My last day in Texas. It started out in the Austin hostel, where I went to tour the State Capitol Building. The building is enormous. I think Texas is secretly trying to move the US government here. The building is a monster and looks similar to the US Capitol.
Later in the morning, I headed out through the “hill country” to Driftwood, about a half an hour away. What’s in Driftwood? Not much besides some tasty Texas BBQ.
When I arrived at The Salt Lick in the late morning, the unmistakable smell of fire smoke filled the air. Upon entering, I saw one of the few open pits remaining in Central Texas. And on it was a carnivore’s delight, some of the most succulent looking brisket, ribs and sausage I had ever seen.
For my lunch, I had to go with all three meats. They came with a sauce which had a blend of honey, vinegar and peppers (I do realize that Texans don’t generally use sauce but this was worth it, live a little). The sauce was to die for. I almost lifted the bowl above my head and tried to pour it in my mouth a
la George Costanza at the US Open. Almost. I had plenty of food to put it on so that didn’t become necessary.
For dessert, I had to go with a local favorite - pecan pie. I was already stuffed so I was hoping that the piece would be small. It came out looking like the size of two pieces, not one. My willpower gone I knew this wouldn’t be pretty. The pie was
insert superlative here. I enjoyed it immensely.
With a solid 3,000 calories in me, I was ready for my drive up to Dallas. Yesterday, Dallas had experienced some very severe flooding. Today - tornado watches. Excellent. It would have been pretty cool to see a tornado. From a distance. A long long distance.
Tonight I headed to Arlington to see the Rangers play the Blue Jays. The stadium is another nice one that was built in the last 10 years. It’s extremely family oriented.
I decided against spending much given the storm warnings so I asked the ticket guy which section was the one where people congregated as they drank. He referred me to the club seats and the club bar. Not my
style. I asked if there was a section where they sell beer and people shoot the breeze while they watch the game and drink. Crickets. Okay, I’ll take one in left field. I got row 2, right where home run balls should land. $25. Terrific.
The game was good but it was very low scoring. And no home runs. That was probably a good thing. It might have spilled my $9 beer (which was worth it - the beers were large and locally brewed).
The stadium is also located near the new Cowboys Stadium. That thing is going to be quite a place to see a football game. I hope they get slaughtered January 3.
After the game, I decided to cut into tomorrow’s travels a bit and stayed in Sulphur Springs, TX, about an hour outside of Dallas. Sulphur Springs seems like a boring town. Fortunately I am not staying.
Tomorrow I’m off to Nashville with a brief stop in Memphis along the way.
