(From Max My Money): Some experiences are so emotionally heavy that they’re best left in the past. One commenter advises against revisiting Auschwitz in Poland, despite it being an educational and historical experience. The toll it takes on a person’s emotions is not to be taken lightly, with the commenter describing the visit as haunting and something they never want to relive. I decided not to visit Auschwitz, Dachau or Birkenau. Why? I visited Dealy Plaza and the Texas Book Depository some years ago when I was in Dallas for the NCAA Final Four and a Springsteen concert. It was such an emotional visit, I decided these places should not be on my travel radar. I could not visit the death camps, nor could I visit the MLK Memorial at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. But ... read more

I got up early for some photography. I was hoping for a location where there is some water reflecting the skyline, however the river in question was almost non-existent. Apparently, there has not been a drop of rain here for months and they are on the verge of a severe drought. Strangely, the news this morning is continuing to report on horrific flooding in Kentucky, which is not that far (by US standards) from here. They also mentioned a huge amount of rain in Death Valley, which I imagine is very unusual. We had wondered why this hotel was quite expensive compared to the others we have stayed in and now we have found out. There is a three day conference taking place for independent beauty consultants, so it is extremely busy. We also heard on ... read more

Our hotel is really unusual and looks like it's a converted warehouse or factory of some sort. Our room has an extremely high ceiling and a huge support pillar in the middle. Character is what I would call it, although I'm not so sure about the concrete floor - I'm sure there's carpet that would have been in keeping with the character. We are planning to do the Dallas tourist circuit tomorrow, so I just went for a casual walk in the morning whilst my wife chilled by the pool. The Downtown area is actually quite compact, so it is reasonably easy to cover it all on foot. I walked along Main Street, which effectively runs west to east through the centre until I got to the West End Historic District. This is the location of ... read more

On the road again – wait a minute, we are rarely on the road because we fly. But this time we are doing a 21 day road trip to TX, then AZ, and back just in time for the next Lutheran Marriage Encounter April 22-24. On Friday we pulled out at 7 to sleet and some snow all the way south past Columbus. It was fascinating to see the leaves on the trees getting more and more prominent with each hour driving south. By Cincinnati we saw daffodils. By Louisville KY redbuds, and then forsythia. We discovered that KY is divided into two time zones! And that the National Corvette Museum AND the Fruit of the Loom headquarters are in Bowling Green. By Nashville we were also learning about the Nachez Trace, which is evidently a ... read more

April, 2019 -- In retrospect, it was a mistake not to devote an extra day to see Waco on this Texas trip. The day we spent exploring the ‘new face’ of Waco was pretty much a whirlwind tour – plenty to see and do to fill up a day, but one day is not enough time to get a real feel for this city. In fact, in hindsight, a lot more time was needed to see and get a feel for Texas as a whole. I would have liked to see New Braunfels and Grapevine; and, though it would have been way off our north-south-north course, I would have liked to have seen Odessa for personal reasons but it was too far west. So, the last full day in Texas began with a drive back to ... read more

I'm going to break with tradition during this football season and write about a place where I didn't attend a game. I’ve written about Art Deco in the past, but this blog is exclusively about that architectural style. On a recent episode of The Man in the High Castle, one of the characters states the following nugget: “Architecture isn’t just about buildings.” This is probably one of the most important things to understand about architecture. It makes statements. It inspires. Art Deco, short for the French phrase arts decoratifs, was a movement in art and architecture from the 1920s through the 1940s. It was meant to be a break from what had gone on before. It was about efficiency, but also grandeur. It was about domination, but simplicity. The artists of the 1920s wanted modernity, and ... read more

I did not get any sleep last night, none on the plane either. I was too excited about the trip to sleep last night at all. Saw a really beautiful sunrise from the plane. Landed in Dallas at about 7:45am central time zone. We have about a 2.5 hour layover, then it's on to L.A.... read more

After three extra nights in Jamaica due to Hurricane Harvey we were finally were able to find flights via Newark into Dallas a little closer to where we were trying to reach family in Houston. We waited in Dallas for two nights until our brother-in-law could get through the flood water that had devastated Houston, and pick us up. We were able to spend some lovely family time together before our homeward journey. ... read more

We have been a little too much walking around and in the car the last few days, so not much time to write any blog. You have I guess most of you follow the sad news in Texas about hurricane Harvey the last few days. Harvey has so far mainly hit the coast and the city of Houston, this could be as bad or even worst than Katrina in New Orleans year ago, only time will tell and we are sad for all those people who lost everything. We did not get any close to Houston. I have landed in the past there, but this time, we are driving from East to West. Our first day was the long drive from Albuquerque to Midland. Why Midland? Well, we needed to stop somewhere after more than 6 ... read more
