explore the Escalante River. It’s the last major river system in the continental United States to be named and mapped. Highway 12 Highway 12 east of the town of Escalante first crosses a grassy plateau. Just outside town, it has a view of a red ridge to the north with an obvious gap in it. The gap is the start of Escalante Canyon, one of Utah’s most impressive multi-day backpack trips. The highway, by contrast, is downright dull. All at once, that changes. The roadway reaches the plateau edge and an overlook, Head Of ... read more

The Escalante Grand Staircase stretches from the Capital Reef National Park down to the Dixie National Forest. It is an incredible drive down HWY 12, known as once of the most scenic drives in the country. You are surrounded by Sandstone cliffs and Hoodoos. Once you leave the Grand Staircase, you head into Dixie National Forest. It has high heavily wooded mountains with lots of deer and cows. Although it is public lands, BLM will lease the land to ranchers to graze their cattle. The cows won't be there much longer, high altitude and it was getting very cold. It sure made for raw nerves, we had seen so much wildlife on the trip, but we were all very tired by this point. We traveled through several great small towns Kanab, Bryce and Mt. Carmel on ... read more

The Grand Circle Day Four - Route 12 Scenic Byway We were ahead of our schedule – not that it was much of a schedule, we just assumed we would spend two days per park and see how far we got round our route. However having spent a day in each of the first two parks, we decided each park was unique, but a second day would be more of the same, so we elected to take Route 12 as far as we could for the day’s drive, with plenty of stops along the way. The mileage involved wasn’t that great and we thought we would be in Torrey by lunchtime and in Capitol Reef National Park for the afternoon and the next day. How wrong we turned out to be. Our first stop was Kodachrome ... read more

What a beautiful morning here in Escalante, Utah - home of the Grand Staircase National Monument. We checked in early evening last night following our stay in Moab. Let me get you caught up... On Tuesday morning we started the morning off with breakfast, a seemingly innocent activity that I would pay for dearly. Not thinking that there would be anything further to think about after breakfast, I proceeded to get sick. Headache, queasy and generally not well - but that didn't stop us for heading out to newspaper rock and and the south entrance of Canyonlands National Park and the the Needles District. It was magnificent! Newspaper Rock always captures my imagination. The petroglyphs tell stories that no one has yet deciphered which is fine by me! I love to imagine what they all mean. ... read more
