I left Sulphur Springs this morning after a brief overnight stay. It served its purpose as I could spend some time in Memphis en route to Nashville.
When I got to Memphis around 3:00 pm, I went straight to Beale Street, Memphis’s Bourbon Street. At this time of day, things were just starting to see some action. Happy hours were just beginning, although for some places happy hour was “all day, every day”.
I ate lunch at a place called Superior, which had beer specials and some “kick-ass Memphis BBQ", according to its spokesman out front. Anything would have tasted good at this point.
I had hickory smoked pulled pork which was covered in a honey BBQ sauce. This was good stuff. Just as good were the baked beans. And the local brew.
After lunch, I went out to Graceland to pay my respects to
The King. I’m not a huge Elvis fan but I still thought it would be interesting to see his home. I was surprised it wasn’t larger. It was fairly large and grand, but it’s no Neverland Ranch (at least from pictures I’ve seen of that, I have no intention of stepping anywhere
Lunch
It's half eaten. I always forget to take a photo right away. No patience. near that creep’s place).
Seeing Graceland was interesting for a non-enthusiast but would be heaven for a fan. Several of the rooms and other buildings were converted from their original use to house awards and Elvis memorabilia.
As I was leaving, severe thunderstorms rolled in and brought with them some rain. Leaving the city was enjoyable, as I pondered whether these folks ever saw rain before. When it cleared around sunset, I was treated to a fantastic view in my rearview mirror. Orange, red, indigo and purple layers looked like they were gently placed above the hills I had passed through.
On my way, I listened to some country music. Coming into this trip, I hadn’t listened to much of it, except in college when I rolled around with Strohman in his pickup truck. I had started to culture myself when I got into the Carolinas. I’ve acquired a taste for it now and some of it is actually quite good. The lyrics are great (the songs I like are usually about beer, parties and/or women) and many of the songs are more like Southern rock than the my-dog-just-died-and-someone-stole-my-pickup songs of the past.
This will come
Graceland Mansion
This is the main section. It extends further left and right. in handy this weekend as Nashville is currently hosting the CMA festival, a four day affair where there are numerous country music shows and other fanfest type events going on. That should be interesting but hopefully it doesn’t make the town too packed.
I arrived late tonight (at least by my standards) in Nashville and am at a hostel near Vanderbilt. I have a lot I want to do here and not a lot of time to do it. And Lauren Sahd from Ship is here for the Country Music Festival. Should be fun.
