Part 2--Rayene, LA to High Island, TX Stopped at the Texas welcome center and loaded up on booklets and maps of the Galveston area. Found our way, now on Interstate 10, to a cut off south on highway 146 along the Gulf Coast and through several small Texas City and other resort towns to Galveston Island and Jamaica Beach and the RV Park where we knew there were full hook-ups and at a fairly reasonable rate. As we maneuvered into a spot in the RV park, we saw a flock of very different looking ducks in the next door field. After looking through our bird books, we ID’d them as black-bellied whistling ducks. We thought we had a find, only to learn that they have become the same sort of nuisances on the Island as the ... read more

We arrived in Galveston this afternoon. What a great place to visit. The town is full of people on July 4th weekend. I do not think I have seen that many people driving on Seawall Blvd before. It is so good to see people returning to Galveston after the awful Hurricane, Hurricane Ike. This evening we are going to Tortuga Mexican restaurant on Seawall Blvd. They have the best Mexican food I have ever had. For now, we are enjoying drinks on the balcony of my inlaws condo overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and watching the Seagulls flying in the gusty winds.... read more

If Walmart ever started a cruise line, one of it's ships would, no doubt, look like Carnival's Ecstasy which runs out of Galveston, Texas. It makes four and five day cruises and goes to Progreso and Cozumel, Mexico. During the five day cruise you have a full day at sea after leaving Galveston and another full day at sea after leaving Mexico on the way back. My wife and I recently took a cruise on the Ecstasy. While on the cruise, we learned that the ship is being transferred to New Orleans and another Carnival ship is replacing it in Galveston. While on the outside of the terminal, we watched people as they piled out of cars, vans, and pickups. To begin with, we travel a lot so we have learned to travel light. We had ... read more

Woke up to a leaky air conditioner AGAIN!!! Back to Camping World to get a refund. Turns out it was surprisingly easy...seems like they've been down that little road before...note to self: find a new service company!!! So off to Galveston!! Arrived about 1pm at the Jamaica Bay RV Park...nice!! Has mini golf, nice grassy areas by their paved lots and full hookups!! Headed for the beach just across the road!!! Had a nice walk...noticing that 2 years after Hurricane Ike, many of the homes have been repaired or rebuilt, but quite a few are still showing the vestiges of that rath!! Ike blew through on 9/12/08...anniversary weekend!! Lots of surf fishermen out on this fine Saturday!! Saw one guy catch what we think was a yellowfin tuna, and another lady caught a smaller fish that ... read more

July 16th 2010 I have not been to Galveston in about 10 years and decided to see what has changed since Hurricane Ike hit in Sept 2008. As I was driving down I-45 and passing through the town of New Waverly I thought I smelt something fishy. Since I was still 100 miles from the coast I thought it was a little bit too soon to be smelling fish. Then, I saw a billboard which read “Wake up and smell the savings”. It was an ad for a mattress company. There must have been something fishy about the deal !! LOL. Crossing the bridge onto Galveston Island, I noticed the top of the median wall on the bridge was in shape of waves and the light poles were in the shape of birds. It put you ... read more

October 25, 2009 “If the sea rolls, I puke”! This is the statement that Donna, the perfect lady that she is, made when Bill said we had to take the ferry in Galveston!!! But I’m getting ahead of myself…We left San Antonio this morning before 9am. We wanted to get to Galveston early enough to swim in the Gulf of Mexico and our hotel in Galveston was right on the ocean… ($46.00 a room, not bad!). We arrived about 1pm. Bill, Donna and I went for a ride to the beach…further down than our hotel where the beach was a steep slope. We got sandwiches and headed out to a spot where you can actually drive right on to the beach. It’s hard packed sand so there are no problems with the tires. The sea was ... read more

For the most part, things are pretty much back to “normal”, or as normal as it gets on ships. Our first cruise out of dry dock has come to an end. Today we’re in Galveston, our home port, disembarking and embarking guests. This morning we had our Coast Guard inspection, which can often be a very long and hot and frustrating drill. But it wasn’t too bad, we were done in half an hour. And then, I was able to get off the ship! I only had a couple hours, so not much time to do anything too huge. But I hadn’t spent any time in Galveston yet, so I was happy to just wander around. I don’t know a whole lot about Texas. Most of my images of Texas are based from the TV show ... read more

Already my week on the Conquest has come to an end. There was a second formal night, which meant another night out at the disco. Lots of crew were out that night. I spent the night chatting with friends and dancing. I stayed until the disco closed and security cleared everyone out - then I was at a friend’s cabin after. My second last day we were in Cozumel. I was meant to go on a tour with Lonnel, but then she was on port manning and couldn’t get off the ship. I didn’t manage to locate another group of friends who were headed to a beach, so I just spent the day on my own. Went downtown to No Name Bar (the bar by former crew members for crew members) for some time on the ... read more

Hey everybody! I'm Jeff and this is my first blog posting ever... thanks for stopping by! I've been going to the beach almost every weekend lately so I thought I'd kick it off with a few shots from the most recent trip. My buddy Ryan and I headed out to Surfside Beach on Saturday morning hoping to catch some rays before the storm hit. And of course a beach trip isn't complete without getting stuck at least a few times... this trip I didn't waste any time at all! We figured that spot was as good as any so we set up shop and fired up the grill. Here's Bubba. Ryan wanted to grill him up but I finally talked him out of it. img=http://i6.photobucket.c... read more
