Day 7 - Dinner at La Cocina last night, great Mexican restaurant, great decor, food was good but nothing to write home about (and as I type this I realise that's exactly what I'm doing!), chicken enchilada's & ground beef steak (read rissole) with all the trimmings, but when asked whether we wanted green or red chile, and the answer was none please, the look on our servers face was total shock - no chile - are you crazy? Anyway it was quite nice and another early morning start for a ride down the interstate to Las Cruces, only a few miles from the Mexican border. Fuel up and a drink then off to Alamogordo and up another brilliant mountain range to Cloudcroft for lunch at Dave's Cafe. Great service by a friendly server. Another tip ... read more

After a little bit more of a process than we planned for, we are now registered to vote in Texas. It was a little bit surprising, but quite satisfying when the lady at the driver’s license agency gave us our temporary licenses and said “Welcome to Texas.” And our voter registration cards arrived in our mail today. The process did require us to stay here in Livingston for a couple weeks longer than we planned, but we have had a very nice time here and learned a whole lot more of the Escapees club, which runs this RV park, than we would have learned in the week we had planned to be here. We’ve attended the afternoon services here on Sundays and the ice cream socials on Sunday evening, Natalie’s enjoyed some game nights and crafting ... read more

One of the most important things we need to do as we become full-time RVers is to establish a home address, which will be our “domicile” for the foreseeable future, and get registered to vote (in the apparently faint hope we’ll have an honest election someday soon). To get all that done, we needed to get to Livingston, Texas, and that’s where we are now. We’ve had our mailing address here for almost a year, and now have Texas plates on our Truck and RV. Next, we need to get our Texas driver licenses, but have to wait until our birth certificates and marriage certificates arrive. (I mistakenly assumed our Washington State enhanced licenses were sufficient to prove our ID, but was mistaken. Oh well.) They should arrive in time for us to get all the ... read more

During the initial march to Baghdad on March 23, 2003, a small unit at the end of a miles long convoy was separated from the other military vehicles. The news was somber, confusing, and disbelieving. At that time, that day and that very moment, I was in my heyday as a proud company commander of an Assault Float Bridge Engineer Company. I heard the news that a maintenance company, of regular Soldiers, had been ambushed in the small unknown town of An Nasiriyah. My swagger was frozen at that moment. The days following continued to unravel as truly tragic. Death and fear tore through the small unit as the unbelievable continued to unfold. Hostages, rumors, rescue missions and for many of us, the knowledge that our unit would be following in their footsteps. We need more ... read more

On this journey I am trying to immerse myself into the feeling of being part of the military family again. I want to hang out with my people, belong to the military village, and to reconnect with those feelings whether it’s the people, the sounds, the sights…..that safe feeling of a deployment, knowing it’s all one team…serving a bigger purpose… Joint Base San Antonio was my first real test of getting back into the swing of hanging around and experiencing the military. Of course, my excitement was short-lived as I pulled up to the main entrance. The security police saw my RV and quickly assessed that my vehicle height might be more than the building overhang (although I knew better), so frantic waving and quick thinking was conducted on their part. I changed lanes and goobered ... read more

Another 5 hours of driving today to get us to Houston. We took a quick jaunt to Uptown Houston to see a man-made waterfall. The next day we visited Johnson Space Center, the Training base and home for our nation’s astronauts and the site of Mission Control. At Space Center Houston, we walked around inside and saw exhibits on space suits, displays for Apollo, Mercury, Gemini and Artemis programs, the mission to Mars, and the International Space Station. Outside we took an open-air tram tour of the George W.S. Abbey Rocket Park which housed a Saturn V rocket, and then walked over to Independence plaza to explore a space shuttle and a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.... read more

It’s been more than a month since we’ve posted any information, and it’s time to catch up at least a little. We are now in Van Horn, Texas and will be leaving in the morning for Sonora, Texas and think we might get to San Antonio next week. We left Yuma the day after Easter. It was time to get moving again, before Yuma gets entirely too hot. We also have to get to Texas so we can get started establishing our domicile for the time we’ll be living full time in our RV. Who knows: we might even decide to settle there. There are many things about Texas to make that idea a good one. We’ll see. Our first stop after Yuma was Picacho, Arizona, which proved to be a delightful place. The park was ... read more

We spent a night in Stockton, TX on our way to San Antonio, TX. We glamped at Alsatian RV Resort in Castroville. We learned about a self-guided walking tour of the town from our RV neighbor. We ventured out one day and did the tour. The tour takes you past many historic Alsatian style homes and buildings. While in San Antonio we explored the Riverwalk, the Alamo, Market Square, San Jose Mission, Pearl district, Castroville, and Fiesta San Antonio. We loved all the history and culture that are part of the San Antonio area! We anticipate returning for another visit in the future, still so much to see and do!... read more

Ok here’s something I forgot about 3 days ago. When I was coming across one of those big mountains on my way to Carlsbad, I kept thinking something’s different. Then I realized that I wasn’t on a desert mountain like the others I had been across. This was a mountain with tall deep green pine trees marching up the slopes. And they were all pines, no spruce or deciduous and it was cool and refreshing like being in northern Ontario. It put me in mind of the Black Forest in Germany where all the evergreens are of such a dark green that they almost look black. I left KOA Carlsbad at 8 a.m. this morning driving past acres of pistachio orchards. Unfortunately it’s too early for them to be flowering because they are stunning pink in ... read more

After driving many many hours in a desolated area of Texas, we finally reached Big Bend National Park. Where large peaked mountains burst out of the low flat desert lands. We camped in Marathon, TX, so we could get an early start to the day at the park. Due to the late reservation, we were only able to obtain a campsite in the park for one night at the Cottonwood Campground. Fueled up, showered, and stocked up with food and water we took off bright and early with full mugs of instant coffee we made at camp. Because of my knee pain, we skipped the 10 mile hikes and kept with multiple short hikes instead. Our first and primary focus with the center of the park, Chisos Basin. We had a snack and enjoyed a short ... read more
